Help Disable to Be Capable

From Danny Lee, Jayden Mulder, & Joanne Lee

Overview of Issue
As the population grows in the United States, the population of the disabled people also has
increased. A big percentage of the Americans are looking for jobs but there is a minority that is
having a harder time getting a job or an opportunity to be exposed in the society, the disabled
people.Comparing to 1991, the employment rate of the disabled has been decreased to 41.1
percent from 50.2 percent while the one of the normalpeople has decreased only 5.3 percent
from 79.1 percent in 2010 (Gallacher). Such statistic from CNN Money implies that the disabled
people get less opportunities to work in the society, which causes them to be isolated and
excluded. Even worse, the disable people who has gotten job unfairly receive low salary
comparing to the average employees. According to CNN Money, the average annual earnings of
the disabled is $23,532; differently, the average annual earnings of workers without disability is
$32,688 (Gallacher). The unequal salaries and chances to get hired reduce the interaction that the
disabled people can have. Employers underestimate that all disabled people have lower
intelligence, physical flexibility, and social ability than they do, which leads to exclusion and
disadvantages of the disabled from their society and their world.

Mission Statement and Philosophy

Transforming the disabled to the capable.
It would be very challenging in various ways to be involved in the working field as a disabled
person. There could be any social, mental, and physical obstacle against the person. Our
organization helps the disabled people who are struggling to be included in the society and to let
them experience in the working environment by teaching them certain labors such as making
bracelets and other handmade products that could be sold to customers. By providing that jobs,
we help them to learn that they have the potential and that they are not below the average people.
By the money that our organization made through selling handmade products and non-profit
fundraiser in neighbor communities, we financially and medically support the disabled people to
live healthily. We transform each disabled persons pessimistic belief about themselves into a
confident belief that he or she is a capable individual in California.

Action Plan

Immediate Plan: Start a non profit organization focused in Southern California that helps assist
disabled people with bill payments/ utility payments/ education help/ and medical help. The
funds raised will go towards direct payment help and also tutor/assistant help. Some assistants
jobs will be to assist disabled people with any living struggles and help them with gaining/
keeping jobs if their condition it intense enough to the point where they are not able to
accomplish daily tasks.

Long-Term Plan: Create local housing units for disabled people who are not able to function
alone and provide a large enough income to pay for their own housing. This will be offered to
those who apply and are reviewed and accepted based on their condition of needs. The long term
goal also includes everything in the immediate plan.
What Makes Us Different: There are hundreds of organizations out there that have almost the
same goals as ours, but we found some local ones that don't offer the same things ours does.
Unlike Harbor Regional Center Located in Torrance CA, our organization provides support with
bill, and utility payment that are not able to be paid because of the person's disability. Another
way that makes our organization stick out is other organizations like Inland Regional Center only
provide job support, but ours gives various supportive options.

Financial Need
The funds raised will be even dispersed over paying for tutors and utility/bill
payment support.
All of the money will be used to benefit the disabled and none will kept for our
own making us a non-profit organization.
The dispersal of the funds will not be completely precise because of the various
needs of different people with different disabilities.
There will be a savings account for the long term goal as well.
Programs such as basic medical and educational programs will be provided
through your donation.
Monthly, an individual disabled person needs approximately $480($130 for basic
medicare, $600 for education or tutoring, and $250 for buying materials that the person
will make products out of)
