USA Water Polo, Inc. is a not-for-
profit corporation that serves as
the national governing body for the
sport of water polo in the United
States under authority of the United
States Olympic Committee.
Mission Statement
The Mission of USA Water Polo shall be to grow
the sport of water polo throughout the United
States and win medals in Olympic, World Cham-
pionship, and Pan American Games.

Splashball
Splashball is designed to
introduce the sport of water
polo to children 5-9 years old.
The intent is to provide basic
skills and understanding of the
sport in a recreational format.
Although water polo is known for its toughness
and endurance, Splashball harnesses all the fun,
dynamic aspects of the game in a safe, easy to
learn aquatic experience that will motivate kids

Masters Water Polo
USAWP supports and
promotes competition and
events among its members
domestically and international-
ly. Membership in Masters
Water Polo is available to
anyone age 20 and older. Each year dozens of
tournaments are held throughout the US
highlighted by the USA Water Polo Masters
National Championships each June. Champions
are crowned in 20+, 30+, 40+, 45+, 50+,
55+, and 60+ age categories for men. Women
contest in the 20+, 30+, 40+, 50+, and 55+
age groups.
US Leagues
US Leagues is a program of
USA Water Polo designed to
provide a low cost, entry-level
membership for water polo
athletes and coaches all ages
and skill levels. All US League
athletes, coaches and referees will receive the
basic benefits provided to all USA Water Polo
Members for the duration of the league.
This program is a flexible platform for water polo
groups throughout the country to provide safe,
insured, supervised water polo programming for
all ages and playing levels.
Olympic Development Program
The mission of USA Water
Polos (USAWP) Olympic
Development Program is to
unify the American system of
play and increase the number
of athletes, coaches and
referees in the system with an emphasis on long
term improvement. The program serves as the
entry into USAWP Olympic Development Pipeline
and offers incentives for USAWP athletes,
coaches and referees to compete for inclusion
and advancement. Once accepted into the
Olympic Development Program, athletes, coaches
and referees will be taught the American System
of Water Polo.

ince the 2012 Olympic games much has
changed for the USA Water Polo Mens
Senior National Team. A brand-new
coaching staff was installed in 2013, and
heading into the 2016 Olympic games,
only four athletes remain from the team that took
home a disappointing eighth-place finish in London.
Dejan Udovicic took over as head coach of Team USA
in May 2013and since then the results have been
promising. The red, white, and blue have been in the
top-five in four major FINA competitions, taking fourth
place at the 2014 FINA World Cup, fifth place at the
2014 World League Super Final, and fourth place
at the 2013 FINA World League Super Final. Add to
that a gold medal at the 2014 and 2016 FINA Mens
Intercontinental Tournament, a bronze at the 2015
edition, a silver at the 2016 FINA World League Super
Final and Team USA is poised for a leap back into the
elite rankings of international water polo.
The main focus of 2015 was qualifying for the 2016
Olympic games. Team USA accomplished that with
a strong showing at the 2015 Pan American Games
in Toronto, Canada. Only needing to beat Canada in
the semifinals to secure a berth, the United States
took down both Canada and Brazil in the final to
punch a ticket to Rio and claim the Pan Am crown.
The summer of 2015 showed promise at other times.
The United States topped world power and Olympic
favorite Serbia in four straight matches played in
America in June. They also went on to score wins over
Hungary at the FINA World League Super Final and Italy
at the FINA World Championship. While the podium has
eluded Team USA at the major FINA competitions, the
hope is that all the recent minor successes combined
with months of intense full-time training will coalesce to
produce a medal-worthy effort in Rio.
Udovicic, the longtime head coach of the Serbian Mens
National Team, has two Olympic Bronze medals and a
FINA World Championship under his belt from his time
with the eastern European power. Now hes looking to
develop that same success with Team USA. Hes joined
by Assistant Coaches Jack Kocur and Alex Rodriguez,
along with veteran Team Manager Rick McKee.
Team USA will bring a blend of veteran leadership with
experience in multiple Olympic games along with ris-
ing talent from the collegiate ranks that have solidified
spots on the National Team in the last two years.
Four-time Olympian Tony Azevedo joins three-time
Olympian Jesse Smith, two-time Olympian Merrill
Moses, and 2012 Olympian John Mann as the
leaders of a group of emerging stars.
Preparation for Rio is already underway for Team
USA, and their best chances to win big in Brazil in
2016 starts now.
GOALKEEPERS
The cage is in good hands with veteran Merrill
Moses (Palos Verdes, CA/Pepperdine/NYAC). The
2008 Olympic silver medalist has been a mainstay
in net since 2006 and looks to be a steady presence
behind a defense with mixed levels of experience.
Now an assistant coach with Pepperdine, Moses
helped Team USA to a fourth-place finish at the FINA
World Cup in the summer of 2014.
McQuin Baron (North Tustin, CA/USC/Regency) rep-
resents the future in the cage for Team USA. Boasting
a 6 9 frame, the goalkeeper for the USC Trojans has
started for Team USA in various tournaments over the
last 18 months. More than a capable back up, hell look
to build his resume of experience in the run up to Rio.
Rounding out the keepers is Stanford Cardinal Drew
Holland (Orinda, CA/Stanford/Stanford). Holland
has pushed Baron for the back-up position and
looks to be an important piece of the Team USA
goalkeeping efforts leading up to Rio and beyond.
DEFENDERS
Three-time Olympian Jesse Smith (Coronado, CA/
Pepperdine/NYAC) anchors a versatile group of
defenders. Smith is a utility for Team USA, blending
the ability to do it all from guarding the oppositions
best player to boasting a powerful outside shot. The
Pepperdine alum earned a Silver medal with Team
USA in 2008 and has competed for a handful of pro-
fessional European clubmost recently Olympiakos
in Greece, helping the squad to a one-loss season
and the title match of the LEN Final Six.
College talents Jackson Kimbell (Long Beach,
CA/Stanford/Stanford), Alex Roelse (Maarssen,
Netherlands/UCLA/Bruin), and Nic Carniglia (Lodi,
CA/California/Davis) join Smith in the defensive unit,
all taking time off from their academic studies to train

