FEAST OF THE DIVINE MERCY

The Church celebrates the Feast of the Divine Mercy, a Feast ins tuted by Saint John Paul II,on the Sunday a er Easter. The
Novena to the Divine Mercy appropriately begins on Good Friday and this Feast of the Divine Mercy completes the Paschal
Mystery commemorated right through Easter week.

Easter Empowerment

W
e are called this year, to celebrate the light of Christ's Resurrec on filled with the
hope of Easter empowerment and carry it into a world of darkness and uncertainty.
However, this invoca on of hope may seem premature and dangerously nave. The
ominous shadows cast by the massacres in the bomb blasts of Churches in Egypt, chemical
a acks in Syria, retaliatory missile strikes, tensions escala ng between nuclear powers, violence
and death by cow vigilantes and an - Romeo squads,hal ng of religious services and polarisa on
of poli cs seem to be working at cross-purposes with the Easter message.
More personally, the spirits of some may be dampened this Easter by illness, bereavement,
family breakdown, addic on, and unemployment. When life has let us down or when old
struggles are succeeded by new ones, we may find it challenging to trust in the victory of
God. When hope begins to slip away, fear takes its place and we are robbed of Easter Peace,
Joy and Love.
The message by the angels is clear, succinct and compelling: "Do not be afraid; I know that you
are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised." The angels
describe the key moments of tension and drama in the Easter story. Fear and joy, despair and
hope, doubt and faith. This message 'Do not be afraid'is in many ways the hallmark of good
news and heralds the restora ve and empowering word of courage that is the very essence of
the Resurrec on life.
There is a mountain of evidence in the life of the disciples and of the church that Jesus indeed
rose. We see the disciples changed, walking in newness of life as a new crea on, filled with the
Holy Spirit. The evidence that they were changed by the Risen Christ is huge and convincing.
The fear that casts its shadow over Easter is actually the doubt that you and I can really walk in
the newness of life, that we can become a new crea on that we can change and be filled with
the Holy Spirit.
Can the God of Genesis, Who separated the darkness from light, Who brought the en re
world into being from nothing, make a new crea on and give new life? Can the God of Exodus
Who delivered the Hebrew people from slavery bondage deliver me from the bondage of sin?
Because of the Resurrec on of Jesus, we can experience the power of the Genesis in our life.
We can experience an Exodus from the bondage of sin in our life. The stone in our life can be
rolled away.
For all of us standing at the empty tomb whatever the circumstances there is unfathomable
hope. There is hope for those on the peripheries of society; hope for governments and leaders;
hope for the Church in this me of purifica on and renewal, hope for you and for me striving
to lead a holy life.
Easter is meant to leave us with a very dierent sense of the present and the future. It oers a
reality that is full of joy. Easter proclaims that fear and terror and death are not the end of the
story. If we keep joyful faith in the memorial of the Lord's paschal solemnity and live it in this
way, listening to His word and celebra ng His mysteries, then we shall have the sure and real
hope of sharing His triumph over death and living with Him in God.
The Easter Alleluia proclaims the unending Love of God and empowers us with this
unquenchable fire of God's love, summoning us to entrust ourselves to Christ's care as we hope
in the divine power of Christ's Resurrec on. Anchoring ourselves in the sure promise that God
who has the last word, will ensure us the light and life and grace and mercy and Joy and Peace
of Easter.

'Allelluia' a Cry of Joy
The Easter exclamation 'Allelluia' is a basic reaction in joy to the Risen Lord.
A
lleluia! If there's one word
that characterises our
Easter celebra ons, it's
this. We've been holding
o from using it for the whole of
Lent, just so that we can apply it with
renewed intensity to our celebra on
of Christ's Resurrec on. It gets sung
back and forth three mes by the
priest and congrega on at the Easter
Vigil, as we take it up again, and it's
stuck on the end of various parts of
the Mass of the Day, from the Introit
on the way in, to the dismissal at the
end. This 'Alleluia' permeates the
whole of our Easter celebra on; it
gives it its character, its mood.
But just what does it mean -
this 'alleluia' that expresses our
celebra on of Jesus' resurrec on
from the dead? The word does have
a meaning it comes from a Hebrew
word that means 'praise the Lord'
but Chris an tradi on hasn't translated it, leaving instead
the sound that obviously lies behind the Hebrew word for
'praise': the sound of cheering, or, to use a technical term
which reproduces the same kind of noise, 'ulula on'. This
great cry of 'alleluia' is like the roar of a crowd at a football
match when a goal is scored; it says something more basic
and more immediate than the explana on of its significance
that comes in the post-match analysis which puts into words
what happened in the match. A supporter of Manchester
City can explain all the significance for Liverpool of this or
that goal, but only a Liverpool supporter could have cheered
when the goal was scored.
And today, when we celebrate the fact that Jesus, whose
death on the Cross we commemorated on Friday, has risen
again, we cry 'alleluia' because we are cheering the fact that
He's won. He has proved stronger than death, that final,
common enemy of the whole human race, and so, in Christ,
our "team" the whole human race has won. We can
spend the rest of the year thinking about all the implica ons
of that victory for us of how exactly we relate to Jesus and
His victory, of the love and power of God it reveals, of the life

with God it promises. Indeed, that
is what we do, for, as Chris ans, it
is our belief in the Resurrec on of
Jesus that lies at the founda on of
all that we believe. As St Paul tells
the Romans (10:9), 'If you confess
with your lips that Jesus is Lord
and believe in your heart that God
raised Him from the dead, you
will be saved.' And of course, the
deeper our understanding, the
more we will be able to appreciate
the significance of the victory
we celebrate. Today, though, we
don't get that far. In fact, in our
Gospel reading, we don't even get
as far as encountering the Risen
Jesus: the empty tomb and the
folded grave-clothes are enough to
prompt this outburst of joy.
Joy, though, is not the only
emo on the sight of the empty
tomb could prompt. For Mary
Magdalene, in today's Gospel, it was a source of distress.
What she saw was simply an absence: 'They have taken the
Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have
laid him.' The dierence in the case of the nameless 'other
disciple' whom we understand to be the evangelist John
himself is that he didn't just see the empty tomb, but 'he saw
and he believed.'
The joy which our Easter alleluias express is the joy of
believing, that joy in the Gospel of which Pope Francis has
wri en so powerfully in his recent Apostolic Exhorta on
Evangelii Gaudium. And in that text, the Pope has reminded
us that our joy in believing is a powerful force, impelling us
to want to go out and share the good news with others, and
also a way of a rac ng them to share in that belief and that
joy: to come back to the football match, the cheering of the
crowd is something it is enjoyable to join in with.
So as we celebrate Christ's Resurrec on, His victory on
behalf of all humanity over death itself, we renew that joy
which lies at the heart of the Chris an message with a cry
that sums up the whole of that message: Alleluia!

