COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Teen Choices & Challenges The purpose of this course is to acquire academic knowledge and understanding
necessary for healthy decision making during the teen years. Students integrate knowledge, skills and practices
required by individuals to develop, manage and strengthen; personal power and success, personal wellness,
personal relationships, understanding personal sexuality and teens the law. Emphasis is placed on teens as
valued individuals who take responsibility for personal success and contribute to family and community well-
being. With a passing grade, students will receive their Health graduation requirement through this class.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Instruction in this course will focus on the following teaching and learning objectives:
1. Personal Growth (Values, Goals, Self-Concept, Communication, Decision Making)
2. Personal Wellness (Mental, emotional, physical, social health)
3. Personal Relationships (Healthy vs Unhealthy, Families, Friends/Peers, Dating)
4. Understanding Human Sexuality (comprehensive sexual education)
5. Addiction and Substance Abuse
6. Teenagers and the Law

ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS:
At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to describe, define, and analyze:
1. Specific areas of personal growth throughout the lifespan
2. Personal goals relating to ones values and self-concept
3. Support systems for teenagers, who can they go and talk to?
4. Proper stress management techniques, nutrition, and overall wellness practices
5. Stages of healthy and unhealthy relationships
6. Female and male reproductive systems
7. A broad sense of conception and pregnancy
8. Budgeting for different situations in your life, why is it important?
9. Substance abuse or addiction problems
10. Effects (both short and long term) of abusing drugs and alcohol
11. Specific laws relating to teenagers in the Fort Collins area

COURSE LEVEL:
This course is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. There are no prerequisites.

COURSE INSTRUCTION:
Instruction in Teen Choices and Challenges is primarily discussion, group projects, and independent research. At the
beginning of each new unit, students will be expected to take notes and listen to lecture materials. Other methods include,
but are not limited to, audio-visual presentation, computer-assisted instruction, and guest speakers/panels.
COURSE CONTENT:
This course will include several source materials as well as audio-visual materials and occasional outside speakers who
focus on specific topics relating to Teen Choices and Challenges. The Ready or Not program will be in your classroom for
one week, and this is when you will take home your simulated baby. The textbook for this class is My Health and will
be used sparingly throughout the semester.

Baby Dates (Thursday-Monday): March 23rd- 27th OR March 30th- April 2nd OR April 13th-16th
If you do not wish to participate in the Ready or Not Program there is an alternative assignment!
GRADES:
Letter grades are earned by the student based upon the following percentage of possible points: 100-90% = A, 89-80% =
B, 79-70% = C, 69-60% = D, >60% = Failure. Total points possible include numerical evaluations for homework,
quizzes, projects, research and essays, unit tests, and mid-term and comprehensive, final examinations.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES - STUDENTS WILL ADHERE TO ALL FCHS POLICIES AND THE POUDRE
SCHOOL DISTRICT CODE OF CONDUCT AT ALL TIMES TO INCLUDE, BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO,
THE FOLLOWING (See Contract): We will be developing our own classroom expectation list as well.
1. Attendance Students must attend class to receive the greatest benefit from instruction and class interaction. Students
who miss class are never able to completely make up missed work. Nevertheless, students with excused absences will be
allowed to make up work according to Poudre School District policy. It is the students responsibility to contact the
instructor outside of class to complete missed assignments.

2. Participation Each student is responsible for participating in class discussions, making presentations when assigned
to do so, and contributing to the learning environment of the class. In order to fulfill his/her responsibility, it is necessary
to be in class, on time with all materials.

3. Assignments Students are responsible for coming to class prepared. All assignments are due at the start of the class
on the date the assignment is due. If you lose an assignment, please consult Blackboard. Late work is not accepted once
we have started a new unit.

4. Food, Drink: Food and drink are not allowed in class, but water is permissible. If you find it necessary to chew gum,
please keep it to yourself.

5. Electronic Devices No electronic device of any kind may be used in class without permission. The presence of an
electronic device during a test or quiz will be considered prima facie evidence of academic dishonesty.

6. Final Examination There will be a district cumulative final exam in this class.

Course Technology Expectations


Digital literacy is a valued skill at FCHS and essential for post-secondary readiness in the 21 century. This course

has a technology expectation that students come to class prepared with school issued technology devices every day.
Failure to come to class prepared may result in loss of credit for assigned work during that class period.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:
Each student is required to do his/her own work. Plagiarism and/or cheating will not be tolerated, and if detected, will
result in disciplinary referral and action. The Fort Collins Student Handbook outlines the consequences for cheating and
plagiarism, and the instructor will, with the assistance of an administrator, implement the policy. A first incident of
plagiarism and/or cheating will result in a zero. Additional incidents may result in expulsion from school. Please consult
the Handbook for the full text of the consequences for academic dishonesty.
