PART A: Describe how students could create and publish an original movie, audio
file, podcast, or vodcastMULTI-MEDIA AUTHORING
in order to achieve required TEMPLATE
learning standards. Challenge:
For an A provide an idea where the learning activity reaches a LoTi level 4a or
above. To do this you will have to design a project where students engage in higher-
order thinking and publish their work to an audience that will use or care about the
results. Broad feedback for their work is also a great way to boost interest and
performance.
Grade Level: Third Grade
Content Area: Historical Understandings
Technology Used (check all that apply): Movie Audio Podcast
Vodcast Other: (list)
Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: SS3H2- The student will
discuss the lives of Americans who expanded peoples rights and freedoms in a
democracy. a. Paul Revere (independence), Frederick Douglass (civil rights), Susan B.
Anthony (womens rights), Mary McLeod Bethune (education), Franklin D. Roosevelt
(New Deal and World War II), Eleanor Roosevelt (United Nations and human rights),
Thurgood Marshall (civil rights), Lyndon B. Johnson (Great Society and voting rights),
and Csar Chvez (workers rights)

Brief Description of Learning Experience:

Students will choose an historical figure to create a short picture movie about. This
person must be an American who expanded peoples rights and freedoms in a
democracy. Once students know who they want to create the motion picture about,
they will perform research. They will look up major events that took place during the
time of their person and what they did to strive during this complex time in their
lives. Once they did this, they will gather pictures and arrange them in an order that
tells a story about what their person did and how it changed our lives for the better.

With guidance from the instructor, students will create a movie using MovieMaker
with pictures they found. They will also find a piece of music that fits the mood of the
story to play in the background as the pictures show. The teacher will scaffold and
show them how to condense the song, fade it in and out. This should take no more
than 3 days to complete. Once the students finish, they will download the movie and
upload it dropbox and send it to you. You will then upload their movies onto your
password protected blog. The following day, you will pull up each students video and
have them present. They will tell the story of their person while the movie is playing.

Student Engagement/Higher-Order Thinking: This activity is student-centered

but the teacher is still in the picture, scaffolding and directing them so this activity
falls under Loti level 4.
Importance of technology: This lesson could not be completed without technology.
Having available, free programs such as MovieMaker helps make learning fun and
engaging. With these hands-on tools, children would not have the motivation to learn.
They would not be able to create something this excited and different without
technology.
Inspiration (optional):

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Students will be sharing their movie among
other classmates. It will be posted on my password protected teacher blog for the
students and parents to access if needed. 1
Other comments about your proposed student multimedia authoring
activity: Students can use this tool to create movies about other subjects as well.
