The BIG FIVE Webliography

Phonemic Awareness
PBSKids. Public Broadcasting Service, 1995-2017. Web. 20 Feb. 2017.
<www.pbskids.org>
PBSKids is a website that has interactive games to help students practice their
phonemic skills. It is a free website that allows teachers and parents to check the
students progress and identify the area where students are struggling or where more
intervention is needed. For example, the Play Island game allows students to create
their own island by playing learning games and add new rides to their carnival island.
Students even earn points to trade them for prizes within the same website. It even
provides teachers, parents and/or caregivers with some helpful lessons, articles and
curriculums to teach students a variety of literacy techniques. It helps them identify
phonemes, print and blend letters to make the sound of the word and improve their
reading and writing literacy skills until they can master their ability to create whole
sentences. This website has different TV programs that children are already familiarized
with, for instance, Super WHY and Sesame Street. Therefore, children use their current
knowledge by integrating new concepts and knowledge.
This website is completely useful since I could combine phonemic awareness lessons
and interactive games to help my students increase their phonemic awareness skills. I
would share this website with the parents to allow children practice at home during their
free time. This will allow them to develop their literacy skills and improve on the areas
they are having issues with. I would also use the website during school hours, for
example, I would allow the students to work on their lessons and assess their progress
as they complete modules. As this website uses a tracker, I would be able to identify the
areas I need to intervene and the areas they master quicker.
Phonemic Awareness
Reading Rockets. WETA Public Broadcasting, 2017. Web. 20 Feb. 2017.
<www.readingrockets.org>

This website gives various hints and tips to help teachers in a classroom during school
hours and parents at home to help children develop great reading skills by emphasizing
their phonemic awareness skills and practices. This website also provides ideas on how
to help readers when they struggle, what are good reading topics to help master the
students reading skill and provide different books that the student can read to develop
their literacy skills. This website is a very good aid since it provides teachers different
strategies with instructions, examples and even book recommendations to guide and
help the student achieve a well develop phonemic awareness. I also found that there
are other teachers comments who mention what are the best strategies they have used
or how such technique is successful.

I would use this website to assess my students in a fun and interactive way. I would
allow them to play games that will determine the level of their phonemic skills so that I
can implement the correct technique to help students reach their goals academically
and personally. For example, the website has blending and segmenting games,
onset/rime games, rhyming games, syllable games, concept of word games and
ELkoning games. I would apply games from this website, for example, if I am teaching
the skill of rhyming. I would give the students games to play online after the lesson has
been taught. All this game techniques advise the teacher when and how to use them so
the student practices, comprehends and masters literacy skills. I could use this website
to choose different books to read aloud when introducing a lesson. For example, if I
wanted to implement syllables lessons, according to this website, I could use the book
Dogku by Andrew Clements or Tap Dancing on the Roof: Sijo by Linda Sue Park. These
books can serve me as a guide or example of what kind of book is needed to reach the
best outcome of the lesson.
Phonics
Sadlier. William H. Sadlier, Inc. 2017. Web. 20 Feb. 2017.
<www.schoolstore.sadlier.com>
This website provides links to books or different books to purchase that can help a
teacher chose types of books that can be helpful to students. This website only provides
books from grades K- 3. It provides online samples, allow to purchase books or even
free samples that can be mailed to the educator. However, as I surfed on this website I
found sample books that are bilingual, where the left column side of every page is in
English and the right column in Spanish. It can be very interesting for educators that
have ELs and teaching bilingual classes. There are some books that the activities are
only in English and help every student practice the English phonics even when they are
ELs. The great advantage of finding books and activities is that they are segregated in
grade levels, this gives the educator to choose the right book for their grade level
students. For example, the educator can choose an online sample and click on the
grade level, therefore, it will allow the teacher to overview the content of the book. It can
also benefit the teacher if there is a strong intervention needed for particular students,
so that the grade level activity can be either downgraded or upgraded.
I would use this website when providing my students different activities to work either as
a group or individually. For example, I would use book activities where the student can
look at the picture and write underneath the name of the object. I could help them with
the first couple of pictures where I would ask them what is the name of the object and
then ask them to slowly identify the phonics of each letter sound of the object.

This website is about reviewing and taking assessment regarding the phonics of
different words given. It serves as an aid for students practice the sounds of each letter
so that student practices and he/she gains confidence and moves on to higher levels of
phonics. This website has alphabet videos so that the student can sing and say the
words and familiarize with the phonics of the alphabet. Although this is for ages 4-7 it
can also be integrated for younger children. The more practice and repetition children
has, the better they will master reading and writing literacy skills. For example, this
website start by introducing letter sounds, reviewing and then taking quizzes. Every time
a module is started, there are different steps to practice the phonics and prepare the
student to then take a quiz.
I would use this website as it is very supportive to teach phonics due to the practice
given on each module. For example, I would use the videos where it allows the student
to sound out each phonic either silently, slowly and quickly. I would use these videos to
play them to the entire class on the projector and will sound each phonic. Another way I
can use this website is to use silent flashcards and assess students individually. This
will provide me a faster way to determine if the student has practice and learned the
phonic skills taught.
Vocabulary
Busy Teacher. Elegant E-Learning, Inc., 2007-2017. Web. 20 Feb. 2017.
<www.busyteacher.org>
This website gives seven different games that an educator can implement during
classroom activities and for parents to enhance the childrens vocabulary learning. For
example, it provides Pictionary games, memory games. Some of those games the
children are very familiar with, which makes the rule explanation simpler and get to the
game process faster.
I would implement these activities when I want to cover more than two lessons in one.
For example, if I have been teaching phonemic awareness and introducing vocabulary
words, I would use the Pictionary game so that the student is able to practice both skills.
I would work this as a group activity and allow students to draw a picture and the
student will be asked to spell the word and sound it out. I would also play the fun game
charades and divide the class into two groups. I would ask one member of each team at
a time to draw a picture card, the member participating will act out without making
sounds and his/her team will guess the vocabulary word. Once the team has guess the
right word, the member who drew the picture will have to spell the word and sound out
the phonics.

