Cash and Internal Controls


Basic principle on internal control over cash is that all payments should be by
check. Only exception to this rule is Petty Cash Payments, i.e. small expenses
that can be paid in cash. For this purpose the company sets up a Petty Cash
Fund to make small payments. Cash payments for small expenses are made
from this petty cash fund. The expense receipts are stored and at the end of
accounting period, the accounting entries passed for all expenses met out of
petty cash fund. The petty cash fund is replenished with cash by the amount of
expense incurred out of the fund.
