Course Information
NURS 3611-001: Medical-Surgical Nursing I
Number of Credits: 6 credit hours (3 class/ 3 clinical = 115 hours)
Time/Location Course Meets: Didactic lectures on Mondays 9:00 - 11:00 am and Fridays
9:00 - 11:00 in Braithwaite Building: Room 225.
Clinical Hours: Every Thursdays 7:00 am - 7:00 pm (12-hour clinical
day to meet weekly, specific start and end dates
TBA. Students will have to arrive at clinical site by 6:45
am).

Description of the Course
This course put emphasis on the holistic environment of the adult client, their family members,
and the clinical application of the nursing process to aid in achieving optimal wellness; when
providing care for medical-surgical clients with various health condition, in acute-care settings.
Course Perquisites: Successful completion of prior core courses and all level I nursing courses
with a C or above. Students must obtain a grade of "C" or higher in the lecture section, and a
PASS/FAIL grade in the clinical lab to successfully pass the course.

Course & Clinical Objectives: Upon completion of the Medical-Surgical Nursing I, students
will be able to:
1. Identify resources that can be beneficial and provide services for adult patients.
2. Apply the nursing process to clients/patients experiencing acute and/or chronic illness.
3. Assess the physiological, psychosocial, developmental, cultural, and spiritual
components of the older adults.
4. Implement patient and family-centered care that pertains to palliative care issues and
resolution of end-of-life care.
5. Analyze demographic trends relating to older adults, as well as the impact on health care.
6. Demonstrate critical thinking skills and ethical decision making in caring for adult
patients with alterations in their health.
7. Discuss evidence-based nursing interventions that pertains specifically to adults health.
8. Collaborate with patients and other interdisciplinary health professionals in the care of
adult patients.
9. Advocate for quality and safe patient care as an interprofessional team member.
10. Demonstrate professional standards of ethical, moral, and legal conduct/behavior.
11. Assessment of each patient body system to obtain an accurate database.
12. Analyze and evaluate nursing diagnoses for adult patients in the clinical settings.

Class Expectations:
1. Be prepared for class at all times. Read course materials and complete all assignments
prior to class.

2. Attendance is required in all sections (i.e. lecture, lab, and clinical),of this course. Please
refer to attendance policy in UT Tyler student handbook.

Health History Assignments (a total of two; each will be worth 5%) = 10%

A. 90 - 100%
B. 80 - 89%
C. 70 - 79%
D. 60 -69%
F. Below 60%
Clinical Component will be graded as: P= PASS or F = FAIL

State Mandated Course Drop Policy

By state law, all student registering and/or who starts at any Texas public college or
university for the first time in Fall 2007 or after that will be limited to of six drop course
withdrawals during their academic career. Exception to this six drop rule can be found in the
university's catalog; if you have any questions and/or concerns, please contact Enrollment
Services Center.

All class assignments and/or paperwork must be submitted by midnight on due date(s);
late assignments or paperwork may be penalized by 5 points (each day it is a late; unless the
student contact/inform the instructor for an extension), reduction in number grade.

Student Academic Workload Policy


Students are expected to accomplish multiple assignments, read all chapters, and/or assigned
readings, come to class fully prepared and be ready to engage in topic discussions, as well as
being attentive and participating in class. Attending stimulation labs is mandatory, as it is
required to be successful in this course.