with Team USA. Kimbells father, Doug, competed for
Team USA in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games; the
younger Kimbell will look to bring some of that same
competitive fire for Team USA. Roelse, formerly of the
Dutch National Team, was a key player for the UCLA
Bruins in 2014 and 2015, helping the team to back-
to-back NCAA titles. He brings excellent size when it
comes to guarding opposing two-meter men. Coming
off his sophomore season with the California Golden
Bears, Carniglia has been a key piece of the Mens
National Team pipeline, earning Gold in 2013 at the
UANA Youth Pan American Championships.
CENTERS
2012 Olympian and Cutino Award winner John Mann
(Newport Beach, CA/California/NYAC) leads the
way at center for Team USA. Coming off a French
Championship with his club team C.N. Marseille in
2014-15, Mann has developed from a perimeter threat
to a major force at two meters during his career on
the National Team. Hes also stepped into a leadership
role, serving as Team Captain in Azevedos absence
in 2014. Joining Mann is University of the Pacific grad
Alex Obert (Loomis, CA/Pacific/Sac Polo) whos
played a major role at two meters for the United States
since 2013 and brings a pivotal one-two punch with
Mann for Coach Udovicic. Obert also powered Pacific
to the NCAA title match in 2013 and has gained
valuable experience competing for the red, white, and
blue. He was a Cutino Award finalist in 2016.
High school star and Stanford commit Ben Hallock
(Westlake Village, CA/Harvard Westlake/LA
Premier) continues his rise through the Team USA
pipeline fresh off another strong season at Harvard
Westlake where the school once again reached the
CIF-Southern Section Division 1 final. An aggressive
presence at center, Hallock figures to learn from the
likes of Mann and Obert.
ATTACKERS
Team USA is loaded at the attacker position with a bevy
of high scorers. Four-time Olympian and longtime USA
captain Tony Azevedo (Long Beach, CA/Stanford/
NYAC) bolsters the front line with the ability to score
from all angles. A 2008 Olympic Silver medalist,
Azevedo looks to set a USA Water Polo record this year
by appearing in his fifth Olympics. A four-time Cutino
Award winner in college, Azevedo builds on a career
as one of the best in USA Water Polo players in history.
After taking 2014 off from the National Team as the
squad focused on the development of younger athletes,
Azevedo continues the lead the team in and out of the
water. The 2016 Olympic games will be a homecoming
for Azevedo who was born in Rio de Janeiro and still
has many relatives in the area.

National Team veteran Josh Samuels (Villa Park, CA/
UCLA/NYAC) adds to the mix on the offensive and de-
fensive ends. A UCLA grad, Samuels has spent time
playing in Europe helping to develop his game with
the rigors of international play. A long-armed defender,
Samuels always finds a way to pick the defenses
pocket while adding a powerful outside shot.
Former Stanford teammates Alex Bowen (Santee,
CA/Stanford/NYAC) and Bret Bonanni (Huntington
Beach, CA/Stanford/NYAC) add firepower to the
offense and crucial familiarity that comes from being
longtime teammates. Bowen just finished up interna-
tional play with a professional team in Romania while
Bonanni capped a stellar career at Stanford, being
named a Cutino Award finalist. Bowen is a physical
presence with a powerful shot from the perimeter
while Bonanni has been lighting up goalkeepers since
his time at scholastic power Mater Dei.
Luca Cupido (Newport Beach, CA/California/Newport
Beach WPC) and Nikola Vavic (Palos Verdes, CA/
USC/Trojan) round out the group of attackers. Cupido
comes off a strong sophomore season for the Cal
Bears and has international experience competing for
the Italian National Team. Now a member of Team USA,
Cupido brings a quick shot and a knack for goals in
the clutch. He scored the game-winning strike to win
Gold against Australia at the 2016 FINA Intercontinental
Tournament with just two seconds to play. In the
summer of 2016 he twice made shots at the end of
regulation to beat Serbia in exhibition matches. Vavic,
son of USC coaching legend Jovan Vavic, is one of two
key left-handers for Team USA. A prolific scorer in his
college days at USC, Vavic ended his career as a four-
time NCAA champion and the all-time leading scorer in
school history. He also helps spread out defenses and
can deliver precision passes to two meters.
Fellow lefty Thomas Dunstan (New Canaan, CT/Mater
Dei HS/Regency) adds to the attacker mix. Packing a
strong shot from the perimeter, the USC commit has
relocated from Connecticut to Southern California to
pursue his Olympic dreams. Dunstans offense and
defense have improved in the last year as he builds on
a future with Team USA.

