Student teacher, you are responsible for uploading a copy of this observation to TaskStream and
Blackboard. Your CE should complete at least 2 observations during the student teaching experience.
1. Did the lesson unfold in the way the student teacher had planned? Please explain.
Yes, the lesson went as planned. Ms. Grubb did an Oregon Trail Stimulation with students. This
was an activity that involved students working together with different roles as they moved across
the Oregon Trail. Ms. Grubb assigned students different roles: doctors, cooks, trail guide, wagon
master. This activity involved students working together to have critical discussions about
situations occurring during this time period and required students to provide reasoning behind
their actions. All students were actively engaged in the activity.
She incorporated the use of the Pod App for students to roll their dice. Ms. Grubb was able to
see what each group rolled.
Ms. Grubb presented different scenarios of situations that might occur on the Oregon Trail. One
member of your wagon got dysentery. However, since the wagon had a medicine kit, the group
was able to make the member feel better. She did a wonderful job of providing students with
different scenarios that travelers of the Oregon Trail would experience during this time period.
2. Were the learning targets clear for the lesson? Did the students gain a true understanding of
the learning targets?
Yes, Ms. Grubb introduced the lesson by starting with the learning target and by reviewing the
learning target at the end of the lesson.
Learning Target: I will learn about the different types of Westward Expansion and how they
impacted the growth of the United States.
Ms. Grubb asks students if they researched anything last night about Manifest Destiny.
Students shared responses.
Students hooked students by watching an educational rap about Manifest Destiny. Ms. Grubb
explains to students about the inevitable Destiny-U.S. was destined to spread across North
American continent; people believed that it was what God wanted them to do.
It was an idea.another cause of why we moved west.
3. Were the students engaged throughout the lesson? What suggestions do you have for the
student teacher in terms of student engagement?
Students are using dice to roll and to move along the Oregon Trail. Ms. Grubb is using the game
as part of her classroom management (students will loose food which helps them to survive on
the Oregon Trail). Students are actively involved learning what it was really like during the
Oregon Trail. They are experiencing obstacles such death of animals, people, loosing supplies
in the river, wagon breaking, etc. Students had discussion about how to overcome these
obstacles.
No, she provided students with the expectations of their behavior before the game. Students
were reminded that they would lose points throughout the game if they were off task/not falling
directions.
Students are expected to raise his/her hand and wait to be called on.One student yelled out
and she quickly reminded him about her expectations of him raising his hand and waiting to be
called on.
5. If the student teacher taught this lesson again to your students, what changes would you like
to see?
Not reallly any changes, she did a great job teaching the content, cooperative learning and
providing students with the background knowledge needed to understand this time period. She
also did a great job of explaining what level 4 vs. level 3 responses would be on the final social
studies test.
6. What are some overall steps the student teacher should take in order to further strengthen
his/her meaningful facilitation of content delivery?
Assess student understanding with an exit ticket in order to determine what information they
gathered from the lesson. Maybe a writing assignment?
Student Teacher, Please upload a final copy of your observation to the appropriate dropbox on
Blackboard.