This website informs about five ideas for instructing vocabulary such as semantic maps,
word wizard, word detective, word connect and concept cube. These strategies are
somewhat different from what students might be used to. For example, a good way to
implement vocabulary is the use of semantic maps. Some teacher may already use this
strategy to enhance the understanding of different concepts and to increase new
concepts into the students vocabulary.
I would be able to implement the semantic maps as a group activity. For example, I
would read a book and pick a new word that most students are not familiar with. I would
create a semantic map and write the word on the board. I would reread the paragraph
where the word was found and ask students to help me define the word into other words
and make a list. I would add any other words that relate to it. This is a good way to help
students relate the vocabulary word to the reading. Most of the time its meaning can just
be found or known by reading the text. Another strategy that I would use is to implement
the word wizard. I would ask students to read a story, book or article of their interest and
find at least two new unknown vocabulary words. Then, they are to find out their
meaning either by rereading the text or finding the meaning in the dictionary. At the end,
they would share the vocabulary words as a group and they would be added in the word
wall.
Fluency
MsJordanReads. (2011). Fluency Boot Camp. Retrieved from
https://msjordanreads.com/2012/02/26/fluency-boot-camp/
This website provides different clues and tips to help a struggling reader apply
appropriate fluency to their reading skills. Therefore, it provides step by step on how to
build up great fluency with major components. For example, it gives the teachers ideas
on how to implement pace, phrasing, expression, and punctuation components. This will
aid on how to improve fluency skills.
I would take advantage of this website by implementing a theater and poetry activities.
During these activities, the student has the ability to practice the punctuation, pauses,
expressions by using puppets or dressing out. These techniques of hiding under
puppets or dresses gives them the comfort of expressing themselves with the
appropriate fluency. I would create a puppet box stage so that they can participate in
groups of two and present a small clip by using the puppets. I can serve as a model and
present one play so that they can have an idea of the difference of a good fluency at
speaking and conversation versus a poor fluency skill.
Fluency
Scholastic. Scholastic, Inc. 2017. Web. 20 Feb. 2017. <www.scholastic.com>
This website provides five different strategies to achieve a great fluency for readers at
grade levels 1-5, except 4. Although read-aloud and choral reading are great strategies,
this website has included model fluent reading, do repeated reading in class, promote
RDG 516 Aide Rocha 02/20/2017

phrased reading in class, enlist tutors to help out and try a readers theater in class. This
website also includes great poetry books and phrased readings, for instance, The
Random House Book of Poetry for Children by Jack Prelutsky and books for readers
theater as Readers Theatre for Beginning Readers by Suzanne I. Barchers. It does
provide several resources to choose from that can definitely enhance the ability of a
better fluency.
I would use in my classroom the repeated reading strategy and read aloud. I would read
a book and ask them to read it together with me for at least two times. Then, I would
advise them to read and reread a book together with their elbow partner for three times.
Another strategy that I would use which is very common would be, modeling fluent
reading. The great advantage of this strategy is that different techniques can be used at
one. I would pick a book and read it aloud so that they can see the expressions and the
use of pauses and punctuations I make while reading the book. This will help them
notice the importance of a readers fluency. I can also show them the difference of
reading a book without enthusiasm and the different meaning and impact that the
message can be expressed.
Comprehension
Benchmark Education. Benchmark Education Company, 1997-2017. Web. 20 Feb.
2017. <www.benchmarkeducation.com>
This website is very supportive since it provides strategies to benefit the students on
construct meaning by comprehending what is being read. For example, think aloud
while reading or hearing someone reading a book. Another important strategy is making
connections from old experience to the new acquired knowledge. This website gives
ideas on how to convey the comprehension skill while reading.
I would use the techniques shown on this website and I would put in place new activities
in the classroom as a group and/or individual. For instance, I would read a passage of
the book and allow students to relate what it is being read to what they already know or
have experienced in the past. This will open to discussion in the classroom about the
real meaning and comprehension of reading. I would also read another passage and let
them summarize what is being said paragraph by paragraph on a written paper. This will
allow me to determine how much comprehension each student develops while reading
aloud.
Comprehension
Reading Resource. Reading Resource.net, LLC, 2009. Web. 20 Feb. 2017.
<www.readingresource.net>
This website provides not only good techniques like the textbook or other websites but
gives hints to readers ask themselves to set a goal before, during and after reading. For
example, this books provides facts of what does a good reader do. They can be given
or set in the classroom so that the readers can determine their goal before reading a
RDG 516 Aide Rocha 02/20/2017

book. Those facts will be good readers set goals for their reading, read words
accurately and quickly, are selective as they read, use their background knowledge, and
to monitor their comprehension as they read. These facts will guide a reader to focus
and differ from other readers.
I would, first of all, allow my students to choose a book of their interest so that they can
relate their metacognition to the book they will be reading. The more opportunities for
children to free them to choose a book they like, the more interest in reading they will
be. After all, we tend to read books of our interest and it will provide more knowledge
about different aspects of life. The most important strategy to focus on reading and
avoid distractions is to make connections, therefore, I would practice this strategy with
my students as to making connection to their personal experiences or current
knowledge. I would also ask them questions as we read a book together and they would
have to answer them individually on a paper. This will allow me to determine if this
strategy is indeed helping them to comprehend.