ith the 2016 Olympic Games on
the horizon and the responsibility
of defending an Olympic gold
medal at hand, the pressure is
on for a group that will feature
nine first-time Olympians this summer in Brazil. While
some personnel has changed, the goalsand in
many cases, the resultshave remained the same.
Following the success in 2012, Team USA was
brought down to earth in the summer of 2013, earning
a fifth-place finish at the 2013 FINA World Champion-
ships in Barcelona. But that bump in the road would
ignite a run of excellence thats starting to mirror what
transpired midway through the previous quadrennial.
In the last two years, the red, white, and blue has
earned Gold at five major FINA events, including the
2014, 2015, and 2016 FINA World League Super Fi-
nal, along with the 2014 FINA World Cupthe teams
second-straight World Cup crown. The most recent
major Gold came in Kazan, Russia, at the 2015 FINA
World Championships where Team USA earned its
first world crown since 2009. Add a Gold medal at the
2015 Pan American Games, and it was a near perfect
campaign as Team USA went 41-6 over the calendar
year, claiming every major title in its path.
Despite all the success, somehow the women still
had to earn an Olympic games berth. With Brazil
serving as host, the normal route of continental
qualification through the Pan American Games was
not an option. So that left the Olympic Qualification
Tournament this past March as the teams one and
only opportunity. Team USA left no doubt it belonged
in Rio as it blitzed the field, turning in a perfect 8-0
record, winning the Gold medal, and throttling France
19-0 in the quarterfinals to secure a trip to Brazil.
Team USA didnt break new ground qualifying in
2016; the same thing happened prior to the 2000
Olympic games. While that group made its own
special history as the first to compete in an Olympic
games and winning Silver, the 2016 squad looks to
write the next chapter of the Team USA legacy as
repeat Olympic champions.
The coaching staff has remained the same for Team
USA since 2013 with Head Coach Adam Krikorian
taking the program into his seventh summer. The
UCLA grad has guided Team USA to every cham-
pionship imaginable, including Gold medals at the
Olympics, FINA World Championship, FINA World
Cup, FINA World League Super Final and Pan Ameri-
can Games. Named the USOC Coach of the Year and
a recipient of the Jack Kelly Fair Play Award, Krikorian
is joined by Assistant Coaches Dan Klatt and Chris
Oeding along with Team Manager Jen Funakara.
Those in the water for Team USA will see four
holdovers from the team that lit up the 2012 Olympic
games along with a host of up-and-coming talent
thats earned time with Team USA since 2013.
Center Kami Craig is the last remaining athlete from
the Silver medal-winning team at the 2008 Olympic
games. One of the top centers in the world, shes
joined by 2012 returners and fellow Gold medalists
Maggie Steffens, Courtney Mathewson, and Melissa
Seidemann.
This quartet will lead a mix of the top post-college
talent and current collegiate stars in addition to
phenoms from the high school ranks.
Theyll all try to fill the shoes of a host of talented
Olympians who retired after London 2012. Immedi-
ately following London, four-time Olympic medalists
and water polo legends Brenda Villa and Heather
Petri retired from international play. They were joined
by two-time Olympic medalists Jessica Steffens,
Elsie Windes, and Lauren Wenger. In the years to
come fellow two-time Olympic medalists Betsey
Armstrong and Kelly Rulon would depart, joined
by 2012 Olympic Gold Medalists Tumua Anae and
Annika Dries.
The new group looks to continue the standard the
previous group establishedone thats seen a
medal in every Olympic games to offer womens
water polo, four FINA World Championship crowns,
two FINA World Cup titles, and four Pan American
Games victories, all in the last 15 years. From the
following 17 athletes, 13 will be chosen to represent
the United States in Brazil.
Team USA is ready for Rio, and as the USA Water
Polo slogan for the summer of 2016 suggests, its
ready to Be VictoRIOus.

GOALKEEPERS
Those who followed Team USA in London will re-
member two dynamic goalkeepers: Betsey Armstrong
and Tumua Anae. Losing one of most decorated
goalkeepers in international play in Armstrong would
be tough for any team to take. Add to it the departure
of NCAA Champion and fellow Olympic Gold medalist
Anae, and you might just have a problem. Thankfully
for Team USA, three of the best college goalies have
seized the opportunity to shine.
Since the summer of 2014, the race for the starting
goalkeeper position has been a two-athlete compe-
tition between Sami Hill (Santa Barbara, CA/UCLA/
Santa Barbara) and Ashleigh Johnson (Miami,
FL/Princeton/NYAC). In the last year, Johnson has
emerged as the starter and one of the most intimidat-
ing athletes in womens water polo. Behind a big smile
and calm demeanor is a fierce competitor capable of
blocking almost any shot. Named MVP of the 2015
FINA World Championship Gold-medal match, John-
son was also a semifinalist for the 2015 AAU Sullivan
Award. In 2016 Johnson redshirted her senior year
at Princeton to focus on Team USAs pursuits, but the
Miami native has been a force for the Tigers, leading
Princeton to the NCAA Tournament in 2015.
Hill is coming off a standout career with UCLA where
she guided the Bruins to the MPSF Championship
and the NCAA final in 2015. That year she also was
named a finalist for the Cutino Award. No stranger
to getting the starting nod, Hill piloted Team USA to
Gold at the 2014 FINA World Cup. Her fun-loving de-
meanor helped spawn the #FlopFriday trend thats
gone viral among the water polo community where
teams start practices on Friday with a belly flop.
While Johnson is likely to start, Team USA is in
capable hands with Hill. To give you an idea of
how close these two are, Johnson was named top
goalkeeper of the FINA World Cup in 2014 and Hill
picked up the win in the Gold-medal final.
Adding to that mix is Gabby Stone (La Jolla, CA/
Stanford/Stanford), starting keeper for two-time NCAA
champions Stanford Cardinal whos picked up steam in
recent years to join the conversation as one of the top
in the college game alongside Hill and Johnson. Stone
redshirted her 2016 season to train with Team USA
but is expected to return to The Farm for the 2017
season as one of the top keepers in the country.
DEFENDERS
The defender position has been an area of stability
of late, as its anchored by 2012 Olympic Gold

