The Waray inhabit the islands of Samar and Biliran, and the eastern

section of Leyte in Eastern

Visaya Region. The Waray language belongs to the Visayas language family and is
related to Cebuano, Hiligaynon, and Masbateno. The Waray speaking people of
Leyte(Leytenos) and Samar (Samarenos) are strong and proud group. One of their
most distinctive handicraft are products made of BURI plant.

Buri is a local name of this plant and known as centennial plant by many
rural people.

Buri palm has many domestic and industrial economic uses, making it
well-known in local and

International narket. It is second to coconut and comparable to tikog and nipa in


terms of economic and industrial importance.

Buri weaving has been a traditional industry in the Samar, next to tikog
weaving.

From the unopened leaf is obtained a very fine fiber which is utilized in
making products like hats which used by the farners and fishermen and also used
for folk dances and festivals as props, mats, bags, strings, baskets, shoes, slippers,
coin purses, pen holders, window blinds, attach cases, table accessories, wall
papers, desk organizers, screen divider,decorative pillows, lampshades,placemats,
folders,holiday decors, gift ware, hula sticks and other fancy articles. Buris mature
leaf is used for covering tobacco bales, rarely as a thatch for houses, while the ribs
are used for making brooms.These are common in Oquendo and Tinambacan
districts of the Cityof Calbayog and even in the farthest barangays of the said city.

Through Buri weaving, the learners will appreciate the creativity shown
by the weaving of buri and takes pride in ones native products. He/ She will
develops awareness on various uses of locally grown plants as a source of livelihood
and enable to show his own creativity in making buri weaving projects
