Genres in Academic Writing: Research Report Discussions

According to UEfAP, the discussion section in a research paper is important in order to

show that the results lead to the conclusion. The things that should be included in the discussion

section of a research paper are a reference to the reason of the study, a review of the important

findings as well as a summary of the results, possible explanations for findings, a comparison of

expected results to other studies, and limitations of the study. This is important to know because

it shows how the discussion section should be written and also explains each portion of the

needed topics in the discussion section.

How to Critique a Journal Article

According to the Center for Teaching and Learning at UIS, a review of a journal article

should include; the name of the author, the title of the article, the title of the journal, volume

number, date, month and page numbers, a statement of the problem or issue being discussed, and

the authors purpose, approach or methods, hypothesis, and major conclusions. They also state

that the most important part of the review should be your own opinion of the article. This is

important because critiquing journal articles are completely essential when writing a research

essay since you need good sources for the research and you must understand what the articles are

about in order to write about them and to also efficiently tie them into the research essay.
