N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Ashley Alexander Date of Activity: 2/18, 2/20 & 4/2 Faculty name: Darlene

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with

(be specific about the purpose and your role):

Mass Casualty Training: The purpose of this activity was to raise awareness about how the public

health services and the community collaborate to plan for disasters. My role was a student and I

participated in an interactive activity to showcase the difficulties of dividing resources among the

communities in an area to provide the necessities to everyone.

Beta Mu Career Fair: The purpose of this activity was to promote different specialties in the field

of nursing. There were many different specialties there including pediatrics, the ED, clinical

nurse specialists, nurse practitioners and the intensive care unit among others. My role was that

of a potential employee looking at the respective careers and asking questions to gauge my

interest in the specialty.

Z Mansion: The purpose of this activity was to provide care for the homeless population. My role

was that of a nursing student where I took blood pressures, temperatures, pulse and oxygenation

while assessing the patient and directing them to the medical care area.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

Mass Casualty Training: This was held at the downtown Tucson Fire Department. The program

length was four hours.

Beta Mu Career Fair: This was held in the College of Nursing room 117. The program length

was one hour.

Z Mansion: This was held at Z Mansion. The program length was three hours.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

Mass Casualty Training: This experience was very valuable to me because I did not know

anything about planning for disasters. The interactive game providing information about

allocating resources was very helpful to my education.

Beta Mu Career Fair: This experience was valuable to me because I was able to talk to potential

employers about what they look for in candidates as well as about their specific specialties. It

was a great experience before I start applying for jobs!

Z Mansion: This experience was valuable to me because it introduced me to a community that I

have not had the chance to interact with yet. I was able to see how the homeless population gets

care and what type of care they typically need. I was also able to practice some of my nursing

skills and assess the homeless community as a whole.

Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why

or why not? (Describe)

I would recommend all three of these experiences. The mass casualty training really opened my

eyes to how much effort goes into planning for a disaster and how difficult it can be to manage

resources at that time. The career fair helped me determine what I was interested in and

introduced me to new specialties like the clinical nurse specialist. Finally, Z mansion introduced

me to the needs of the homeless population and increased my skills at doing vital signs.
