Working at a Childrens Center as an Assistant Teacher
2015-2016 School Year
Description
The artifact I have chosen is a T-Shirt from the Daycare I worked at during my senior
year of high school. As an assistant teacher, I could have a few children in my care by myself and
would aid another teacher when more arrived. My duties included getting snacks ready, helping
with/creating lessons, as well as helping the lead teacher with whatever they needed. This
opportunity gave me the chance to form relationships with my students and their families, and
work well with others.
Alignment
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
This artifact best aligns with Standard 10: Collaboration, which states the teacher fosters
relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support
students learning and well-being. During my assistant teaching, I was constantly working with
the lead teachers around the daycare as well as my peers, which fits Standard 10. I worked one
on one with the other teacher as to what lesson plans would work best with the age group I was
in. It also gave me an opportunity to ask the other teachers and my peers how they dealt with
troubled toddlers, since I had a hard age group. Because of this I was better prepared to deal with
my students fits, and this helped them learn in a better environment.
Through this I learned how to be an accurate team leader and was able to form
relationships with not only my co-teachers but parents as well. I am now better equipped to not
only execute proper lessons, but also run a classroom effectively.
UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Alignment:
This artifact best aligns with KSD4.d: Contributes to the School District The candidate
is able to assume a leadership role among colleagues and is supportive and cooperative with
peers volunteers, and serves as a participant and leader in school events and school and district
projects.
Assistant teaching gave me a new chance to work one on one with the school as a person
of authority, also work with peers to carry out tasks. In class the other assistants and I formed
cork board illustrations off of the others ideas for each of our classrooms. With their help, I was
able to adjust my teaching style, which improved my students participation in classroom
activities. With increased participation, it allowed me to grow into a more competent teacher, and
I became dedicated to aid in my students growth and happiness.
Secondary KSDs:
KSD4.c.: Communicates with Families
KSD4.e.: Grows and Develops Professionally
KSD2.b.: Establishes a Culture for Learning
What I learned about teaching / learning from this experience:
Assistant teaching and working with toddlers, I learned many new things about my
students dedication to school early on. I was able to watch my students have fun learning, and
helped influence them to enjoy school. It was also crucial for me to with parents so that I knew
we were all doing what we could to ensure proper growth. This made me more comfortable in
strange situations I otherwise wouldnt have put myself in, and it allowed me to experience new
things as a teacher.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience:
Working one-on-one with others is what influenced me to be a teacher in the first place.
This interaction later fueled passions of getting to know how my students functioned and what
they enjoyed. I aided my fellow teachers with planning lessons that went with our curriculum to
influence better student participation. Because of all of this I am confident that I would be
successful in a classroom, and as a teacher.
