Discrimination is an act or instance of discriminating, a treatment or consideration of,

or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or

category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit. We have

chosen the theme discrimination and diversity, because we believe that in our 21st century

it is still an issue we are likely to see, especially around younger generations were parents

do not explain that being or looking different is not bad, that people come in all colors and

sizes. We decided that books that teach children to have a better self-esteem are very

important to build a better trust in your own self. Children should learn at a young age that

the minute they walk into school they would see different faces, colors, shapes, hair, etc

We would like to encourage more books with discrimination and diversity into the lives of

young kids, avoiding other kids to feel different and out of place.

Discrimination is not a topic we usually expose to children but before they go to

school, it is necessary to talk to them about the variety of cultures and classmates they will

come into contact with. We need to implement since a very young age that we are all the

same and that no matter the background or our decadence we are all unique and beautiful.

We also need to offer this topic because if a child is being a victim of discrimination it is

necessary for them to know what to do and how to handle the situation. It is important for

them to understand that discrimination will never be an appropriate or acceptable act and

that no one should be a victim of segregation just because of their appearance or their

beliefs.

It is important to show children that they are different so discrimination could be

avoided. We want to show teachers that there are different methods of teaching how to

eliminate discrimination in the classroom. In which were they can use self- reflection as a

method to stop discrimination. Teachers should encourage students to listen, ask questions
and practice inclusion in the classroom for a better communication. Its important to show

kids that its okay to be different and appreciating ourselves is one of the first steps to

accepting others. Having a different haircut, skin color or preferences its not a bad thing, if

we all look the same we wouldnt have diversity that helps us to acquire different

knowledge.

Children imitate everything they see at home including what they watch on TV , such as

violence or bad comments against someone or something. humans are active information

processors and think about the relationship between their behavior and its consequences

(Bandura, 1977). It is very important to also teach children the importance of care for the

feelings of others. The United States is the country with more cultures in the world, kids

are expose to any culture on their class and as parents we should prepare them to it, make

them see is nothing wrong with other kids and it is good to socialize with other cultures and

skin colors.
