Reflection Essay
My multimodal project is about Domestic Violence Among Children. I
decided to do domestic violence as my topic because I have a certain
amount of knowledge about it. After deciding what would be my topic, I
started to do my research for update articles and look for primarily sources
to establish trust with my audience. The writing process was challenging and
the most difficult part for me because there is a greatly among of descriptive
information. First of all, I began with annotations and summaries about every
single article. Then I separated the most important parts to do my project. To
make this happen I selected the brochure format as my multimodal project
because it is more informative and at the same time I would be able to put
visual images to persuade my audience. That is why I decided to select a
brochure as my project. The main point of this brochure is to inform, explain
and give advice to people that are handling domestic violence.
Later, when I finished my decision on the topic and decided between
an infographic or a brochure I came out with an idea to organize my project
with a chronological pattern. First I will give statistics; for example, did you
know that 3-4 million children between the ages of 3-17 are at risk of
exposure to domestic violence each year. That 95 percent of domestic
violence cases involve women victims of male partners and the children of
these women often witness the domestic violence too. Well I selected these
types of statistics because I want an effective persuasion between the
message and the audience. Also, I incorporate these facts to have a
rhetorical appeal to influence my audience about the important of domestic
violence using logos as my catch device. Next, I will explain the definition of
What is domestic violence?, so domestic violence is when a parent or
someone relative in the family abuse from other. The abuse can be sexual,
emotional, physical or the three together. Physical abuse is when a person
does aggression; this type of abuse is implying with throwing objects,
slapping, or pushing. Emotional abuse is when a person expose another
person resulting in psychological trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, eating
disorders, etc. Sexual abuse is defined as sexual activity with a minor,
women or men. This type of abuse is known as committing crime because
this action is forced. I tried to define domestic violence and the type of abuse
because I want that my audience understand the meaning of doing or
receiving abuse because it is a critical problem.
Afterwards, I will provide a cycle where it explains stages of how the
domestic violence develop in a high-risk level. The first stage is the tension
building phase; this phase is when the primarily conflict is money, children or
jobs. The abuser starts to get angry and creates conflict with a minor
physical and emotional abuse. Next stage is the acute battering episode; this
phase is when the abuser starts with physical, sexual, emotional, and verbal

abuse. The abuser blames the victim for causing the abuse. Last phase is the
honeymoon phase; In this phase, the abuser is ashamed of his behavior. He
tries to control the abuse and try or maybe blame other people because of
his actions. Also, the abuser probably convinces the victim that leaving is not
necessary to solve the conflict. Furthermore, I will give safety strategies to
help people dealing with domestic violence; for example, reach for help with
someone you trust it can be a friend, family member or administrator, but it
is important that you speak and feel better. Another one is informing yourself
about what you are dealing because a research can help you to know what is
happening in your life. Also, search for organizations that can help you. For
instance, to finalize my brochure I provided two major organization helping
people about this problem. The first one I found is the National Coalition
Against Domestic Violence. This organization collaborates with other
organization to promote help to people that are involve with domestic
violence. This organization also provide information about domestic violence
relative with laws, policy, and studies. The other organization is the No More.
The No More organization promotes the end of domestic violence and sexual
assault. This organization is supported by other nations and local groups,
individuals, organizations, universities and communities. I also provide
phones and emails in case my readers want to contact these organizations. I
used ethos when I provided the contact information to my readers.
For the design, I selected a color green because green means safety
and growth and that is what I want to convey to this people handling
domestic violence. They must know that there is a safety and growth place
for them. This is an example of pathos. Also, I am going to use different
images that appeals the sensibilities of my audience. Moreover, I tried to use
big headings to emphasize what each paragraph I am going to discuss
because each paragraph focuses on one main point. My brochure also
provides bullets to list all of the main solutions to each paragraph. To finalize
this is how I created my multimodal to help people handling domestic
violence. Also, I tried to make the brochure for every type of audience, so
they can inform people what can they do if they are in this situation.
