Observation 1
I. Observation 1:
Setting

II. Grade:
Kindergarten

III. Students:
3 girls, 4 boys

IV. Setting:
Kindercare
Multi-Age (3-4 years old) classroom, 7 students, 1 head teacher.

V. Pre Observation
I conducted this observation to analyze the setting in an early childhood education
classroom. I also planned to identify any improvements that could be made. I
selected a kindergarten class from the Kindercare learning center. I set aside a
two-hour block to use to observe and form a running record. To better prepare
myself for this observation, I conducted some research about developmentally
appropriate classroom settings.

VI. Data:
Observations were conducted on February 16, 2015.

VII. Analysis:
In this classroom, the setting is bright and colorful and contains many attributes of
a developmentally appropriate setting. There is artwork that covers the walls.
Everything is labeled in both English and in Spanish, which helps with both their
spelling and sounding out skills, and with their foreign language skills. They have
a carpet where they all gather for lessons, and tables to do work at. The cubbies
that line the outside of the carpet make it impossible for the children to run around
too much. The library is in the far corner which makes it perfect for quiet reading.

VIII. Recommendations:
Overall, there is not much that I would change. I would, however, eliminate the
office space which is rarely used except for storage purposes, and place the
bathrooms there instead. The bathrooms are in the way and very distracting to
children doing work where they are at now. However, if they are moved to the
corner, they will instead be near the learning centers/play area and therefore will
not be as distracting.
IX. Post Observation:
This observation went well. The setting of the classroom was already great, so I
had minimal recommendations to give.
