iMBAProgramOverview
TheiMBAdegreeisthefirstMBAdesignedasastackabledegreewithblocksofbusiness
knowhowthatyoucanstacktogether,deliveredinaflexible,onlineformat.Wecallthose
blocksSpecializations.

iMBADegreeRequirementsandLearningPlatforms

StudentsadmittedtotheiMBAdegreeprogrammustcompletesixSpecializations,two
Specializationcapstoneprojectsoftheirchoice,andaprogramwidecapstoneproject
basedinexperientiallearning.FourSpecializationsareCOREtotheiMBAdegreeprogram.
StudentscanchoosetwoadditionalSpecializationsfromseveralfocalareas.Thisprovides
awithflexibleandstackabledegreeprogram.
ASpecializationisacollectionofcoursesorganizedaroundaparticulardiscipline
(i.e.,finance,leadership,etc.).EachSpecializationiscompletedontwoplatforms:
o TheCourseralearningplatform,forselfdirectedlearning
o TheIllinoislearningplatform,forvirtualclasssessionsandcontentspecificto
youriMBAcohort

EachofthesixSpecializationsendswithacapstoneproject(experientiallearning).

TwooutofsixhighengagementcapstonesarerequiredforiMBAstudents,
availablethroughtheIllinoislearningplatformandoccurringduringthetwoweek
intervalbetweenSpecializations.
CapstonesontheCourseraplatformareoptional.
TheprogramcapstonebeginsneartheendofthethirdsetofSpecializationsand
extendsfourweeksbeyondthecompletionofthelastcourse.Itisofferedthrough
theIllinoisplatform.
Tosummarize,everyiMBAcoursehastwoparts:PartAandPartB.PartAisinthe
Courseraplatform.PartAhasallthecoursecontent:videolectures,readings,andbasic
quizquestions.PartBisintheIllinoisplatformwherestudentsinteractlivewithfacultyin
virtualclasssessionsandhavegroupinteractions,additionalassignments,and/orexams.
InordertoearnacademiccreditforaniMBAcourse,studentsmustcompletebothPartsA
andB.PartAisaselfdirectedlearningenvironmentwherestudentscancompletethe
modulesattheirownpacewithinthetimeallotted.PartBissessionbased.Refertothe

Expectations
ExpectationswithintheiMBAProgramareestablishedforboththeprogramandfor
students.

Asaprogram,itisexpectedthatweconstantlyevolve.Theprogramexpectsto
continuouslyworktowardimprovingthestudentexperience,andtostriveforconsistency

ofBusiness,andtheiMBAProgram.AdditionalexpectationsofstudentsintheiMBA

Striveforthehighestacademicstandards
Asstudentsofatopresearchuniversity,youareexpectedandrequiredtomaintainthe
higheststandardsofacademicintegrityandtoactivelyparticipateincreatingthistypeof
learningenvironment.ConsistentwithUniversitypolicy,cheatingisconsideredavery
seriousoffense.Cheatingisthecopyingofanswerstoproblemsetsandexamsfromother
studentsorothersources,ratherthanauthoringthem.Anyonecaughtcheatinginthis
programorinacoursewillbesubjecttothepenaltiesdiscussedinthepoliciessection
(AcademicIntegrity.Thesepenaltiesinclude,amongothers,failureofthecourseor
dismissalfromtheUniversity.

Evaluationmethodsandteachingstyles
Expectcoursestohavesomewhatdifferentevaluationmethodsandrequirementsandfor
professorstohavedifferentteachingstyles.Mostcourseswillhaveteamorgroupbased
work(thatinvolvescoordinationandindividualwork(includingtimedexams.

Emailandcommunication
Onceyouradmissionprocessiscomplete,alluniversitycommunicationwilloccurviayour
@illinois.eduemailaccount.Thisincludescourseinformation,communicationsfrom

instructorsandTAs,andinformationregardingyourstudentaccount.Expecttoreceive
twotothreeemailsaboutthecoursebeforeitbeginsfromtheinstructororthecourse
systemorsupportteams.Donotignorethosemessages,butorganizetheminto
appropriatesubfolders.Theyhaveimportantinformationpertainingcommunication,
accesstothecourse,andcoursepoliciesthatyoumayneedtoreadagaininthefirstfew
weeks.Expecttoreceiveremindersofupcomingdeadlinesandanyincompleteormissing
submissions.

