Mass Casualty Training: The purpose of this activity was to raise awareness about how the public
health services and the community collaborate to plan for disasters. My role was a student and I
participated in an interactive activity to showcase the difficulties of dividing resources among the
Beta Mu Career Fair: The purpose of this activity was to promote different specialties in the field
of nursing. There were many different specialties there including pediatrics, the ED, clinical
nurse specialists, nurse practitioners and the intensive care unit among others. My role was that
of a potential employee looking at the respective careers and asking questions to gauge my
Z Mansion: The purpose of this activity was to provide care for the homeless population. My role
was that of a nursing student where I took blood pressures, temperatures, pulse and oxygenation
while assessing the patient and directing them to the medical care area.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
Mass Casualty Training: This was held at the downtown Tucson Fire Department. The program
Beta Mu Career Fair: This was held in the College of Nursing room 117. The program length
Mass Casualty Training: This experience was very valuable to me because I did not know
anything about planning for disasters. The interactive game providing information about
Beta Mu Career Fair: This experience was valuable to me because I was able to talk to potential
employers about what they look for in candidates as well as about their specific specialties. It
have not had the chance to interact with yet. I was able to see how the homeless population gets
care and what type of care they typically need. I was also able to practice some of my nursing
Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why
I would recommend all three of these experiences. The mass casualty training really opened my
eyes to how much effort goes into planning for a disaster and how difficult it can be to manage
resources at that time. The career fair helped me determine what I was interested in and
introduced me to new specialties like the clinical nurse specialist. Finally, Z mansion introduced
me to the needs of the homeless population and increased my skills at doing vital signs.
