Creating A Researchers Profile

While viewing documentaries and reading academic essays you may have wondered What
makes this person the right researcher for the job? Asking questions about a researchers
strengths, skills and weakness leads to creating a profile of that researcher. In this activity, you
will profile yourself as a researcher by answering a series of questions. As an inexperienced
researcher, knowing your strengths, skills, and weakness will enable you to conduct better
researcher to fill in the blanks. Since you will one day conduct research for various classes as
well as your career, and since each project will be different, you should answer these questions
with each new project to check what you bring to that project as well as what you lack.

What qualifies you as the right person for the proposed project? Focus on your
strengths, experiences, and personal relationship to the topic. What personal curiosities,
experiences, or knowledge make you a good researcher of your topic? Why are you the person
who should do this research? Why does this research need to be done now?
I believe that the biggest qualification I possess is the fact that there is many individuals in my
family that have careers in the medical field. This means that I have pretty good background
knowledge in medicine. Since I want to pursue a career in medicine, I have this personal
curiosity of wanting to find out more about the field of work I am going in. Research on the
development of medical technology needs to be done in order to find out how it is changing the
world and the field of work itself, and if the pros outweigh the cons or vice versa.

Reframe your shortcomings. A successful researcher is one who can reframe his or her faults,
weakness or shortcomings as a strength and advantage. Consider your shortcomings as a
researcher and reframe them as a strength. Example: I am uninformed about this topic, but
knowing so little drives my curiosity.
One of my shortcomings, could be that I have so much background knowledge. It may lead to
write in a biased fashion on my essays. It is something that I have to look out for every time I
write in order to remain neutral.

Your Diversity Statement. As a researcher how do you bring diversity to the project? Think in
terms of the following demographic elements: class, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender,
sexuality, politics, education, socioeconomics, region, religion, generation, disability, relationship
status, parental status, occupation, and other demographic elements.
1. I am a Mexican-American citizen, so in turn I have seen how medicine is important in both
countries and the differences between their medical development.

2. I am a Medical Studies major at ASU, which shows that I am pursuing a career in the medical
field and at least have some sort of background knowledge on my topic.

3. I live in the United States, which is one of the top leading countries on medical research and
technology development.

Developing Your Diversity. When considering the demographics listed above, which constitute
your blind spots? Have you included diverse perspectives in your research, or have you
included mostly white male American authors and researchers?? Which element of diversity have
you considered least during your research? Select three demographics from the list above, note
them in the table below, and briefly describe how you can use new research to compensate for
the blind spots or gaps in your existing research.
1. I am male, so I might not know the perspectives of this topic from a womans point of view.

2. I am in the middle socioeconomic class, so I have no idea how this topic influences or affect
the other economic classes.

3. My only occupation is being a student, so I dont have any actual hands on experience with
the topic I am writing about.

Developing Perspectives. Find five new sources that bolster the strengths of your research,
and compensate for the blind spots and gaps in your research. Put a citation or link in the chart
below and explain the perspective. Find at least 1 source for each of the demographics below.
