Position Paper
Today I am writing my feelings about how important it is to continue to
have Teaching and Learning with Technology. Technology is a growing part
of this century. Our children are familiar with some form of technology,
whether we like it or not. Technology is important to us. You can do lots of
research with technology. With that being said, we need to continue to use
technology in our classrooms. Technology not only can help our students
grow, but it can help their education. Our children can use technology to
learn a topic, or understand a concept better. Having teachers be able to use
technology in their classes should be promoted not prohibited. After taking
this class, teaching teachers with technology I have a better understanding of
all the software that is out there. By having all these software available to us
we can help students grow. We can help show students how fun learning can
be. Technology can be an incredible learning tool. By allowing teachers to
continue to have the use of technology we can help prepare our students for
the future. Its almost like we are giving them a running start. When they
grow older and have a career, they will in some way have to use wireless
technology. Technology can offer a way to teach skills in better dept. It can
help students learn the way they like too. Technology gives access to tons of
resources and materials that can help students. I believe that having the use
of technology in the classroom is the future. Our society continues to grow,
along with technology. Technology is all around us. We shouldnt shut it out
from out students. Yes, technology can be a distraction, but cant our peers,
yet we still allow our students to sit right next to them. We need to have
technology in our classrooms it is necessary. How else are our children
going to use technology properly? If we allow technology in our classrooms
we can teach the students the importance of using technology effectively.
We need to help the students along the process. We need to help them
understand that technology can be a problem, but it can also help your
education grow in multiple ways. What better way to do that, then in a
classroom? By continuing to have technology in our classrooms we are
showing students the importance of the use of technology. We!need!
technology!in!every!classroom!and!in!every!student!and!teachers!hand,!
because!it!is!the!pen!and!paper!of!our!time,!and!it!is!the!lens!through!
which!we!experience!much!of!our!world!(David).!They will grow to learn
that technology may have lots of games, or it may be cool to watch a funny
video with your friends, but they can grow and learn that technology can
help them. It can help them learn materials and give them multiple
resources. You see we need technology in our classrooms. We need to show
our students that technology can help them academically.
Identification of Standards
After reading through the CCSD Technology Education Standards, Nevada
Performance Indicators, National Educational Technology Standards, and
Common Core standards I can honestly say I had to read it so many times.
There are so many standards and guidelines that you had to read through and
it was very time consuming, but I now have a better understanding of
standards of the school District in Nevada. On the Computer and technology
Education Standards there were lots of pages to go through, but I liked how
it gave exceeds, meets, and approaches standards. I like how they separated
that. Basically it gave the standards for a bunch of different grades. On most
of them that exceeds standards the teacher is to teach the students that the
student knows how to explain, demonstrate, and create. I thought it was
interesting that it had it like that. I really like how they show you what meets
the standards and what doesnt. For some exceeds standards you learn how
to compose a word-processing document or explain the uses of electronic
communication. On another website that shows all of the programs,
counseling, assessments that the school has to offer. On the ISTE Standards
for students it gives 6 standards that you must meet. Standard one state
student demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop
innovative products and processes using technology. Standard two states
students use digital media an environments to communicate and work
collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and
contribute to the learning of others. Standard three says students apply
digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Standard number four
says students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research,
manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using
appropriate digital tools and resources. Standard five says students
understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and
practice legal and ethical behavior. Standard number six students
demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and
operations. It is obvious for me to say that all of these websites show the
standards for students in school. Each website though it different some of
them go into depth. For example, Students create a multimedia document
using text, graphics, and sound or indemnity and use devices that require
connectivity. While on another website that shows different standards
students exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports
collaboration, learning, and productivity or communicate information and
ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats.
All of these websites are different, but somewhat the same. These websites
have shown me the standards that our district has for students. For my
project below I will be using Standard #2 Students use digital media and
environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a
distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of
others.

LESSON PLAN FORMAT FOR SECTION 4

Name of lesson: Spelling bee PowerPoint.

Grade Level Appropriateness: (you decide this)- Fifth Grade

Technology Content Standard Addressed: This will be the standard(s) you will meet
by teaching the lesson, and should be identical to the one you identified in Section 3
above. This is the standard required by CCSD, or the state, or nation for all children to be
taught. Standard required by CCSD:

Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work

collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and
contribute to the learning of others.

Other Content Standard Addressed: This will be the standard(s) you will meet by
teaching the lesson, and should be one other standard that can be accomplished outside of
the Technology curriculum. For instance, a standard from MATH, READING,
LANGUAGE ARTS, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES, or other core area.

Standard interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing
a variety of digital environments and media. Contribute to project teams to produce
original works or solve problems.

Objective: Lesson objectives are the specific outcomes you are hoping to achieve in
the lesson that is being taught at that specific time.

The student will be able to work with another individual effectively. The students
will learn how to use PowerPoint. They will understand how to type. They will
understand how to search and add pictures.

Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: (List should include hardware, software, and
all other hands-on instructional materials needed)

Need PowerPoint software, list of the spelling words and a dictionary.

Suggested group size: (How many students will be working together on the project)
There will be two students per group.

Procedures: (Step by step narrative for implementation of the lesson.) Write this
CLEARLY and THOROUGHLY enough so any SUBSTITUTE teacher could pick
up your lesson plan, and easily implement it in your absence. Have someone else
proof read what you have in this section and see if they can make sense of what you
are trying to say... If they seem confused by your written directions... so will a
substitute teacher..... and so will I. (BE MORE DETAILED IN WRITING THAN
YOU ARE THINKING IN YOUR HEAD.)

1. Have each student choose a partner for this project.

2. Have students come pick up the list of spelling words and a dictionary.
3. Have students go sit at a computer with their partner.
4. Help students find PowerPoint software.
5. Students need to create a title page with their own title and names.
6. Students need to create 10 slides with the spelling words.
7. Students will write the spelling number at the top of the slide
8. Students will write the spelling word next. Ex: Word- school
9. After writing the word define what the spelling word means.
10. Then have students use the spelling word in a sentence.
11. Have students add a picture on the slide that goes with the spelling word.
12. To add a picture have the students go to the home tab and click on the text
icon to add a text box.
13. After adding a text box, have the students click on the picture icon to select
an appropriate picture for their word.
14. Have students repeat these steps until they have 11 total slides.
15. After they are done students can change the background of their slides. They
can also change the transitions between slides by selecting the transitions tab.
16. Have student be prepared to present this project in class.

Assessment: (Tell how you will specifically grade student work or progress.) Review
the assessment material from our text, or from the textbook you used during your Intro
courses at CSN so that you can clearly define the method you will use for assessment.

I will grade the students progress on how well they do the project. I will see if the
students accurately complete the project and understand the concepts of how to
create a PowerPoint. I will grade on whether they can work well with another
student or not. I will grade to see if they are able to follow directions. I will continue
to get to know my students, so that I can know them personally. By doing this I am
getting a better grasp on the students so I can see if a project is too difficult for them
to understand. I will continue to help and teach the students so that they can learn
more.
