Teacher Candidate: MARSHUN REDMOND Date: 04/29/17

Grade and Topic: 2ND GRADE / SOLAR SYSETM Length of Lesson: 60 MINS

Mentor Teacher: ROBYN FORD School: FENTY ELEMENTARY

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

Being knowledgeable of the solar system requires the understanding of the planets from the sun, sequence, and
how they all variance in shape, and color, as described in the TN state science standard 4.0.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Demonstrate different ways of knowing the placement of the Solar System and its importance
Provide accurate information in regards to the different planets
Demonstrate an understanding of the Sun

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
State/District, Common Core Standards
TN Science: Describe how tools, technology, and inventions help to answer questions and solve
problems. Recognize that new tools, technology, and inventions are always being developed. Identify
appropriate materials, tools, and machines that can extend or enhance the ability to solve a specified
problem. Recognize the connection between scientific advances, new knowledge, and the availability of
new tools and technologies. Apply a creative design strategy to solve a particular problem generated by
societal needs and wants.

ISTE Standard
Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop and evaluate
authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize
content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes identified in the ISTE Standards.

a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote
student learning and creativity.
b. Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual
curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning
and assessing their own progress.
c. Customize and personalize learning activities to address students diverse learning styles, working
strategies and abilities using digital tools and resources.
d. Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content
and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

The key concepts are to be able to fully understand and comprehend the placement of the planets
The critical academic language would be technical, because students would need to follow the specific
directions
The lesson connects and builds with the previous lesson by further elaborating on objective
I expect to build on this lesson by, referring back to the thoughts of the topic in the future, and creating more
assignments geared toward
I will not need to plan different assignments.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: I will begin my lesson by drawing a huge yellow son on the board. I will ask students if they
know what this is, and ask for volunteers to come up and place or draw things around it, rather I be solar system
related or not so students feel comfortable.
Procedures: 10Min: Students will open their laptops and take a quick online quiz arranging the placement of
the planets made by Charity Kahns Quiz Creator, to get their brain juices flowing

5Min: Students will arrange into two groups

30min: Students will decide on 4 planets to research and discuss their specific importance
of their placement using a Microsoft PowerPoint document

15min: Students will choose one person from their group to discuss what they have
gathered to the entire class, students who will additional time can use this time to
complete their work
Closure: To close this activity student will complete the given handout, and write a brief reflection
below.

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:
Goal: Distinguish the placement of planets
Objective: Create a PowerPoint describing the placement of planets
Assessment: Graded up knowledge of placement, and comprehension

MODIFICATIONS:
I am aware that modification will be made of the group who did not fully complete their objective, and for those
whom did. Also additional time modifications will be allowed for students with learning disabilities, and/or
other difficulties, and shorten assignments. Preferential seating will also be utilized, and/or available upon
request. Although, modification are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