Medalist Melissa Seidemann (Walnut Creek, CA/
Stanford/Stanford) and National Team veteran KK
Clark ( Menlo Park, CA/UCLA/NYAC). Seidemann,
a Stanford grad, brings a necessary tenacity to
the position. Gifted with a near effortless outside
shot, Seidemann has the ability to defend just about
anyone the opposition sends her way. She has
added overseas experience to her resume recently,
competing for a professional club in Spain. Clark
lends excellent length and athletic ability to the po-
sition and has been a mainstay for Team USA since
2013. An NCAA Champion at UCLA, Clark is no
stranger to offense, possessing the ability to deliver
from the perimeter.
Alys Williams (Huntington Beach, CA/UCLA/
Huntington Beach WPC) and Makenzie Fischer
(Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach HS/SET) round
out this group. Williams, a standout at UCLA,
redshirted the 2016 season to train with Team USA
after helping the Bruins to the NCAA final in 2015.
She brings a mix of outside scoring with a strong
defensive presence. Fischer, a prolific scorer herself,
piled up 138 goals for Laguna Beach High School as
the squad took a CIF title in 2015. A long defender,
Fischer can make things difficult for the opposition
and has become an essential piece of the Team USA
defensive puzzle. Shes also come into her own as a
scorer on the international stage, leading Team USA
in offense at the FINA Intercontinental Tournament in
February with 13 goals.
CENTERS
Team USA is lucky to return arguably the best center
in womens international water polo in Kami Craig
(Santa Barbara, CA/USC/NYAC). The two-time

Olympic medalist has gone from the youngest on the
team during the 2008 Olympic Games to a veteran
preparing for her third trip to the Olympics. Shes
added more experience to her resume recently,
competing in Greece, Australia, and Italy. A two-time
Cutino Award winner in her college days, Craig also
earned an NCAA crown with USC in 2010.
Stanford graduate and three-time NCAA Champion
Ashley Grossman (Santa Monica, CA/Stanford/
NYAC) and high school phenom Aria Fischer
(Laguna Beach, CA/Laguna Beach HS/SET) join
Craig at the center spot. A powerful force who has

Dejan Udovicic
was named head
coach of the Mens
Senior National
Team on May 7,
2013. Udovicic, for-
mer head coach of
the Serbian national
team, joined USA
Water Polo after
leading Serbia to a
Bronze medal at the
2012 London Olympic Games, his 16th medal in
his last 17 major championship events. The most
successful coach in Serbian team sports, Udovicic
has compiled nearly 500 victories while winning
more than 80 percent of all his matches. Most
recently he led the Radnicki Water Polo Club to a
Euro Cup title and an appearance in the Serbian
National Championship final in the squads first
year of competition.
Udovicic was named head coach of the
Serbian National Team in June 2006 following
the separation of Serbia and Montenegro. In the
succeeding six years he built Serbia into a water
polo powerhouse. To wit: a FINA World Champi-
onship in 2009, two FINA World Cup titles in 2006
and 2010, two European Championships in 2006
and 2012, two Bronze medals in the 2008 and 2012
Olympic Games, and five FINA World League Super
Final titles.
In addition to his duties with the national team,
Udovicic was also the longtime coach of VK Partizan,
one of Serbias top water polo clubs. From 2000
to 2009 he led the club to four national champion-
ships, four national cups, and an appearance in the
Euroleague final four. No stranger to the action inside
the pool, Udovicic played for Partizan along with
neighboring VK Beograd, in an athletic career that
spanned more than a decade.
His first major as head coach of Team USA
saw the team take fourth place at the 2013 FINA
World League Super Final. As of late Udovicic has
kept Team USA in medal contention at major FINA

Championships earning a fourth place mark at the
2014 FINA World Cup. In 2015 the United States
qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games with a gold
medal at the Pan American Games. That was
followed by a silver medal at the 2016 FINA World
League Super Final, marking the first medal at a
major FINA competition for Team USA since 2008.

