Information Literacy Assignment 5: Source Mining

Instructions

Part 1:
Find and read one scholarly article relevant to your research project. Find a central claim or
piece of information in the article that uses a citation and is relevant to your research question.
Locate this source in the bibliography of the article, and using the library, find and read it.
Using your Everyday Writer, cite both the original source and the source you selected from the
original source in MLA 8. In 250 words or less, explain how these two articles are related.

Part 2:
Complete each category in the space provided for your original source only.
Authority: How does the author assure the reader that the information presented is accurate
and complete? Click through links, look up citations, or verify important facts in the article
through a web search. Are the links, citations, or facts presented accurate and relevant? Look
up other articles written by the same author or biographical information about the author. What
are their credentials?
Bias: Explain the commitments of the author. What do they stand to gain from writing this
article? Who is their audience, and how can you tell? What kinds of organizations, ideas, or
beliefs do they associate themselves with? How do you know? Are multiple viewpoints
presented and addressed, or only the viewpoints of the author?
Context: Examine the website, journal, or other context in which the article is written. Is this
context credible? How does this context assure the reader that the content it publishes is
accurate and well-researched? What sort of sources does this context generally use (i.e.,
scholarly journals, popular press, twitter, etc.)? How do these factors shape your view of this
context?
Date: What is the date in which your article was published, and how much does this matter for
your subject? Explain your reasoning.

Part 3:
Answer each reflection section in complete sentences in the space provided.

Citation & Summary

Original source citation:
Guerin, Bernard. "Combating Everyday Racial Discrimination without Assuming Racists or Racism: New
Intervention Ideas from a Contextual Analysis." Behavior & Social Issues, vol. 14, no. 1, 15 Apr.
2005, pp. 46-70. EBSCOhost, login.pallas2.tcl.sc.edu/login?
url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=ssf&AN=510492729&site=ehost-live.
Sources source citation:
Brzuzy, S. (1998). Public policy interventions to prejudice. In M. L. Hecht (Ed.), Communicating prejudice
(pp. 326-333). London: Sage.
Relationship between sources (250 words max.):
Guerin starts the article stating, Racism and racial discrimination plaque out world and bring unnecessary
hardship to those affected (Guerin, 46). This pretty much is his claim. His claim is that this world itself is
contaminated with the racism that we truly are acting fire to the fuel when talking about it. The conflict in
our world is that we dont raise awareness enough. That is his claim.
This is reacting to the second article because the second article, Brzuzy talks about how this world has had
many accounts of racism related to gender differences related to homophobia. She talks about how this
world should be set, policies should be set, in a way that everyone, women and men are treated equally no
matter race, sexual standing, and etc. She backs up Guerins claim on how we must stand up and bring global
awareness to every problem minute and large, rather than waiting till the minute escalates to the bigger
problem. This article helps bring light to the discrimination that happens no based on race anymore but
happens on other occasions that we dont realize, such as sexual orientation, women vs men, etc. There all
pertain to racism now and that is our generations racism.

Source Analysis (200 words max.)

Authority: The several citations written in the bibliography come from scholarly articles
themselves. Thus, making this article accurate in terms of the authors writing. The
sources used to write this article are relevant, as they all pertain to the topic of todays
racism and sociology. The author himself is a professor at the University of Southern
Australia, and has a PhD in psychology. This shows that he is well educated in his
profession and therefore well-educated to write about this topic.
Bias: The author talks much about the psychological reason of how racism is in this world is
not seen as racism as much now. He proceeds to show this in an figure in his article
where he shows the traditional views of racism jokes, media etc. Then he has the
same columns for interventions and conceptual. In the end this whole thing means that
racism is more common among everyone and is generalized that they do it without
thinking it is racism.
Content: This content is valid, it was found on google scholars and on a credible source
thereafter. His bibliography was filled with a lot of accredited scholarly sources itself
so I feel that his article is accredited and I do not feel as if Im being miseducated.
Date: This article was published in 2005, it matters to me due my research topic being does
everyone now perceive racism as something else to hide what racism is going on
currently. The time is 2005 so it is recent and doesnt misinform the reader of others
opinions.

Part 3: Research Reflection (300 words max.)

1 What steps did you go through to locate both articles? What kind of source is your original (i.e.,
more informative or argumentative)? What databases or search engines did you use? Explain.
Response:
I went on google scholars to find the original article and then also went on the school library website
where I used its database to double check if the source was scholarly. This article was more informative
rather than argumentative. This article was found on the EBSCOhost.
2 What knowledge have you gained from reading these sources? Has this knowledge affected
your beliefs? Explain.

Response:
I learned that gender roles now fall under the racism factor without use realizing it cause our definition
of racism was based solely on color, now racism has been more based on groupings, such as if you
belong to a certain group rather than a race.

3 How can you use either source in your project? Which parts of this source are most useful for
your project and why?

Response:
I could use this source to bring a Psychologists view on how racism is in present day and how the
standing on racism has changed. This would be helpful in defining what racism truly is in todays
society so the reader can get clarity on that.
