Reflections

Competency 1: The principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the development,

articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by

the school community.

For nine years, I have been a member of the leadership committee on my campus as well as apart of the

Site Based Committee. We have revised the mission and vision of the school to match with the culture

of the school. The schools academic success and attendance success is important to the growth of the

school. By implementing a mission and vison of the school that identifies with the culture of the school

changes should come. In order to achieve this community involvement is important, because different

perspectives and worldviews are considered. Once there is a since of ownership with the student,

communities and schools changes should occur.

Competency 2: The principal knows how to communicate and collaborate with all members of the

school community, respond to diverse interests and needs, and mobilize resources to promote student

success.

There is a strong need for there to be communication with the principal, teachers, parents, community

and students. Communication is the key that opens all doors of unanswered questions and any issues

that may occur with the needs of school could be discussed. I was able to be a part of the site-based

committee at school, and in this meeting different things were discussed and collaborations were made

to address the needs of this students. I found that meeting in this nature are essential and should be done

more often.

Competency 3: The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical and legal

manner.

This is a competency that I have skill in, however, I make sure that whatever decisions in which I

make as an individual are always in the best interest of the school. I make decisions with integrity, I

am fair, and I display ethical behavior. The only issue that I have is that I do everything in a legal

matter that I have knowledge of, however legal things I am not experienced in and I need to gain more

knowledge in the legal aspect.

Competency 4: The principal knows how to facilitate the design and implementation of curricula and

strategic plans that enhance teaching and learning; ensure alignment of curriculum, instruction,

resources, and assessment; and promote the use of varied assessments to measure student performance.

Being able to shadow when my principals were performing walk through I was able to see the importance

of the implementation of curriculum in the classroom. Since there are different types of learners

classroom instruction as well as resources offered, need to be altered to fit the design of the learner. Data is

analyzed when students take district test, EOC and STAAR exams to define areas of growth and areas that

we need to work on. When this is done, teachers need to make sure that the curriculum that is being taught

is aligned to meet the deficient areas. I have found that sticking to a time line is not always beneficial. Yes

we want to see that students pass these test, but most importantly we want to see growth, and that may

mean sometimes that there has to be re-teaching involved.

Competency 5: The principal knows how to advocate, nurture, and sustain an instructional program

and a campus culture that are conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.

During staff development and teacher training, there were many classes on what as a school needs to be

done in order to get the students on track. Coming from a title I school that has not done very well on

the STAAR exam there is a need to ensure that there is advocating, nurturing, and sustaining an

instructional program for the campus culture.

Competency 6: The principal knows how to implement a staff evaluation and development system to

improve the performance of all staff members, select and implement appropriate models for supervision

and staff development, and apply the legal requirements for personnel management.

After completing the walk throughs and classroom observation, teachers were able to review

information and then they had a time designated to come in and talk to the evaluator about the

evaluation. This was a good idea, because many times people do not know that they have done wrong

unless the information is relayed to them in a constructive manner. During this time teachers were able

to ask question and obtain advise

Competency 7: The principal knows how to apply organizational, decision-making, and problem-

solving skills to ensure an effective learning environment.

This is an important aspect of being a principal, due to the fact that there will be issues. When decisions

are made, not that they necessarily have to be discussed with the staff, but informing them of the

decision making process and why the decision was made, will give them a better insight on the why.

This is important.

Competency 8: The principal knows how to apply principles of effective leadership and management

in relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial management, and technology

use.

This course was a very challenging course for me. Competency 008 has been my weakest area of

concern. The principal knows how to apply principles of effective leadership and management in

relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial management, and technology

use. This is the area of being a principal that no one wants to deal with especially the financial

management

ensuring that laws and policies are met when making a sound financial management decision in relation

to accounts and purchasing is something that I have never considered. When dealing with my own

finances, I make the money, and buy what I want, however when dealing with school finances other

consideration have to be taking under consideration. This is an area that I feel as if I need to review

more and sit in with my administrators and follow the process, since I am more hands on.

Competency 9: The principal knows how to apply principles of leadership and management to the

campus physical plant and support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning environment.

Being a woman your first natural instinct is to make sure that the environment for you young are safe

and secure. This was a Competency that I feel very comfortable in. Competency 009 is the principal

knowing how to apply principles of leadership and management to the campus physical plant and

support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning environment. However one area that I did not

consider was how to apply local, state, and federal laws and policies to support sound decision making

related to school programs and operations (e.g., student services, food services, health services,

transportation). There are many things to consider when being a principal; I feel things that people

sometimes do not take time to consider. This was an eye opener for me, and regardless of what

direction I choose to take in my life with my degree, I personally have a different opinion of what a

principal has to deal with on top of every student that enters into the doors of the school.