The former head coach of the Pepperdine
Mens Water Polo Team, Kocur is a former assis-
tant coach for the USC Mens Water Polo Team
where he helped the Trojans to their fifth straight
NCAA Championship in 2012.
During his time at Pepperdine, Kocur led the
Waves to an overall record of 95-78 (.549), includ-
ing winning records in three of his six seasons.
In 2008, Kocur was named MPSF Co-Coach of
the Year as the Waves went 21-7, earning a No.
2 national ranking. Prior to becoming head coach,
Kocur was an assistant coach at Pepperdine for
four seasons under Terry Schroeder.
As a player, Kocur was a first-team All-Ameri-
can and a member of Pepperdines 1997 national
championship team. He also competed in more
than 125 international games with the U.S. Nation-
al Team.
Currently Kocur is the head coach of Oaks
Christian School boys and girls water polo in
Westlake Village, CA.

Adam Krikorian,
Head Coach
Since taking over
the Womens Senior
National Team, Adam
Krikorian has been in
a word, successful.
From his arrival in
2009, Team USA has
competed in 15major
FINA Championships
and come away with
Gold in 11 of them.
This includes the 2009 and 2015 FINA World
Championships, the 2010 and 2014 FINA World
Cups, seven FINA World League Super Final
crowns, and most famously an Olympic Gold
Medal at the 2012 games. Hes helped the United
States maintain a number-one world ranking
for the majority of his tenure and was honored
in 2013 with the USOC National Coach of Year
Awardonly the second water polo coach to
receive the honor. In the fall of 2013, Krikorian
also was named the recipient of the USOC Jack
Kelly Fair Play Award.
Krikorian was named head coach of the USA
Water Polo Womens Senior National Team on
March 27, 2009. He had been head coach of the
UCLA mens and womens programs for 10 years
prior.
A standout player at UCLA from 1992 to 1995,
Krikorian captained the squad in his final year,
leading UCLA to the 1995 Mens NCAA Champi-
onship, the schools first title in 23 years.
Krikorian has earned National Womens Water
Polo Coach of the Year honors five times: in 2001
and from 2005 through 2008. He also received
National Mens Coach of the Year honors in 2004
after leading the UCLA program to its eighth
overall NCAA championship. He has guided the
womens team to seven national championships,
six sanctioned by the NCAA, including a string
of five consecutive titles. In addition hes piloted
the mens program to three NCAA titles; two of
the three came as he served as co-head coach
with Guy Baker.
Krikorian graduated from UCLA with a psy-

chology degree and a business administration
emphasis in June 1997. In May 2001 Krikorian
married Anicia Mendez, a four-year Bruin
letter-winner in varsity tennis who completed her
MBA at UCLA. Adam and Anicia reside in Man-
hattan Beach, CA, with their son, Jack (born July
2006) and daughter Annabel (born June 2009).
Dan Klatt,

coach in April 2010. In 2013
Klatt was named head coach
of the USA Water Polo Wom-
ens Junior National Team. Klatt led the Senior B
Team to a first-place finish at the Canada Cup in late
2009 and returned to the national team scene after a
decorated playing career.
Klatt is a 2001 graduate of UC-Irvine and helped
guide the Anteaters to multiple Big West Tournament
Championship crowns and NCAA Championship
appearances in 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015. He
competed with the USA Mens Senior National Team
during the early 2000s and was part of the group
that took home a seventh-place finish at the 2004
Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
Chris Oeding,
Assistant Coach
Chris Oeding was named
an assistant coach of the
Womens Senior National
Team in the Spring of 2013.

captain of the U.S. Olympic
Mens Water Polo Team at
the 2000 Olympic Games in
Sydney, Australia, Oeding
also is head coach of mens and womens water
polo teams at Long Beach (CA) City College,

as well as the schools swimming and diving
teams.
In 13 seasons at LBCC, Oeding has piled up
more than 300 victories and five state champion-
ships with both the mens and womens teams.
Oeding also was the mens water polo head
coach at Orange Coast (CA) College for five
seasons and also coached womens water polo
and both swim teams there. While at OCC he was
twice named Orange Empire Conference Coach of
the Year (1998, 1999) and led his team to confer-
ence titles in 1997 and 1999.
His standout credentials include his playing ca-
reer. Oeding was a three-time All-American while
at Corona Del Mar (CA) High School and in 1988
was named CIF Player of the Year. He went on to
play at Cal (Berkeley) where he was a three-time
All-American and helped lead the Golden Bears to
three straight NCAA championships. In 1992, he
was named NCAA Co-Player of the Year.
From 1993 to 2000, Oeding was a member
of the U.S. National Water Polo team and was
named captain in 1997. He competed in two
Olympics and helped the U.S. finish seventh at the
1996 Atlanta games and sixth at the 2000 Sydney
Olympics.
Oeding received his bachelors degree from
Cal in 1994 and earned his masters from Azusa
Pacific.
Jen Adams Funakura,
Team Leader
Jen Adams-Funakura
joined USA Water Polo in
November 2009 as the
Womens Senior National
Team Manager. In this
role Jen is responsible for
the day-to-day operations
of the Womens Senior
National Team. She works closely with the head
coach, assistant coaches, and athletes in the
areas of calendar management, travel, scheduling
facilities, events, fundraising, and compliance.
Jen serves as liaison for the National Team to the
other departments within USA Water Polo and
functions as team leader and head of delegation
on all international and domestic trips.
Jen earned her B.A. in economics from the Uni-
versity of California, Irvine, and recently completed
her MBA and MS in sports management at the
University of Massachusetts, Amherst. While at-
tending UMass, Jen had the opportunity to work on
projects with Octagon and Major League Baseball.
Prior to working for USA Water Polo, Jen was an
intern with the Los Angeles Galaxy and a sales
specialist at Recreational Equipment, Inc. Jen mar-
ried Justin Funakura in November 2011. Outside of
work, she enjoys the outdoors, photography, and
cheering on the Angels, Chargers, and LA Kings.
Larnie Boquiren,

