John Uriel Cabarrubias Obviously it's fine, but they can if the government will change the constitution by removing
all foreign ownership limit to allow U.S. media companies to own TV channels and TV stations can be affiliate with
those U.S. TV Network in the first place (like 1980s or 1990s). Or just build a TV station by a local/foreign firm to carry
ABC programming instead of IBC 13, However foreign media can't operate their news division from a local TV station
in the Philippines unless they have a "Local marketing agreement" with a local broadcast company to re-air their local
news programs to that TV station that owned by a foreigner (ABC America) but operate by a local broadcast company
under a agreement that I mentioned before. (Just my ideas/suggestions/opinions/)

Joshua Jimenez actually, the examples you cited are not actually affiliations with US networks, they are syndication
deals. Usually they are mixed with locally produced shows. Local marketing agreements would make a good
alternative, as foreign ownership of media is prohibited by even other countries as that would infringe in sovereignty.
Besides why lift ownership controls to benefit only one country? Gusto mo yata ibalik ang parity rights eh. and about
foreign media can't operate here, FYI Al Jazeera has established a bureau in Manila.

John Uriel Cabarrubias I mean if a foreign media will buy a local TV station in the Philippines, they can, but
establish a news division for a local TV station is forbidden unless they have a news sharing/local marketing
agreement with a local broadcast media company to keep from infringing our sovereignty and pride.

It's final: Automated polls to push through

MANILA, Philippines - There is no more legal barrier to the automation of the general elections in
May.
Voting 13-2, justices of the Supreme Court (SC) have upheld an earlier ruling on the legality of the
P7.2-billion automation contract between the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and the
Smartmatic Corp.Total Information Management (TIM) Inc. consortium.
In its decision, the SC dismissed the appeal of the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) led by UP
professor and lawyer Harry Roque Jr. for lack of new substantial argument.
On the basis of the arguments, past and present, presented by the petitioners, the Court does not
find any grave abuse of discretion on the part of Comelec in awarding the automation contract to the
joint venture of private respondents, the 15-page resolution penned by Associate Justice Presbitero
Velasco Jr. read.
With this ruling, any question as to legality of the poll automation contract has been laid to rest, SC
administrator and spokesman Jose Midas Marquez told reporters.
Malacaang was elated by the decision.
We are happy that the High Court has decided to lift this legal cloud hanging over the automation
process, and we hope that no more obstacles remain in the countrys pursuit of a successful
automated election, deputy presidential spokesman Gary Olivar said.
The SC said CCMs arguments in its motions for reconsideration were a mere rehash of issues
already resolved in its ruling on Sept. 10 last year.
The SC has also dismissed as highly speculative and without evidentiary value the concern of
petitioners over the possibility that the consortium might not be able to set up the required
telecommunications facilities stipulated in the contract.
Surely, a possible breach of a contractual stipulation is not a legal reason to prematurely rescind,
much less annul, the contract, the SC said.
It also described as untenable CCMs use of unverified news reports to claim that Smartmatic-TIM
has sub-contracted the production of the precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines to Shanghai-
based Quisdi.
In its ruling, the SC also junked the interventions of election lawyer Pete Quadra and the Senate
through Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile.
Quadra, who died four months ago, had questioned the auditability of the results of the automated
elections.
But the SC explained that the system to be used is a paper-based system and has a provision for
system auditability.
The SC also dismissed CCMs argument that the Comelec and the consortium violated a provision of
the Poll Automation Law on pilot testing of the automation system in the country.
The court took into consideration the position of the Senate that pilot testing was not a condition
precedent to full automation.
Comelec earlier argued that the term pilot testing as used in Section 6 of Republic Act 9369 merely
states that for the regular national and local elections, the machines shall be used in at least two
highly urbanized cities and two provinces...
Absentee voting
Meanwhile, the Comelec has agreed to automate the overseas absentee voting (OAV) in Hong Kong
and Singapore following assurances from Smartmatic-TIM that there is still enough time to ensure its
smooth implementation, according to Comelec Commissioner Armando Velasco, chair of the
Committee on OAV.
The Comelec earlier cancelled plans to automate the elections in Hong Kong, Singapore and Saudi
Arabia due to the host governments worry of having a huge number of people converging in one
place.
Theres no more objection but they are requesting us for a dialogue. They want to see what this
automation is all about. They are very eager to see the mechanics of this automation, he said.
But the Comelec will have to work double time since OAV begins on April 10 or one month before the
actual election on May 10.
Velasco admitted that the poll body has yet to conduct an education drive on automated election
among the voters in Hong Kong and Singapore.
The Comelec and Smartmatic-TIM will send 19 PCOS machines to Hong Kong and seven to
Singapore.
Velasco added that due to high interest in the automation system, they expect voter turnout of 50
percent.
In the 2007 midterm polls, voter turnout for OAV was a low 16 percent.
Comelec records show there are 95,000 registered voters in Hong Kong and 31,000 in Singapore.