Cant Keep Jesus Down
J
esus was dead and buried, with
a big stone rolled against the
tomb, and the Pharisees came
to Pilate to ask for permission
to seal the stone and guard the tomb.
Pilate responded, "You have a guard of
soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you
can." (Mt 27:65) So they did. They gave
it their best shotin vain.
It was hopeless then, it is hopeless
today, and it will always be hopeless.
Try as they may, people can't keep
Jesus down. They can't keep Him
buried. They may use physical force
or academic scorn or media blackout
or poli cal harassment or religious
caricature. For a season, they will
think the tomb is finally sealed. But it
never works. He breaks out. It's not
hard to figure out: He can break out,
because He wasn't forced in. He lets
himself be libelled and harassed and
black-balled and scorned and shoved
around and killed. "I lay down my life

that I may take it up again. No one
takes it from me, but I lay it down of
my own accord. I have authority to lay
it down, and I have authority to take it
up again." (John 10:17-18). No one can
keep Him down because no one ever
knocked Him down. He lay down when
He was ready.
China may have been "closed" for
forty years to Western missionaries,
and it's not because Jesus slipped and
fell into the tomb. He stepped in. And
when it was sealed over, He saved
fi y million Chinese from inside
without Western missionaries. And
when it was me, He pushed the
stone away, so we could see what
He had done. When it looks like He
is buried for good, Jesus is doing
something awesome in the dark.
"The kingdom of God is as if a man
should sca er seed on the ground.
He sleeps and rises night and day,
and the seed sprouts and grows; he
knows not how." (Mark 4:26-27) The
world thinks Jesus is done for; out of
the way. They think His word is buried
for good in the dust of irrelevant
an quity. But Jesus is at work in the
dark places: "Unless a grain of wheat
falls into the earth and dies, it remains
alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit."
(John 12:24) He let himself be buried
"no one takes my life from me" and
He will come out in power when and
where He pleases "I have authority
to take it up again." And His hands will
be full of fruit made in the dark.
"God raised him up, loosing the
pangs of death, because "it was not
possible for him to be held by it." (Acts
2:24) Jesus has His priesthood today

"by the power of an indestruc ble life."
(Hebrews 7:16) For twenty centuries,
the world has given it their best shot
in vain. They can't bury Him. They can't
hold Him in. They can't silence Him or
limit Him. Jesus is alive and u erly free
to go and come wherever He pleases.
"All authority in heaven and on earth
has been given to me." (Mt 24:18) All
things were made through Him and
for Him, and He is absolutely supreme
over all other powers (Colossians 1:16-
17). So trust Him and go with Him.
No ma er what. You cannot lose in
the end.
These ten gi s we owe to the
resurrec on of Jesus: (1) A Saviour
who can never die again. We know
that Christ, being raised from the
dead, will never die again. (Romans
6:9) (2) Repentance. "The God of our
fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed
by hanging him on a tree. God exalted
him at his right hand as Leader and
Saviour, to give repentance to Israel
and forgiveness of sins." (Acts 5:30-
31). (3) New birth. According to His
great mercy, [God the Father] has
caused us to be born again to a living
hope through the resurrec on of Jesus
Christ from the dead. (1 Peter 1:3-4)
(4)Forgiveness of sin. If Christ has not
been raised, your faith is fu le and
you are s ll in your sins. (1 Corinthians
15:17) (5) The Holy Spirit: "This Jesus
God raised up, and of that we all are
witnesses. Being therefore exalted
at the right hand of God, and having
received from the Father the promise
of the Holy Spirit, He has poured out

Death! Where is your sting?
D
eath and destruc on seem to be part of the staple
diet of so many.
They leave behind a trail of brokenness,
hopelessness and devasta on so sha ering
that strangely, death itself seems to be the preferred op on
which many hope will put an end to their suering.
Death is o en our neighbour.
It is o en the choice of those
who have lost hope in themselves and in others.
It is the perceived certainty that the inevitable will occur
which triggers a death-wish response.
Lurking in the subconscious is a world which is threatened
with collapse,
a world that can no longer sustain itself.
There is nothing more to live for.
Death is seen as a relief from present suering.
It is perceived as an end to life as we know it.
From this perspec ve, it is not uncommon
that not only do we some mes see death
as a libera on and escape from suering,
but o en go a step further.
We wish the death of those who inflict suering on us,
as another alterna ve to ending our suering.
We wish and call for "divine retribu on"
so that a sense of jus ce and closure may be accomplished.
It is not long before the vic m in turn becomes
the persecutor.
As for those struggling with emo onal, psychological and
physical illness,
whose suering can at best be alleviated by medica on,
death seems the most humane response we could wish for
them.
We seem caught in a karmic cycle of death and destruc on
and a life devoid of meaning, even if it is only self-sa sfying.
The egg which harbours within itself life in its embryonic
form
is unable to bring it to frui on if it is broken from the outside.
But if it allows itself to be broken from within,
it brings forth new life.