Larnie Boquiren joined
USA Water Polo in October
2016 as the full-time
Athletic Trainer of USA
Womens Water Polo. With
USA Water Polo, Boquiren
is in charge of evaluating
and assessing injuries,
design and implementa-
tion of treatment and rehabilitation plans, and
providing injury prevention and recovery methods
to the U.S. Womens National Team players. As
a traveling member of the staff, her daily duties
include pre-practice treatments, monitor practice,
rehabilitation, post-practice treatments, and
providing recovery treatments.
Prior to USA Water Polo, Boquiren served as
the Head Athletic Trainer at the Crossroads School
(Santa Monica, CA) where she worked with the
schools middle school and high school athletic
programs from August 2008 until October 2015.
She also served as a seasonal assistant athletic
trainer for USA Volleyball for 5 seasons.
She earned her undergraduate degree in Kine-
siology with an emphasis in athletic training from
Cal State Fullerton in 2004. She completed her
masters degree in Sports Health Care from Arizona
School of Health Sciences, A.T. Still University.
Following graduate school, Boquiren completed
a fellowship program with the New Hampshire
Musculoskeletal Institute.
Boquiren has advance training in manual thera-
py techniques and orthopedic assessment.

INTRODUCTION TO WATER POLO
BY DEFINITION
No other team sport combines as many
diverse physical and tactical elements
as water polooften described as a
combination of swimming, soccer, basketball,
hockey, rugby, and wrestling. The game is
fast paced and vigorous, requiring its players
to be strong, quick, and extremely accurate.
WATER POLO HISTORY
During the mid 1800s, as swimming became
a popular recreation in England, several water
sports emerged, bridging the gap between
land and water sports. Among them were
water football, water rugby, water handball,
and water polo.
As the game developed and European rules
were adopted, the sport quickly spread to
several countries by 1900, including Hungary,
Austria, Germany, France, and Belgium.
Water polo had its official start in the USA
in 1888. By 1900, water polo had become
so popular that it earned the distinction of
becoming the first team sport added to the
Olympic program.
THE GAME
A team consists of six field players and
one goalkeeper. The object of the game is
similar to that of soccer to score as many
goals as possible by throwing the ball
into the teams goal net while preventing the
opposition from doing so at the other end of
the pool.

it toward its offensive end of the pool by
swimming, dribbling, or passing the ball.
FOULS
There are three types of fouls in water polo.
Ordinary fouls account for approximately
80% of the whistles during the game and
personal fouls (exclusion and penalty fouls)
the remainder. Ordinary fouls include:
touching the ball with two hands; taking the
ball under water when tackled; impeding an
opponent in possession of the ball who is not
holding the ball; pushing off of an opponent;
and, stalling (failing to advance the ball into
a better scoring opportunity). Major fouls
include exclusion and penalty fouls. Exclusion
fouls include: kicking or striking; deliberate
splashing in the face; an ordinary foul
committed by the defense; interfering with a
free throw; misconduct or disrespect to the
referee; holding, sinking, or pulling back an
opponent not holding the ball. A player who
receives three major foul is excluded for the
remainder of the game with substitution.

TIME CLOCKS
As in basketball, two clocks are used to time
a water polo game. One indicates the time
remaining in the quarter, and the other, called
the possession (shot) clock, indicates how
much time remains for the offensive team to
shoot the ball.

STARTING
Each quarter is started with the teams
lined up on opposite goal lines. On a signal

Understanding Water Polo
Water polo can be a confusing game
for spectators. The whistle is constantly
blowing and the play never stops, even
when someone is excluded. In addition,
there are several misconceptions about
the game, including how the players keep
their horses swimming. Well hang in there,
because the following information should
help to make the picture much clearer.
The standard course for an international
water polo match is generally 30x20 meters
for men and 25x20 meters for women but can
vary depending on the competition and rules
decided for a specific event. The pool should
be all deep, with championship games played
in a minimum depth of two meters. Goals are
positioned at each end of the course.
Each team has seven players. Six are
field players and one goalkeeper, who
guards a 0.9 meter high by 3 meter wide
(approximately three feet by 10 feet) goal at
the end of the field of play.
The object of the game is to throw a
ball into the opponents goal and prevent
members of the opposing team from scoring
on your goal.
The ball is advanced by throwing it or
swimming with it. The major restrictions are that
a player cannot touch the ball with both hands
at the same time (the goalkeeper is an exception
to this rule) or strike the ball with a closed fist.
Each contest consists of four eight-
minute quarters. The offensive team has 30
seconds of actual playing time to take a shot
at the goal, or else it loses possession of
the ball.
Possession (shot) clocks indicate the
number of seconds remaining before a team
can lose possession.
The TWO-METER LINE, visible on each
side of the pool, delineates the distance from
the goal. The offensive team may not pass
this line unless preceded by or accompanied
by the ball.
The FIVE-METER LINE is a second mark
visible along the side of the pool. Should
an offensive player who has possession
of the ball and is moving toward the goal
be fouled inside this line, he/she may be
awarded a penalty shot from the five-meter

