education settings and through common every day activities.
`Students hear and orally use sight words but need practice in identifying it
in printed text in order to progress in reading skills.
LESSON OUTLINE
TIME: STEPS:
INTRODUCTION: `Explain to students that they will be learning new words
Learning words to that will help them read.

MOTIVATION: `Instruct students to select a book from the reading
I spy the word corner and bring it back to the table (ensure that lesson-
appropriate books are available).
`Inform them that they will be playing I Spy but they
will be searching for words that will be shown on the
screen.
`Show students one word at a time (number of words
and list of words presented each week depends on
student levels and goals)
`Read the word to the student and have them repeat it
while you point to the word.
`Instruct students to look for that word by saying I Spy
(word)
`Give students time to look for the word and walk around
to ensure that students are looking or have found the
word.
`Do this for some or all of the words that will be studied
for the week (or two depending on student needs)
EXPLORATION: `Show the list of sight words
Learning the `Point and read words to students and have them repeat
`Teach students the ASL for words that apply and have
words them imitate the sign while saying the word
`Have students write their sight word list in their reading
notebooks (copy/trace) repeatedly
`Instruct students to say the word as they write or trace

4. Have student look through newspapers or other
media to find sight words that are being dictated
to them.
5. Physical activities using sight words (hot potato,
hopscotch, jump rope, etc.)