A mother grieving beside the bruised and ba ered body
of her son as He hangs on the Cross in His dying moments
u ers not a word quite an unusual occurrence.
The Roman centurion, witnessing the cataclysmic events
as Jesus breathes His last, recognises Him as the Son of God,
remembering the power of His Word to heal.
He makes a profession of faith, even as He proclaims
His death.
Mary's profound silence, on the other hand, knows
that even as she has treasured that same Word made flesh in
her womb
and now sees it taken away from her,
she is entering the "cloud of unknowing"
as she s ll treasures Him in her heart.
The celebra on of Easter brings us face to face
with the ul mate ques on we must ask ourselves:
Are we unable to resist being broken from without
by our programmed responses to adversity, suering
and death?
Or are we willing to allow ourselves
to be broken from within,
and thus step outside what seems a vicious circle of life?
The Risen Lord invites us to change our perspec ve.
We are being asked to profess our faith in LIFE
even as we encounter death in its varied forms.
Faced with our own brokenness, hopelessness and inner
devasta on,
we are not to seek physical death as a preferred op on that
will end it,
but rather embrace the death of the self that will
transform it.
We are not even to contemplate the death of the oppressor
as the means to ending our suering.
We are being asked to forgive, rather than call for divine
retribu on.
Jus ce and closure is achieved by our not falling into the trap
of those who were persecuted, now becoming persecutors in
their turn.
We are being asked to believe that even if the "inevitable"
occurs,
the result will surely be dierent from what we expected.
This last response is typical of Mary, Mother of the Lord,
who in the "silence of unknowing", knew that it was not
the end.

Christ Jesus is the one who died more than that, who
was raised who is at the right hand of God, who indeed
is interceding for us. ( Romans 8:34) (7) The Lord's personal
fellowship and protec on: "Behold, I am with you always,
to the end of the age." (Mt 28:20) (8) Proof of coming
judgment: "[God] has fixed a day on which He will judge the
world in righteousness by a man whom He has appointed;
and of this, He has given assurance to all by raising Him
from the dead." (Acts 17:31) (9) Salva on from the future
wrath of God: [We] wait for His Son from heaven, whom He
raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath
to come. (1 Thessalonians 1:10; Romans 5:10) (10) Our own
resurrec on from the dead: [We know] that He who raised
the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and bring us with
you into His presence. (2 Corinthians 4:14; Romans 6:4, 8:11;
1 Cor 6:4,15:20) The Lord is risen indeed!
But what now of His passion? What of His excrucia ng
agony at Golgotha? Yes, as C.S. Lewis says, the dawning
of this resurrec on age "will turn even that agony into a
glory." Now Joy has triumphed over Sorrow. Day finally
has dominion over Night. Light has thrashed against the
darkness. Christ, through death, has destroyed the one who
had the power of death (Hebrews 2:14). Death is swallowed
up in victory (1 Corinthians 15:54). Easter now has become
our annual dress rehearsal for that great coming Day, when
our perishable bodies will put on the imperishable. When
the mortal finally puts on immortality. When we join in the
triumph song with the prophets and the apostles, "O death,
where is your victory? O death, where is your s ng?" (Hosea
13:14; 1 Corinthians 15:55)
Just as rehearsing the details of Jesus' final days leading up
to the Cross prepares us for the fiery trial coming on us, so
also Easter readies us for the triumph that will follow. Easter
is our foretaste of glory divine. Christ has been raised. Day
And as for sharing others' grief and sorrow,
as they experience death in its various forms,
we will best do this by our silent presence,
comfor ng them with the consola on
we ourselves have received from God.
Just as the suering and death of Christ overflow to us,
so too the never failing comfort we receive
in experiencing His rising to life within us
will overflow to others. (2 Cor 1:3-5)
Strangely, the response of the centurion and Mary
as they stand at the foot of the cross
are possible only because of the Resurrec on event
that has yet to take place in me.
Truly beyond me and history,
Jesus IS the Risen Lord.
no longer is fading to black, but night is awakening to the
brightness. Darkness is not suoca ng the sun, but light is
chasing away the shadows. Sin is not winning, but death is
swallowed up in victory.
Indeed, even agony will turn to glory, but Easter doesn't
suppress our pain. It doesn't minimise our loss. It bids
our burdens stand as they are, in all their weight, with all
their threats. And this risen Christ, with the brilliance of
indestruc ble life in His eyes, says: "These too I will claim in
the victory. These too will serve your joy. These too, even
these, I can make an occasion for rejoicing. I have overcome,
and you will more than conquer."
Easter is not an occasion to repress whatever ails you
and put on a happy face. Rather, the joy of Easter speaks
tenderly to the pains that plague you. Whatever loss you
lament, whatever burden weighs you down, Easter says: "It
will not always be this way for you. The new age has begun.
The soul would have no rainbow if the eyes had no tears.
Jesus has risen, and the kingdom of the Messiah is here. He
has conquered death and sin and hell. He is alive and on
His throne. And He is pu ng our enemies, all our enemies,
under His feet. Not only will He remedy what's wrong in
our life and bring glorious order to the mess and vanquish
our foe, but He will make our pain, our grief, our loss, our
burden, through the deep magic of Resurrec on, to be a real
ingredient in our everlas ng joy. You will not only conquer
this one day soon, but you will be more than a conqueror.
(Romans 8:37) When He wipes away every tear, our faces
glisten more brilliantly than if we never would have cried.
Such power is too great to simply return us to the Garden.
He ushers us into a garden-city, the New Jerusalem. Easter
announces, in the voice of the risen Christ, "Your sorrow will
turn into joy" (John 16:20) and "no one will take your joy
from you." (John 16:22) Easter says that the one who has
conquered death has now made it the servant of our joy!

hy did Mary Magdalene
visit the tomb of Christ?
Was it simply an act of
sight-seeing? St John
doesn't tell us, and St Ma hew does
tell us that 'Mary Magdalene and the
other Mary went to see the tomb',
but the other two Gospels add the
detail that the women went to anoint
the body of Jesus, taking the first
opportunity to do so once the Sabbath
was ended.
So of course, this was no act of mere
curiosity, but an act of love. Mary's love
for Jesus did not die when He died on
the Cross, and like all true love, Mary's
love drives her to serve the one she
loves in the only way she now can, by
an act of tender reverence towards the
body of Jesus.
This is the same ins nct that impels
us Chris ans not only to pray for those
we have loved who have died, but also
to give them a respec ul funeral, to
tend their graves, and to long for the
day when we shall be re-united with
them, and hold them once again in our
arms. We do not pretend that death is
nothing at allit is a profound tragedy,
It is not that Jesuss body no longer matters. On the
contrary, it matters all the more, for now it is not only
a living but a life-giving body, a glorified body that
must be served in new ways.
but our love is stronger and deeper.
Mary comes, then, to perform that
act of love for one who is dead. But she
discovers the strange, hard to grasp
truth that stands at the centre of our
faithHe is not here, He has risen. The
tomb is empty. This empty tomb that
once held the corpse of our Saviour
and our God is the place that roots
our religion in the world of history,
the created world that God so loved.
Jesus was buried there, the slaughtered
vic m of all the world's hatred and fear.
But He is not there now. The Lamb once
slain now lives for ever.
As yet, Mary does not understand
what the empty tomb means. How
could she? Her conclusion that His body