Six years ago, I chanced on an article about political jingles and slogans. I forgot its
source, but let me share it with this group (and later on, at the Pinoy Nostalgia page)
Campaign ads, videos and taglines. Who's been naughty or nice this election season? As
May 10 draws near, let us all take a moment to reflect on the season which is second
only to Christmastime in length and cultural importance to Filipinos: election season. (Or
is it even second?) Even months before the official campaign period started, we have
been barraged with faces, names and promises by all these candidates. So much
election propaganda has polluted our airwaves, so much paper and plastic on our
streets, so much rhetoric yet so few actual choices in our so-called democracy. Monday
is just a step away, and as we all finalize our lists and prepare our codigos, now is
probably a good time to assess all these election-related videos and whatnot. After all,
these are instances of culture, and whether or not these candidates propaganda are
truthfultruth being prone to contesting viewsthey do say much about ourselves,
our society and the system we live in. It is necessary to note that as with any award-
giving body, these views are the product of subjectivities like taste, class and ideological
positions. You are free to not share my opinions, but you are also free to enjoy them. I
hope you do the latter. Relax lang, peeps. Without further ado, I begin this three-part
series with a roundup of this seasons best and worst videos and taglines.
Best Campaign TVC (Individual)

Satur Ocampo Sure Ka Kay Satur! series. Were tired of seeing all these politicos
shoving their faces at us, hogging the credit for specific achievements. The brilliance of
Saturs ads is that they go against this narcissistic grain. We see workers, students,
farmers and professionals proudly owning their respective achievements. These
accomplishments are never singlehandedly attributed to Satur. Rather, the agency of
these very sectors is upheld and celebrated. While Ocampo lets each sector speak of its
own triumphs, these sectors in turn recognize Ocampos invaluable role in each victory.
These ads showcase Saturs undeniably impressive pro-people track record, as well as
his democratic outlook which is strongly anchored on grassroots involvement.
Worst Campaign TVC (Individual)

Risa Hontiveros Maganda ang Laban. Is this video irritating or what?! This woman
seems to think that the elections is a beauty pageant. Her commercial doesnt show an
ounce of track record or a shred of commitment. Ganda lang ang puhunan. Heck, she
cant even commit to dancing. If shes gonna bank on her beauty, she might as well go
all the way! Igiling mo, beybeh! Not this half-baked rocking to and fro (if you call that
dancing), while flashing the Laban sign and cutesy smiles. Please. This video makes me
shudder.
Honorable Mention
Noynoy Aquino Laban NaTo! (The Rap Video). If one could face raps for rapping,
siguro kalaboso na si Noynoy ngayon. Ugh.
Best Campaign Video (Group)

NP Suportahan ang Kababaihan. This is a surprisingly good commercial. Not only
does the ad flaunt the fact that Nacionalista Party has the most female-dominated slate,
it also supplies a quite sensitive and well-delivered (kudos sa AD at speech coach!)
script. The scoring is understated, and the cinematography interacts with the production
design well, the pale blue-tinged whites complementing the various orange shades of
the candidates outfits. Most of all, the ad makes Miriam seem gentle, vulnerable and
sensitive. That is an achievement in itself.
Best Music Video

Eddie Villanueva Eddie Tayo. Eddie Villanuevas music video is very youthful, and
features music by one of our generations most talented rappers, Gloc 9. There is the
classic road trip imagery, which brings to mind summer days and carefree times. The
video features lively camerawork and editing, combining fun choreography with colorful
graphics and well-made animation. The highlight, of course, is the music. Gloc 9 posits,
Sino pa? Eh di ako! Kailan pa? Eh di ngayon! The wordplay between eh di and
Eddie is sheer genius; the citizens agency is maintained alongside support for
Villanueva, both sharing equal prominence. The message is that beyond voting, Filipino
citizens involvement in governance is essential para maitaguyod ang bayan ni Juan.
Worst Music Video

Noynoy Aquino Hindi Ka Nag-iisa. As I said in an earlier post, this video just shows
that bourgeois solidarity and interests are Noynoys main selling point.
Best Tagline (Senator)

Imelda Papin Tinig ng Bawat Pilipino sa Senado. And what a tinig it is! Jukebox
queen!
Honorable Mention
Franklin Drilon Big Justice. A great spin on Drilons obesity. But its obesity
nonetheless.
Worst Tagline (Partylist)

PBA Partylist Sports lang, you know! No, I dont know!