line. A penalty shot is awarded by the referee.
The offensive player faces the goalkeeper
across five meters of water. When the whistle
sounds and the referee makes a hand signal,
the player takes a shot at the goal.
The FIVE-METER LINE also marks a
point when fouls are committed beyond five
meters, the player fouled may either take a
free throw or a direct shot on goal if taken
immediately, without faking.
The CENTER LINE mark indicates the
center of the field of play. To start each
quarter, the ball is placed on the center line
and the teams race from their respective goal
lines for possession.
After a goal, the teams line up on the
center line, each in their respective sides, to
restart play.
ORDINARY FOULS ARE ASSESSED FOR:
impeding the progress of an opponent in
possession of the ball who is not holding
the ball
pushing off an opponent
Possession FOULS ARE ASSESSED FOR:
touching the ball with two hands (field
players outside of five meters)
taking the ball under water when tackled
failing to shoot at the goal within 30
seconds of gaining possession or failure to
advance the ball (also called stalling)
FOULS play an important part in the
strategy of water polo. Much of a teams
effort will often go into inducing its opponents
to commit fouls. There are three kinds of
fouls: ordinary, exclusion, and penalty.
For ordinary fouls, the opposing team
receives the ball at the point of the foul or at
the spot of the ball or from the location of the
ball if it is further from the defending teams
goal. If the foul was committed inside the
two-meter line, the free throw must be taken
from the two-meter line. The player taking the
free throw has approximately three seconds
to put the ball into play. If the ball is not put in
play within three seconds, the team may be
charged with delay of game and the opposing
team may be awarded the ball.
Understanding Water Polo
EXCLUSION FOULS ARE ASSESSED FOR:
interfering with a free throw
impeding or pushing off of an opponent
before a free throw, goal throw, corner
throw, or penalty throw is taken
committing an act of misconduct by
using foul language or violent or persistent
foul play that is unacceptable within the
spirit of the rules and that is likely to bring
the game into disrepute
intentionally splashing an opponent
refusing obedience or showing
disrespect to an official or referee
holding, sinking, or pulling back an
opponent not holding the ball
committing an overly aggressive
ordinary foul
committing an act of brutality, such as
intentional kicking or striking an opponent
or making disproportionate movements
with that intent
An exclusion foul is punished by the
award of a free throw to the opposing
team and the exclusion of the player who
committed the foul. The excluded player
must move to the re-entry area, located out
of bounds nearest to the players own goal
line (near the team bench side of the pool),
without leaving the pool or interfering with
play. The excluded player, or a substitution,
shall be permitted to return after 20 seconds
of actual playing time, from the time of the
foul, after a goal has been scored, or after a
change of possession, whichever is shortest.
A player is removed for the remainder of the
game with substitution after committing three
exclusion fouls.
An act of brutality is defined as kicking
or striking or attempting to strike or kick an
opponent or official with malicious intent.
The offending player is removed from the
remainder of the game (with substitution
after four minutes), leaving the team of the
offending player with one less player than the
opponent (for those four minutes).
An exclusion leaves one team short-
handed, seven players to six. Many goals are
scored during exclusions. The game strategy
of most teams is to induce the defensive
team to commit exclusion fouls. Rather than
taking shots on the goal, some teams will
patiently work for an exclusion, so as to
be able to attack the goal with a one-man
advantage. When that happens, most teams
will go into a zone defense, whereby each
player covers a pre-assigned section of water
rather than a particular offensive player.
A penalty foul is punished by awarding a
penalty throw to the offended team. A penalty
throw is a direct shot at the goal and shall be
taken by any player of the team to which it
is awarded, except the goalkeeper, from any
point on the opponents five-meter line. Much
of the action in front of the goal consists of
the offensive team passing the ball to the
center forward, who plays a position between
the two goal posts and the opponents two
and five-meter lines. The object is to draw
exclusion fouls that will give the offensive
team a six-on-five advantage. Most goals in
water polo are scored in this situation.
PENALTY FOULS ARE ASSESSED FOR:
a defending player committing any foul
within the five-meter area but for which a
goal would probably have resulted
a defending player committing an act of
brutality within the five-meter area
an excluded player intentionally
interfering with play
an excluded player or a substitute
reentering improperly during the last
minute of the game
the coach of the team not in possession
of the ball requesting a time out
A counterattack occurs when a team
receives the ball and sprints down the pool
at top speed, hoping to score before the
defenders can get organized and set up their
front court defense. Counterattacks also tend
to produce exclusion fouls.
When facing an advantage or a scoring
threat, many defenders will simply pull back
the offensive player by the legs or swimsuit.
Goals are scored when the ball
completely passes between the front of the
goal posts. It need not slam into the back
of the net, although the usual shot sails into
the goal at tremendous speeds, sometimes
exceeding 60 mph.