Living the Longest Way of
the Cross
This article is based on the experiences of North Korean
refugees.

irst of all in the
hospitals: the

I was able to visit some
schools. They illustrate
the chronic malnutri on

apparatchiks of the regime,
of course! One needs to
know that a North Korean
child, aged seven, measures
on average eight inches less
and weighs 22 pounds less
than a child in South Korea.
Refugees (whom I have
met in South Korea) were
unanimous in telling me that
in North Korea, "you have to
bribe some member of the
party or of the army in order
to obtain basic necessi es."
Hence corrup on is the
order of the day.
I was surprised not to see
any handicapped people.
The truth is that the North

veritable concentra on
campsanywhere between
1 lakh to 2 lakh individuals.
The brutality of the camp
guards is the daily bread
of these prisoners, who
work 16 hours a day, suer
atrocious torture, to say
nothing of the public
execu ons of those deemed
to have been recalcitrant.
Among these "poli cal
prisoners", those who suer
the worst treatment are
the Chris ans, since they
are regarded as spies, as
"an -revolu onaries of
the first class." According
to the regime, there are
around 13,000 of them, but
according to humanitarian
organisa ons, there are
20,000 to 40,000. They are
singled out for the cruellest
treatments of allthey
are crucified, hanged from
bridges or trees, drowned or

My Easter Story
I
t all began with the death of my father in 1978. For the
first me, I witnessed the death of someone who was so
close to me. It was strange how it aected me. It is not
that I had not witnessed many deaths before that. But for
the first me, its finality hit me.
Without knowing it, it was my early prepara on for the
final moment of death. No, I did not think about it all the
while. I only felt that it
had introduced me to a
dimension of living that
was beyond me. And what
now, I thought. Will life go
on as usual? Will there be a
dierence in the way I live?
Without knowing it, I had
unconsciously accepted my
mortality. It was no longer
a distant reality. It was
for real.
The intervening years
were years of struggle,
pain, silent acceptance and
renewed commitment to
values I had been brought
up with since my birth in a
Chris an family. I became
a more responsible person,
more empathe c and more compassionate.
My quick to react nature began to mature into serenity
and calm. I was no longer the first to retort. I became more
deliberate and conscious of the consequences of what I said
and did.
Years slipped away, and they seemed uneven ul. I
mastered many dierent types of jobs, and entered into
many rela onships - both ocial and personal. I learned to
socialise, but also to remain in the background. I no longer
had the compulsive need to prove myself. I had worked
and endured. I had sweated it out and had remained. I had
moved from casualness to seriousness and commitment.
Then I encountered the second death of someone closest
to me; it was my mother this me. She went so peacefully
with that not to be forgo en last smile she gave me, when
I told her she had been a beau ful mother. That was like a
second wake-up call to me. And now what was I going to do

with my life to make it really worthy?
That is how my Easter story unfolded itself. I became more
op mis c, more posi ve, and more open to change. I grew
into a really caring person, feeling others' travails were also
my own. I lived among and interacted closely with all kinds
of peoplenovices, orphans, the disabled, the lonely, the
underprivileged, and my life became mul -dimensional.
Did I have the same experience of Jesus rising from the
dead as His disciples? I did not, but I began to seek Him in
the lives of those around me. I could now see Him in the
smiles of a wrinkled face, in the warmth and aec on of
rela ves and friends.
My life now had a quiet undertone to it. I felt like a flowing
river - with grace flowing through me, and in me. This li ed
my sadness away. Circumstances may not have been there
for the choosing, but I s ll experienced the quiet acceptance
of reality which is Easter.
To move from the Cross to the Resurrec on in our own
lives is what makes us an Easter people. For some, the
solemn moment arrives unheralded, as it did in my case.
For some, it comes in a drama c way and brings a drama c
change in their lives.
When I see the white lilies in bloom already in the garden
of the Home I live in, I am reminded of the enduring quali es
of Easterpeace and quiet joy. I had so dwelt on the mystery
of the Cross that I did not o en see its comple on in the
Easter experience.
Crosses come and go, but Easter remains. That is the final
reality of our own lives. So now, I live each moment as if it
is pregnant with hope. O en, we cannot see beyond the
horizon of our limited vision, but one day, we will. When our
earthly sojourn is over, we will experience the reality of our
lives fully. To live in eternal hope - that is the joy of Easter.
My Easter story began with, and will end with, death. Till
then, we live with the promise of the ages - a reality to come,
when all tears will be wiped away, and when we will fully
experience the glory of God.

over the world.
The focus this year is on
'Depression', which as
the WHO statement says,
"aects people of all ages,
from all walks of life, in all
countries. It causes mental
anguish and impacts on
people's ability to carry out
even the simplest everyday
tasks, with some mes
devasta ng consequences
for rela onships with family
and friends and the ability to
earn a living."
Depression is the leading
cause of ill health and
disability worldwide.
According to the latest
es mates from WHO, more
than 300 million people are
now living with depression,
an increase of more than
18 per cent between 2005
and 2015. Lack of support
for people with mental
disorders, coupled with
a fear of s gma, prevent
many from accessing the
treatment they need to
live healthy, produc ve
lives. "Let's Talk" is the
response part of the theme;
emphasising the fact that
those who suer from
depression must seek help,
must talk about it; but the
real challenge today is are
there people who have me
"to listen"?
Today, many of us live in
great stress. Compe on
and consumerism, power
and possessions tend to
rule our lives and our world.
What ma ers most is being
"up there." Several parents
today goad and prod their
children in an obsession to

