Airfoil Design Characteristics
We have chosen two NACA airfoil designs for this aircraft. These airfoils are performance
proven and highly common. They are found on other transport type aircraft that are utilized for
similar missions. Each airfoil has been tested in our wind tunnel simulation software and has
been proven capable of producing the proper lift, stall, and drag characteristics. Below is the data
obtained from our wind tunnel. There will be further explanations for each airfoil characteristic.
LIFT and Drag AT CRUISE
57 ft 9 in
With the airfoil surface area and camber detail, our airfoil produces adequate life for normal
cruise at about 180 KIAS. The angle of attack required keeps the aircraft at a normal pitch
attitude, allowing the pilots great visibility for traffic scanning.
The wind tunnel data also told us that in order to fulfill the stall speed required by your company,
we would have to add surface area to the common airfoil we chose. We did this by adding larger
fowler flaps to the aircraft that increase the coefficient of lift - thus we could fly slower at our
max gross weight for takeoff and landings from short fields.
Below is the mathematical proof that we needed to add and extra 37 square feet to our common
airfoil design. The top equation is for the original airfoil, the bottom equation is how we will
lower the stall speed.
