CALCULUS (SMT 1123)

HOW MANY STEPS DO YOU WALK EACH

DAY?
INTRODUCTION

For this assignment, we have to complete the task to find a piecewise-define

function that will fit one of the following real life applications. We are given 3 choices and I
choose task number two which is how many steps do you walk each day
(morning/afternoon/evening). So, to make the task easier, we have been provided with a
pedometer to calculate the steps. The time range is within 24 hours. The pedometer also can
be use to give the reading for the walking distance in kilometre and the amount of calories
burned (kcal) since we need to have 3 different rates. The walking steps have been calculated
using pedometer. This is the table of the data which has been recorded in 24 hours:

Time interval Steps Distance (km) Calories (kcal)

7am - 1pm 1986 0.64 87.4
1pm - 7pm 5012 1.67 220.57
7pm - 1am 5428 1.81 238.88
1am - 7am 5479 1.83 241.13

DISCUSSION

As a student, it is not just learning the theory of this Calculus subject but we should
know the benefits of the application of mathematical function and how to apply it in real life.
So by doing this assignment, I can relate and see the function of this piecewise-define.

I started collecting the data early in the morning at 7 am. The time interval is 7 am
to 1 pm so I managed to record 1986 steps which is 0.64 kilometres. I burned 87.4
kilocalories during that 6 hours. The amount of steps is not really high because I do not have
class from 7 am till 1 pm. At 1 pm till 7 pm, 5012 steps were recorded as the second data. The
steps has increased steeply because during that time interval, I have classes and have to walk
from one class to the next class. I also played netball in the evening and this activity requires
me to walk and run a lot. The distance travelled is 1.67 kilometres and 220.57 kilocalories
have burnt. This is such a huge achievement because it is about 3026 steps difference
between first data and second data.

For the third data which is the next 6 hours, the reading increases to 5428 with the
distance travelled is 1.81 kilometres and also 238.88 kilocalories burnt in my body. From 1
am to 7 am, the graph is going down as I only walk about only 51 steps which comes to the
total of 5479 steps. The steps difference is too small as I only move a little before I hit the
sack. To compare between third and fourth data, there was only a slight increase of the
walking steps because the data was recorded during my bed time.

Lastly, the second graph just showed the relationship between steps, distance
travelled and calories burnt. A few functions that make up the graph also were included in the
graph. However, I did not reached the 10000 steps which was suggested by the Health
Ministry in order to lead a better and healthy lifestyle. So after this, I will try and make sure i
achieve the 10000 steps in order to have a healthy body.