The workplace, more o en

of tension. Family life is
marred, because everyone
is so 'busy', that quality me

rarity. Con nuous conflicts
and wars certainly add to
the depressive state of
aairs everywhere!
A few years ago, 'our
doctor' was our family
physician. We went to the
doctor for minor and major
ailments. We were listened
to and given some good
counsel. Our family doctor
was privy to husband-wife
problems; the concerns
parents had with their
children and vice versa; and
of course, those with the 'in-
laws'. Some hard to swallow
powders and bi er medicine
were given. One o en felt
be er, not depressed, a er
visi ng one's doctor. Most
o en, we were cured before
the medicine dosage was
completely finished. The
doctor found me to visit us
in our homes, when we were

too ill
to go to
the clinic.
Of course,
there were
always the
big hospitals
for major
illnesses,
surgeries etc.
Times
have
changed!
The
'family doctor' in
most places has
become as
prehistoric
as a dinosaur. Every
illness necessitates that a
'specialist' and a 'super-
specialist' see us. Then there
are the innumerable tests
to be done, and reports to
be got. At the end, there is
a huge bill to pay. Several of
the 'posh' hospitals generate
astronomical billings no
pa ent, and not even a
corpse can be taken out of
that hospital, un l every
rupee has been se led.
However, these expensive
medical services in the
country cater to a par cular
clientele who can aord
it; for the teeming millions
in India, it is just beyond
their means.
Healthcare, which is
accessible and aordable,
equitable and qualita ve,

is the right of every single
ci zen. The Universal
Declara on of Human
Rights in Ar cle 25 states,
"Everyone has the right to a
standard of living adequate
for the health and well-being
of himself and of his family,
including food, clothing,
housing and medical
care and necessary social
services." The Universal
Declara on makes addi onal
accommoda ons for
security in case of physical
debilita on or disability, and
makes special men on
of care given to those
in motherhood or
childhood.
All this
seems
good
on
paper. The reality is
tragically dierent for
millions of Indians,
especially for the poor
and marginalised sec ons
of society. In September
2016, the first global
analysis that assesses
countries on sustainable
development goal (SDG) -
health performance - was
launched at a special event
at the UN General Assembly.
This new index developed
to assess each country's
achievement on a range of
health indicators ranked
India a pi able 143 out of
188 countries, six places
ahead of Pakistan and way
behind countries like Sri
Lanka (79), China (92), even
war-torn Syria (117) and
Iraq (128). Dr Vikram Patel,
Professor of Interna onal
Mental Health at the Centre
for Global Mental Health,
London School of Hygiene
and Tropical Medicine,
and co-author of the study
says, "The reason why India
con nues to be one of the

 worst-performing countries
in health is because its
poli cal and medical
classes have persistently
ignored public health
principles which ul mately
improve a na on's health,
such as addressing social
determinants of disease
and ensuring high-quality,
accountable, universal
healthcare for people."
Dr Patel hits the nail on
the head. The Government
shows no poli cal will to
ensure the much-needed
healthcare for the poor and
the marginalised. In the last
Union Budget presented at
the end of January 2017,
the alloca on for the health
sector as a share of GDP has
seen a marginal increase
from 0.26 per cent in 2016-
17 to 0.30 per cent in 2017-
18. This falls abysmally short
of mee ng the long-standing
demand (ar culated in the
Dra Na onal Health Policy,
2015) of increasing the total
alloca on for health sector
to at least 2.5 per cent of
the GDP. On the other hand,
the Defence alloca on was
hiked by a further 10 per
cent, making it scandalously
to about 12.78 per cent
of the total Government
expenditure.
The fact that health has
not reached millions of
the men and women of
our country is certainly
depressing news.
'Depression' must be
addressed; but a primary
ques on that we need to ask
ourselves is "Can we really
celebrate 'our health'"?

The rulers of North Korea
have banished all forms of
religion, because, according
to Marxism, religion is the
"opium of the people."
North Koreans do not
know what a Bible is, nor
consequently who God is.
A few years ago, with great
fanfare and propaganda,
the government opened a
Catholic church, a Protestant
temple and an Orthodox
church in the capital
but of course, they are
mere showpieces!
Yet, despite all this, there
is an underground Church in
North Korea, which is subject
to con nued persecu on.
North Korean refugees
confirm that they have
seen neighbours arrested
for praying, at home or
in a secret place. Some
informa on does manage to
filter through; for example,
two years ago, a pregnant
woman (aged 33) was
arrested for the possession
of 20 Bibles. She was beaten
severely, then hung by her
feet in public. In May 2010,
some 20 Chris ans were
arrested; they were part of
a clandes ne church. Three
of them were immediately
put to death, and the rest
were deported.
It is thought that since
1995, at least 5,000
Chris ans have been
executed, solely because
they were praying secretly
or distribu ng Bibles.
Many North Koreans have
become Chris ans, thanks
to the presence of foreign
missionaries on the border.
It is also known that some
American and Canadian
pastors of Korean origin are
currently imprisoned in the
poli cal prisoners' camps for
having helped the refugees.
Refugees, when
caught, risk being forcibly
repatriatedwhich means
prison, torture, the camps
and death. If they are not
repatriated, they risk falling
into the hands of criminal
organisa ons which trac
in human organs. Women
and young girls risk being
kidnapped by gangs and sold
to peasants, or s ll worse,
to brothel owners. A young
Korean girl can be sold for
$800-$1200.
And so, as a missionary
and as a Catholic priest, I
am speaking here on behalf
of all those Koreans who
for more than 60 years
have been living the longest
Way of the Cross in human
history. I speak on behalf of
those who have had an eye
torn out, or another organ
without anesthe csso that
they can be transplanted
into rich Chinese, Japanese
or others! I am speaking on
behalf of all those North
Koreans who are vic ms of
the slave traders!
In conclusion, calcula ng
things on a strictly
geopoli cal basis
considering the rela ve
inac on of China and the
Western powersthe 21
million North Koreans risk
having to wait a long me
before seeing any radical
improvement in their lot.
Barring an interven on of
God, that issomething we
pray for ardently every day
for this crucified people.

