Audio Management theories usually describe the role of leaders who base their leadership styles
Speech: on rewards and punishment. To further describe how leaders lead, in 1960 Douglas
McGregor developed two theories titled theories X and Y. A few years later, William
Ouchi developed a theory know as theory Z. These theories focused on the human nature
of leaders which was seen as important to ways in which leaders function. Lets learm

Audio Because of human nature and other organizational factors, managers who exhibit
Speech: characteristics of theory X, often see employees as having a dislike for work, avoids
responsibility and have little determination. Managers with this view prefers to lead by
giving sanctions since it is believed that rewards will not work. On the other hand,
managers using the theory Y style, see employees as being creative and will get the best
output from employees that enjoy what they do. These managers however believes that if
INDIVIDUAL STORYBOARD ASSIGN 3 17

there are problems within the organization, the employees are not at fault but rather
management. The last theory, theory Z, brings a different perspective. The manager
subscribing to this theory leads their employees in ways so that they can work together
more effectively. They generally believe that involved workers are the key to
productivity. Check out the next two pages for videos on these theories. Use the next

Audio Leadership gets its influence from power. The sources of leaderships power can be
Speech: derived through various means. We will discuss three of the most popular sources of
power: They are: 1. Rational grounds 2. Traditional grounds 3. Charismatic grounds.
What image is depicted in the 1st clipart? Correct a judge! People like judges are said to
INDIVIDUAL STORYBOARD ASSIGN 3 23

have derived power in leadership through rational grounds. According to Herrick (2003),
power through rational grounds are based on the right of those who are promoted to
positions of rank to exercise legal authority. In describing the other two legitimate sources
of power in leadership, Herrick also explained that power gained in leadership through
traditional grounds is based on the sanctity of long held traditions concerning who holds
authority. The Queen of England is considered as deriving leadership power through
traditional grounds. Attaining power in leadership through charismatic grounds, is
exemplified in situations where there is exemplary character that causes respect, devotion
by others and also through acts of heroism. For more examples on these sources of power

Audio Media leaders are faced with varying challenges given the medias dynamic environment.
Speech: Powers and Lacy (1992) highlighted that issues such as labour, in relation to job
satisfaction, remuneration etc are always a challenge in media organizations. They also
explained that factors within journalists, become barriers when leading. For example
INDIVIDUAL STORYBOARD ASSIGN 3 33

personal goals and personal issues journalists may face. Adding to this, in a study
conducted by Powers and Lacy journalists preferred to be led by democratic leaders rather
than by autocratic leaders. Other issues Media leaders must face are organizational
settings, which deals with the structure of media organizations and internal conflicts.
These issues affect job satisfaction which in turn affect performance. Managers must
therefore understand these issues and devise sound strategies to deal with them.
