Subject: Art/Math

Grade: Kindergarten
Teacher: Miss Melissa Bain
School: CSN
LESSON ELEMENT
Common Core Learning Standards Addressed:
Modeling: sculpt a simple structure.
Create artwork related to historically and/or culturally appropriate units of study
based on a selected Enduring Idea.
Know number names and the count sequence.
Count to tell the number of objects.

Learning Targets:
Students will be able to count objects up to 20.
Students will be able to describe a cactus.
Students will be able to describe a desert.
Students will be able to mold a simple shape.
Students will be able to use a paintbrush.

Relevance/Rationale:
Students must know what a desert is and that we live in a desert. They should
also be able to point out a cactus. This is also a good activity for practicing counting.

Formative Assessment Criteria for Success:

The assessment of this assignment would be if the students structure looks
similar to a cactus and if they have 20 thorns in the cactus.

Activities/Tasks:
Teacher will ask students the following questions:
1. What do you know about a desert?
2. Is Las Vegas a desert?
3. What kinds of plants live in the desert?
4. What kinds of animals live in the desert?
Teacher will show students pictures of different cacti and ask students to
describe what they look like.
Each student will receive a small portion of green clay.
Students will mold the clay into a cactus based on the pictures shown.
Once completed with the molding, students will then count out 20 pieces of
uncooked spaghetti.
Students will stick each of the 20 pieces of uncooked spaghetti as the thorns.
If students seem to be struggling, teacher can count out pieces of spaghetti with the
class.
When completed, each student will receive a paper plate with a little brown
paint.
Before paint dries, students will put a little sand on the plate like in a desert.
Then the students will put their cactus onto the plate to create a mini desert.
Students will write his or her name the plate and let dry overnight.
Students will then get with a buddy to talk about one thing they learned today.

Resources/Materials:

Access for All:

This entire lesson will be completed in class so all students will have access to
it.

Modifications/Accommodations:
Students with disabilities will require extra attention for this assignment.
Possibly have their peers help them count and create the clay structure, depending on
the disability and how severe, teacher may have to assist.