Christians innovate new
fasts, sacrifices for Lent
UCAN
Catholics, along with some Orthodox and Protestant
Christians, in Kerala are adding "carbon" and "cyber fasts"
to traditional privations during Lent.
Logging off social media, leaving cars at home and using
less electricity and plastic are all new types of fasting
encouraged by Christians for the annual period of prayer
and abstention in preparation for Easter.
Traditionally, Eastern rite Christians in the state, who
trace their faith back to St Thomas the Apostle (who is
believed to have visited India and founded their Church)
practise Lent for 50 days, following a strict vegetarian diet,
avoiding even milk and eggs.
The Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church, one of the
seven branches of the St Thomas Christians, were the first
to use Lent as a tool to protect the environment. Its leaders
began urging their one million-strong congregation since
2009 to observe a "carbon fast" during Lent, by switching
off air-conditioners, avoiding the use of plastic bags and
leaving cars at home.
More Christians followed suit. The latest to emulate the
example is the Church of South India, a union of Anglican,
Methodist, Congregational, Presbyterian and Reformed
churches. Some 405 churches in its Kerala Diocese have
also introduced a carbon fast this year.
Sabu K. Cherian, treasurer of the diocese, said that the
appeal made by Bishop Thomas K. Ommen of Madhya
Kerala Diocese inspired Christians all over the state.
"The members reduced their use of electricity and
motor vehicles. Pastors have been constantly reminding
them about the carbon fast during Lent, and telling them
that it is the poor who suffer the degraded environment
the most," Sabu said.
The Malankara Orthodox Church, the second-largest
faction of the St Thomas Christians, called for a vehicle
fast this year.
"We have sought to create an awareness of global
warming by appealing to the faithful to avoid vehicles
on March 26. Members in all 1,600 churches in Kerala
and outside have been asked to come to Sunday service
on foot or by bicycle," said P. C. Alias, spokesperson of
the Church.
The 30 dioceses of the Church have also been trying to
create awareness around the misuse of social media with

a "cyber fast." This year, the Church has urged its members
not to use cellphones, internet or television on Good Friday.
"Though cyber tools ensure effective communication,
excessive and uncontrolled use of them have broken down
communication between family members; mouths are
shut when the devices are on. Our effort is to discourage
the faithful from becoming addicted to these new tools,''
Alias said.
"We normally observe Lent by avoiding non-vegetarian
food and fasting during Good Friday. This is not enough
when technological advancements are posing grave
threats to the family and faith. We have called for the
cyber fast to make our faithful aware of the threat,"
Alias said.
Eastern Catholic churches are also aware of the damage
done by social media addiction, but they have not given
any official directives to the faithful, said Fr Paul Thelekat
of the Syro-Malabar Church.
He said that many young people in his own church have
spontaneously abstained from social media as part of
Lent. "We encourage such voluntary actions," he said.
Cardinal George Alencherry, major archbishop of the
Syro-Malabar Church, said that it would be a mistake to
conclude that these new fasts are pushing aside more
traditional observations.
"We have a very strong tradition. We know that many
young people are following Lent strictly," he said.

This is the seventh day of Holy Week, the day Jesus rested
in the tomb. In the first three Gospel accounts, this was the
Jewish Sabbath, which provided appropriate symbolism
of the seventh day rest. While some Church tradi ons
con nue daily services on Saturday, there is no communion
served on this day.
It is tradi onally a day of quiet medita on, as Chris ans
contemplate the darkness of a world without a future and
without hope, apart from God and His grace.
It is also a time to remember family and the faithful who
have died as we await the Resurrection, or to honour the

the world. While Good Friday is a traditional day of fasting,
some also fast on Saturday as the climax of the season of
Lent. An ancient tradition dating to the first centuries of
the Church calls for no food of any kind to be eaten on
Holy Saturday, or for 40 hours before sunrise on Sunday.
However it is observed, Holy Saturday has traditionally
been a time of reflection and waiting, the time of weeping
that lasts for the night while awaiting the joy that comes

Pope Francis said that when it comes to solving the
immigra on crisis, the media needs to stop perpetua ng
nega ve stereotypes and start explaining the big picture,
shedding light on the causes behind migra on.
"The mass media should be driven by the need to explain
the dierent aspects of migra on, also making the public
aware of the causes of this phenomenon," he said in an
interview published April 7.
"The viola on of human rights, the violent conflict in the
social unrest, lack of basic necessi es, natural disasters and
those caused by man: all this must be told clearly to allow
the right knowledge of the migra on phenomenon, and
therefore, the right approach."
In an interview with an interna onal Italian magazine,
Libert Civili, Francis slammed those in media who perpetuate
nega ve stereotypes about migrants and refugees, especially
when based on misinforma on.
"How many mes do you hear them speak of 'illegal' as a
synonym for migrant? This is incorrect; it is informa on that
starts from an incorrect basis, and that pushes the public to
develop a nega ve opinion," he said.
"This points to the media's obsession with sensa onalism
and nega ve stories which grab the public's a en on," he
said. We always hear about any bad thing that an immigrant
or refugee does, but it's a "rare piece of news" that focuses
on the good stories about them.
Good informa on is the kind that can "break down the
walls of fear and indierence," he con nued. Only when
the media, through images and stories, presents the human
aspect, can we move beyond the stereotypes and the fear,
and really encounter and welcome other people.

universality, since "ethnic and cultural diversity is a dimension
of the Church's life, which in the Spirit of Pentecost is open to

"We must not lose the sense of fraternal responsibility.
The defence of human beings knows no barriers; we are all
united in wan ng to ensure a dignified life for every man,

The Pope said that he thinks especially of people fleeing
conflict, persecu on, natural or man-made disasters,
as well as tracked persons and those in exploita ve
situa ons, par cularly migrant workers, women, adolescents

gi - the Cross of WYD. On Palm Sunday in St Peter's Square, the
young people from Poland passed it to the youth from Panama.
Angel was one of those who received it - a symbolic gesture
that St John Paul II gave to the youth, and has been going around
the world for over 30 years.
Angel Moses Poveda said, "I feel very excited and very nervous
at the same me, because the work that I have to do on Sunday
is a great responsibility."
Angel said that he has trained to carry the Cross to his country,
but it is not so much about the muscles, as it is the heart.
"I exercise, but it is not like I have put too much training into
carrying the Cross. Also spiritually yes, a lot of reflec on."
Two hundred young people from Panama have travelled to
the Eternal City for this special occasion with Pope Francis.
The group comes from the parish of St John the Apostle of

Cardinal Gracias prays for Syria
Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay and President of
the Federa on of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC), expressed
to AsiaNews his deep sorrow for the US decision to a ack a

town near Idlib.