 GLOSSARY OF TERMS
ADVANTAGE RULE:
A rule permitting the referee to refrain from
declaring a foul if, in his/her judgment, such
a declaration would give the advantage to the
defending team.
Center:
The area in front of the goal between the two-
and four-meter lines. Thus the center forward
who plays in this position is generally called
the center. The defender is called the guard.
Counterattack:
A term used to describe fast-break transition
play. Generally its used to set up a half-court
offense or exploit a man advantage over the
opponents defense for a highpercentage
shot.
Corner throw:
A corner throw is awarded to the offense
when a defending goalkeeper is the last to
touch the ball before it goes out of bounds at
either end of the pool. The offensive player
puts the ball into play at the two-meter mark
on the side nearest to where the ball went
out.
Dribble:
The method a player uses to swim with the
ball.
Driver /Attacker:
A player who normally tries to get away
from his defender in the front court by
quick, explosive swimming. Drivers are field
players who specialize in driving skills and
fast shooting techniques. Drivers must be
extremely quick swimmers and have above
average hand-eye coordination. They also
are responsible for considerable defensive
pressure.
Dry pass:
A pass made from one player to another
where the ball is caught without touching the
water.
Egg beater:
The alternating leg kick that enables players
to lift themselves vertically out of the water.
Exclusion (Ejection):
A foul that results with an offending player
being excluded from the game for 20
seconds.

Free throw:
When a player is fouled by a defender, he/she
receives a free throw. This is a pass that the
defender may not block or interfere with in
any manner. The player receiving a free throw
must put the ball in play, either by passing to
a teammate, dribbling the ball, or tossing it in
the air to himself/herself.
Front court :
The area of the pool in front of the goal.
Game clock:
The clock that displays the time remaining in
the period.
Goalkeeper (goalie):
A player whose primary responsibility is to
defend the goal. He/she may use two hands
inside five-meters to defend against shots by
the opposing team.
Impeding:
It is an ordinary foul to push, push off from,
or hamper the free limb movement of, or to
impede in any way, an opponent who hasnt
gained an offensive advantage and who isnt
holding the ball.
Inside water:
An offensive advantage that exists when an
offensive player is positioned between the
goal he/she is attacking and the defender. A
penalty foul should be called if the offensive
player is held, sunk, or pulled back when
he/she is in control of the ball and is on or
inside the five-meter line. It is a major foul if
the offensive player is held, sunk or pulled
back when he/she has inside water outside
the five-meter line whether in control of the
ball or not.
Lob shot:
A deceptive, high-arching shot intended to
pass over the goalies hands and under the
crossbar.
Man-down (also Player-down):
The time of play in which a defending team
has one player fewer, normally due to an
exclusion.
Man-up (also Player-up):
The time of play in which the offensive team
has a player advantage, most often a six-on-
five situation following a defensive players
exclusion (also called 6 on 5)
 GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Neutral throw:
A jump ball awarded by the referee. Neutral
throws generally occur when two players
commit a foul at the same time. The referee
will award a neutral throw by requiring two
players from opposing teams to face each
other, at which point he/she blows the whistle
and throws the ball into the air between them.
Personal foul :
A foul that results in exclusion and/or a
penalty shot. Any player committing three
personal fouls is excluded from the remainder
of the game.
Penalty shot:
A shot awarded to the offense when a
defender commits a major foul within five
meters of his/her own goal. Any offensive
field player in the pool may take a free shot at
the goal when the referee blows the whistle.
The selected player may shoot from no closer
than five meters and may NOT fake or delay.
The defending goalkeeper may not move
to block the shot until the referee blows the
whistle.
Pick:
Much like basketball the method an
offensive player uses to free himself/herself
momentarily from his/her defender. This
is accomplished by swimming so close to
another offensive player that the defender
swims into the offensive teammate by
mistake, allowing the attacking player to be
open for an instant.
Possession (shot) clock:
The clock that displays the time of
possession in which a team must take a shot
(also called shot clock or 30-second clock).
Press:
A type of defense in which everyone is
covered tightly.
Red:
The period of time immediately prior to the
expiration of the shot/possession clock or
game clock. Some teams yell RED when
either of these clocks indicates 10 seconds
or less.
Re-entry area (penalTy area):
The location of the pool behind each goal line,
where a penalized player must await re-entry
after an exclusion.
Skip shot:
A shot designed to skip off the water into the
goal. Because of water turbulence, the angle
of the shot is somewhat unpredictable and
difficult to stop by the goalkeeper.
Slough (also Drop):
The action taken by a defender when he/she
moves away from his/her opponent to help
defend in another area.
Sprint:
The manner in which a water polo game
begins each quarter. Each team lines up at
the end line or at the two-meter line to start.
When the referee blows his whistle, the two
players closest to the referee sprint toward
the ball, which is dropped on the halfway
line. When possible, the ball will be placed in
a pull-start ring at the center of the pool, for
two players to sprint toward.
Strong side:
The side of the pool in which the ball is
located.
Tackling:
Holding, sinking, grabbing, or pulling back a
player who is holding the ball is not a foul
as long as it is NOT done in a manner likely
to injure the offensive player. The focus of the
defender must be the ball.
Two-meter player:
A name given to the player is located on
or about the two meter line in front of the
opposing teams goal. This individual is also
called a center or center forward.
Weak side:
The side of the pool opposite of where the
ball is located.
Wet pass:
A pass from one player to another that lands
on the water, within the reach of the receiving
player.
Wet shot:
A shot that originates with the ball on the
water.
Zone defense:
A type of defense in which players are
assigned an area to defend. Defensive players
must assume responsibility for covering any
offensive player entering that particular zone
or area.