Bank Corporation, and A.B. Leisure and Exponent, Inc., presents the collection of Danny Dolor
Philippine movie ads to reminisce the yesteryears for the appreciation of everyone.
The exhibit runs unitl May 30, 2016 at the NCCA Gallery, 633 General Luna Street, Intramuros, Manila.
To complement the exhibit, film showing of two (2) of the four (4) remaining films that survived the
post war era will be shown. Film screening of Ibong Adarna, will be on May 11, 2016 at 1:00 pm and

This double-decker bus used to ply Roxas Boulevard from the Port Area all the way to
Baclaran & back again. Rates per passenger were set at 20 centavos in 1975. Children
who were less than 1 meter in height were admitted free.

GREAT MUSICIANS. I had the pleasure of savoring some fine music of great Filipino musicians last
Thursday and Saturday night. I was with friends sitting on a table at Danny's Grill along Timog Avenue,
when some elderly guys sitting on the table next to us stood up and obliged to play some music on the
stage. The guys, who were all in their 70s, played the music of their time. I mean, o our time. It was
jamming time anyway. They played the Electromaniacs' "I Miss You So" followed by "Lovers' Guitar." I
was so mesmerized watching the four guys playing the two classic music. Later, they returned to their
seats and I told one of the guys that the lead guitarist played like Ernie Delgado, the lead guitarist of
the old Electromaniacs, one of the early local combos that sprang out in the 1960s. The guy told me:
"Pare, si Ernie Delgado nga iyan." "Hah! Sori hindi ko nakilala," I told him with a touch of
embarrassment. Later, I talked to Ernie, who gamely accepted my offer of apology for not knowing
him. Ernie is one of the finest musicians the country has produced over the last 60 years. He is the
composer of the two great songs they played. He is 75 yo and has retired from active music. But he
would oblige when asked to play some music. Last night, I was also with friends when we went to My
Brother's Moustache and watched Noel Cabangon, who played his music, mostly his compositions. We
were fortunate to listen to "Kanlungan" (Pana-panahon ...) and "Tatsulok," his two better known songs.
I had some small talks with Noel during his break at the end of his show. He will be at My Bros
Moustache on July 2. I will definitely find time to watch him again...

Today in Philippine History, March 24, 2001, Roselle Ambubuyog became the first visually-impaired
Filipina who emerged summa cum laude
On March 24, 2001, Roselle Ambubuyog became the first visually-impaired Filipina to emerge as
summa cum laude graduate of the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU).
Born on January 12,1980, Ambubuyog, totally blind since age six, finished her bachelor of science
degree, major in mathematics with flying colors. She was also chosen as class valedictorian chosen
among all summa cum laude graduates.
She earlier graduated valedictorian from her elementary school and, four years later, was again
valedictorian of her high school batch.
As a scholar of ADMU, the school bought Ambubuyog a Braille Translation Software program that
converts encoded or scanned text to computer as well as a Braille printer that produces hard copy
Braille to make the exam questionnaires, lecture notes, and other classroom materials.
Also bought for her was the talking calculator so she can hear the numbers while she computes.
With her determination, she achieved clinched the Valedictorian of The Year Award for the whole
graduating batch of 2001 which was chosen among all Summa Cum Laude.
Ambubuyog also won all the other awards possible for a graduating Ateneo student: the president's
award for service and excellence as most outstanding individual; the St. Ignatius Award for
Outstanding Scholar, and the departmental award for mathematics.
Outside the university she has received the Jose Rizal Model Student award from the Knights of Rizal
Supreme Council and one of the science awards from Bank of the Philippine Islands.

Manuel I. Yamsuan, Jr., more fondly known in media and art circles as Noli,
photojournalist and photographer of saints, popes and bishops, passed away at 3:45
p.m. today (December 10) at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center. He was 71.
Noli had been in the hospital for more than a month, after having suffered an acute
stroke and complications of diabetes.
In a career that spanned more than 40 years, Noli documented and photographed for
various international and local publications historical and political milestones in the
country. But he is most remembered and acclaimed for his coverage of the life and
ministry of the late Jaime L. Cardinal Sin, Archbishop of Manila. As Cardinal Sins official
and personal photographer, Noli also chronicled major events of the Philippine Catholic
Church, including the three papal visits to the Philippines by two Popes (Pope John Paul II
in 1981 and 1995 and Pope Francis in 2015).
He continued to shoot bishops and priests, as he often said in jest, as photo editor and
chief photographer of the Archdiocese of Manila. Over the past few years, he shared his
expertise in the unique craft of liturgical photography through a series of seminars for
professional and student photography enthusiasts.
Noli was a licensed chemical engineer, having graduated with a Bachelors Degree from
the University of Santo Tomas, where he also completed his secondary education. He
joined the defunct Philippine Daily Express in 1972, giving in to a passion and launching
a long and multi-awarded career in photojournalism and photography.