CBCI is deeply pained and
concerned by bombings in the
Coptic Churches in Egypt
The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) strongly
condemns the deadly twin Palm Sunday Church bombings
in Tanta and Alexandria in Egypt. The first bombing in St
George's Church in Tanta city claimed around 27 lives.
Emergency services had barely reached the site when
another blast rocked St Mark's Church in Alexandria, killing
at least 11 people, where Cop c Pope Tawadros II himself
had been leading the Palm Sunday service. Apart from those
who lost their lives, at least 60 people were injured in Tanta
while around 35 were wounded in Alexandria. Such inhuman
acts cannot be tolerated, and while we welcome the decision
of the Egyptian Government to declare a three-month
Emergency, we also hope that the perpetrators of these
brutal inhuman acts will be traced and punished.
The Catholic Church in India also shares and reiterates
the expression of profound grief of His Holiness, Pope
Francis, following the Church a acks. To His Holiness Pope
Tawadros II, to the Cop c Church and to all ci zens of the
dear country, Egypt, we convey our deep condolences,
as the Catholic Church in India is deeply concerned and
express our solidarity with the Cop c Church in Egypt and

Court asks Tamil Nadu to
waive farm loans for all
A division bench of the Madras High Court has directed
the Tamil Nadu government to waive loans of all farmers,
irrespec ve of their landholding.

The bench, headed by Jus ce S Nagamuthu, asserted that
there was no ra onale behind the classifica on of farmers
into three groups for gran ng loan waiver.
The High Court's direc on will force the state government
to bear an additional burden of Rs 19.8 billion over the
already commi ed Rs 57.8 billion.
The order brings relief to 301,926 farmers in addi on to
1,694,145 farmers, who have already benefi ed.
Observing that the order could prove burdensome for the
state, the court urged the federal government to share the
burden. "We are hopeful that the Government of India will
share the burden considering the unprecedented situa on
prevailing in the State."

Christians gathered for Palm Sunday Mass; the attack in
Sweden occurred two days earlier when a truck ran through a
crowd outside a busy department store in central Stockholm,

In a joint report, presented at a conference hosted by the
United Na ons, six aid agencies - including Cafod - argue
that aid must be provided to the countries surrounding
Syria, as more than five million - a quarter of the country's
pre-war popula on - flee into neighbouring countries.
Coinciding with the start of the conference, a suspected
chemical attack in northern Syria saw 59 persons killed,
and hundreds injured. Planes are reported to have dropped
weaponry laced with unidentified chemicals on the rebel-
held town of Khan Sheikhoun in the Idlib province on April 4.
Vic ms are said to be exhibi ng symptoms resembling those
caused by exposure to sarin gas. If confirmed, it would be one
of the deadliest chemical a acks in Syria, since the civil war
began six years ago.
The Syrian government has repeatedly denied using
chemical weapons. Calling for an end to "this terrible conflict,"
Alan Thomlinson, Cafod's Syria Programme Manager said:
"Deadly a acks, such as the alleged chemical a ack in Idlib,
result in even more deaths and people being forced to leave.
Those who decide to stay, as well as the more than five million
Syrian refugees seeking safety outside the country, all urgently
need our support."
The EU estimates that about 13.5 million Syrians need
humanitarian assistance inside the country, while another five
million have fled, mostly to Turkey and other neighbouring
countries. The UN says 3.4 billion euros is needed for internal
humanitarian aid this year, and 4.7 billion euros is required for
the refugees.

Priest ministers in hometown
A newly-ordained priest has described returning with the
Blessed Sacrament to his home village in northern Iraq, a er
it was finally liberated from Daesh (ISIS) extremists. Fr Mar n
Banni, who as a seminarian in August 2014, fled Karamlesh
holding the Blessed Sacrament, reported to 'Aid to the
Church in Need' how he had just gone back to the village in
the Nineveh Plains, carrying the Sacred Host.
Fr Banni, who is in his mid-20s, described his joy at the
home-coming to the village's St Addai Church. In a message
to John Pon fex, who met the young man in October 2014
a er he had been displaced to Kurdish northern Iraq, Fr Banni
stated: "When we last spoke, I told you about how I was the
last to leave Karamlesh in the Nineveh Plains with the Blessed
Sacrament in my hands. Daesh were about to occupy our
village; we were forced to leave.
"Now I wish to tell you about my return to Karamlesh - I
was the first priest to bless the people in the church in my
home village in northern Iraq."
Speaking of the Nineveh Plains, which had been a centre
of Chris anity for 1,800 years, he added: "I told you I would
stay in Iraq to serve my people and our Church. Now, I am
delighted to be celebra ng Holy Mass here in Iraq."

Teen pleads guilty over plot
to kill Pope during US visit
17-year-old Santos Colon of Lindenwold, New Jersey pleaded
guilty to charges related to a plot to kill the Pope. The teen
had reportedly devised a plot to kill Pope Francis and detonate
explosives during the Holy Father's visit to Philadelphia for the
World Mee ng of Families in 2015.
The event was the last stop on Pope Francis' six-day trip to
the United States, during which he also visited New York City
and Washington, D.C.
Hundreds of thousands of people were gathered at the
Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the final papal Mass on Sunday,
September 27, 2015.
Colon was 15 years old at the me.
In the months leading up to the Pope's visit, Colon thought
he had made contact with a would-be sniper, when in fact
he was engaging with an undercover FBI source, the Jus ce
Department said in a statement.
"Colon engaged in target reconnaissance with an FBI
confidential source, and instructed the source to purchase
materials to make explosive devices," the department said.
FBI agents were able to quietly arrest Colon about two weeks
before the Pope's visit. According to AFP news agency, the
a ack Colon was plo ng was allegedly inspired by the Islamic
State terrorist group, though it is unclear how connected he
was to the group or whether he had made contact with any of
their members.
Colon has pleaded guilty as an adult to one count of
attempting to provide material support to terrorists. The
charges filed against him as a juvenile have thus been dropped.
According to the Department of Justice, Colon faces a
maximum of 15 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. A date
has not yet been set for sentencing. It is likely that Colon will
be treated in a secure psychiatric facility before serving his
sentence, if convicted.