Coursesyllabusanddeadlines
Readandknowthecoursesyllabusandnotealldeadlines,assignments,andexam
requirementsatthestartofthecourseandorganizeyourselfaroundtheworkloadsand
thetimeline.Donotrelyonconstantreminders.Expecttobeheldaccountablefor
meetingallcoursedeadlines,asthesearestatedupfrontandreinforcedthroughoutthe
course.Pleaseattempttomakeeveryefforttoinformfacultyaheadoftimewhenyour
timelysubmissionofassignmentsmaybecomeanissue.TheiMBAprogramhasstrict
rulesarounddeadlinesandsubmissions.Latesubmissionswillnotbeacceptedandany
exceptionswillbeatthesolediscretionofthefaculty.

Studentsareadvisedtohavesecureinternetconnectionsandbackupplansforsingle
sittingexams.Studentswhoexperienceaseriousextenuatingcircumstancebeyondtheir
controlthatpreventssubmissionofanassignmentorexammayrequestanexceptionto
thispolicybyprovidingdocumentationoftheextenuatingcircumstancetotheAssistant
DirectorintheiMBAprogram.TheiMBAprogramwillevaluatetherequestandadvisethe
instructorastowhethermakeupworkwillbeallowed.Whenatallpossible,requestsfor
anexceptionshouldbemadeBEFOREtheassignmentdeadline.Latesubmissionscannot
beacceptedforanyreasononcetheanswerkeyisposted.

Grading
Theassignmentworkloaddistributionisapproximately7030betweenhighengagement
andselfdirectedportions,althoughtheexactdistributionisatthediscretionof
instructorsgivendifferencesacrosscourses.Theselfdirectedportionisgradedpassfail.
Requirementstoearnapassinggradearespecifiedinthesyllabiforspecificcourses.A
passinggradefortheselfdirectedportionoftheclassisrequiredandnecessaryinorder
toearnalettergradeintheentirecourse.Thehighengagementportionofthecoursewill
begradedonapointssystem.Thefinalgradeforthecoursewillbedeterminedbythe
numberofpointsearnedforthehighengagementportionoftheclass.Failingtheself
directedportionwillresultinafinalgradeofFforthecourse,regardlessofthenumber
ofpointsearnedinthehighengagementportion.Procedurestotranslatepointstoletter
gradesareatthediscretionoffaculty.

Familiaritywithplatforms
Expecttointeractinmultiplelearningplatformsasyoutakethecourse.Mostcourse
content,recordedlectures,andreadingswillbeintheCourseraplatform.Any
followupweeklyactivitiesintheIllinoisplatformwillrelyonyourhavingconsumed
therespectiveweeklycontentintheCourseraplatform.Contentandactivitieswillbe
presentinboththeCourseraandIllinoisCompassplatforms,andwillincorporatelive
interactiontoolsaswell.KeepupwiththeworkonCourseraandIllinoisCompass.
Donotprocrastinateonsubmittingassignments.

IntheCompassplatform,itisimportantthatyoucompletetheCourseOrientation
LearningModule.Thiswillprovideagoodoverviewofthecoursecontent,required
elements,andexpectationsofthecourse.

Liveinteractionsessions(Yourvirtualclassroom)
Expectallprofessorstostronglyencourageorrequireattendanceandactive

Groupformationandpeerevaluation
GroupsmaybeformedforallcoursesintheiMBAprogram,takingavarietyoffactorsinto
consideration.Peerevaluationsinacommonformatwillbeemployedforallcourses.
AdministrationofpeerevaluationsmaybedonebytheiMBAprogramonceforeach
courseatitsconclusion.Facultyhavethediscretiontodecidewhetherandhowtouse
peerevaluationsintheircourses.Yourfinalgradeinthecoursewillincorporateyourpeer
