Speaking Work Plan

Introduction

Introduction to be used for the speaking tasks:

Playing a simplified game of 21 questions for students to guess which

festival I am talking about (this is best played once students have completed
the reading requirements for this theme)

Showing students pictures of festivals and asking them to guess what

happens (this is best done before students have read the related passages, or
about festivals that havent been mentioned in the reading)

Adding conversation starters on the table and asking students to talk

about the questions before having a whole class conversation. E.g. do you
enjoy meeting new people? What is an interesting fact you know about another
country? What are some holidays in the UAE or around the world that you
know about?

Warm up activities would include:

- Discussion: festivals. Do you like to celebrate them? Which is your favorite

and why?

- Vocabulary brainstorm:

1. Small-group work: brainstorming sessions on cultural celebrations from

around the world, record their ideas on a Popplet mind map.

2. The teacher writes students ideas on the board, and then we put these
words into categories that match our vocabulary list.
Specific learning activities (speaking)

The ways I choose to explain this weeks material would be:

Asking students to work in groups and find specific information about

certain festivals

Assigning students their oral presentation project, which would be:

Oral Presentation Project:

1. Students choose a festival or celebration that they find interesting (either

from the reading passages or any that they would be interested in presenting
about). Festivals could include anything from art festivals to film festivals, food
festivals, religious festivals, etc.

2. In the presentation, students would have to include: name of the festival

or celebration, where and when it takes place, historical background, the kind
of people who attend, what events or activities that take place, what kind of
food people eat, etc.)

3. The presentation rubric would look at: communication (smooth delivery,

capturing audience attention, preparedness, voice volume, eye contact, etc.);
content (accuracy); grammar (spoken grammar, use of conjunctions,
connecting words, prepositions of time and place, adverbs of frequency,
spelling and punctuation); vocabulary use

Checking for understanding (formative or summative assessments)

Some strategies I would use to check for understanding for the speaking
activities:
1. Fill in a graphic organizer that describes:
1. Shared experiences by different celebrations e.g. Lantern Festival of China
and Festival of Lights, Berlin from those that were presented
2. The most interesting celebration/presentation and why
3. Important facts, important traditions, important symbols and their
meanings
2. The actual presentation/speaking task would be a method for me to check
their understanding.