The necessity and importance
of going to Confession
Sir, I refer to the le er in The Examiner (April 1-7, 2017) on the
above subject by Prof. Robert Castellino. There seems to be some
dierence of opinion in the belief that Confession is mandatory
only once a year for receiving Holy Communion, and an Act
of Contri on is fine, presumably for the rest of the year. From
what we were taught in school and as children, one must be in
a state of grace to receive the Eucharist. Being in a state of grace
means being without mortal sin on one's soul. If an individual
has commi ed a mortal sin, he/she has to make a Confession
obligatorily before receiving the Sacred Species. A sin, to qualify
as mortal, must have three elements. It must be a grave act, It
must be fully understood by the person concerned, and thirdly,
it must be carried out with full consent of the person. If just one
of these condi ons does not exist, the sin is not in the mortal
category. There could be some subjec vity when considering
whether the ma er is grave or not, but if this is not clear, the
verdict is in favour of the individual. Provided this happens in
all sincerity and good inten ons. Under no circumstances can a
person who is in a state of mortal sin go to Communion, without
first making a Confession. Going to Communion in a state of
mortal sin is sacrilegious. Just an Act of Contri on does not grant
one the license to approach the Holy Table. This, I believe, is the
teaching of the Church with regard to receiving Communion. I
hope some theologian or authority from the Church tells us what
is right in keeping with the teachings of the Church.
There are some other aspects of Confession which have not
been touched in the above cited le er. For every confession
to be genuine, the penitent must make an act or purpose of
amendment. This is a determina on not to sin again (at least the
mortal ones). It has to be sincere, and that is not easy. We may,
and probably will, fall again into sin. Nevertheless, each me the
purpose of amendment must be made when confessing. The
other point is Res tu on. If you have stolen something (money
or whatever), it has to be returned for forgiveness to be granted
by God. Similarly, character assassina on has to be revoked by the
person guilty of this sin. The professor has wondered why people
do not go to Confession easily, and has suggested a survey. This
is hardly necessary. The condi ons for making a good Confession
are dicult, and most of us are not disciplined to conform to
the requirements. Prof. Castellino has suggested going to other
parishes for Confession to experience other confessors. This is not
recommended, because a person has to have one confessor, as
far as possible. For similar reasons, one adheres to one doctor,
lawyer, tailor etc. and does not change him on the least pretext.
Over a period of me, the priest gets to know the penitent, his/
her idiosyncrasies and weakness, and is in a posi on to proer
the right advice to the penitent. Like doctors and lawyers and
coaches in sports etc., the priest becomes a professional for the
"customer" (the penitent).
I have wri en at some length in the hope that a debate may be
thrown open, and the viewpoint of the Church becomes evident.

Lenten Mission at IC parish
Sir, Many like me, I am sure, eagerly await recharging our
spiritual lives which happens mainly during the season of
Lent. It is that me of the year for each one of us as Catholics
to introspect deep into our lives as to our rela onship with
God and His people.
Almost all parishes in the Archdiocese of Bombay plan
well in advance, engaging prominent preachers for the
Lenten Mission. Large parishes - Mira Road, Orlem, IC
Borivli - to name a few, draw huge crowds during the
various Missions preached by outside priests in Konkani,
Marathi and English. Some parishes have invited priests and
lay persons from Potta to make the Lenten Mission more
effective and powerful spiritually.
This me, the parishioners of IC Church were fortunate to
have the Redemptorist priests from Chembur, namely Frs Ival,
Henry and Melroy conduc ng the Lenten Mission for almost
two weeks of non-stop preaching. The Mission commenced
from March 26 - April 1, and from April 2-5 for the Youth, and
further from April 6-8 for the general public.
The highlights of the Mission were community celebra on
of the renewal of marriage vows, Sacrament of Reconcilia on,
Way of the Cross and healing of the sick, solemn Eucharist
with consecra on of the parish to our Mother Mary, blessing
for all families, Way of the Cross with special blessing. For the
youth, it was discovering themselves: a Spirit-filled energised
young people, besides answering a number of ques ons that
youth have. All the three preachers were excellent orators,
and the contents were covered well, challenging us to live our
lives spiritually and purposefully. All the days of the Mission,
the church was packed, the extensions on either side of the
church, outside the church and the quadrangle drew huge
crowds. In spite of the parish priests trying to accommodate
people with the maximum number of chairs, people were just
pouring in on all the days of the Mission, thanks to the eec ve
and thought-provoking preaching by the Redemptorist Fathers.

preachers who surely create a major impact in our day to day
lives every year, during the season of Lent. The challenge for
lay people is to con nue with the conversion round the year,
touching the lives of others, tes fying we are Chris ans by

Empty tomb: our hope
Sir, The empty tomb is our hope! If death cannot hold Jesus
cap ve, it cannot have a hold over us. Since we are bap sed
in Christ, we will also rise to live with Him. Easter gives us the
hope that we will rise from all our dead situa ons. The irony
is that Jesus' disciples did not believe in the Resurrec on, but
His enemies believed in the Resurrec on, and so they made
the tomb secure and placed guards. They said to Pilate, "Sir,
we remember what that impostor said while he was s ll alive.
A er three days I will rise again." (Mt 27:63) What a contrast!
They were not with Jesus, but yet they believed that He will rise
a er three days; they remembered His words and believed! We
celebrate Easter year a er year, without truly understanding the
power of the Resurrec on.
For God, me and space does not ma er. Lazarus came to life
a er four days! Something that was humanly impossible was
possible for God. We can ask Jesus to breathe life into all our
impossible situa ons. He breathed on them, and said to them,
"Receive the Holy Spirit." (Jn 20:32) Jesus breathed life into His
disciples! The story of the Resurrec on and the empty tomb
gives us great hope and courage to carry on in life. For nothing
is impossible for God!
