The political history of

afghanistan
1973 - 2001
How does this relate to the kite runner ?
The majority of the novel is set in Afghanistan
The main character, Amir, is deeply affected by the
constantly changing politics in his home country
At a young age Amir witnesses the overthrow of the
monarchy
He is forced to flee when the Soviets invade
Amir returns during the Taliban rule and realizes how
much Afghanistan has changed
He witnesses the persecution of the Hazara people as a
child and later as an adult
1973: monarchy is overthrown

While the king Mohammed Zahir Shah is on
vacation in Italy, his cousin Daoud Khan
takes power in a bloodless military coup
He initiates a democratic republic and
declares himself president
Improves womens rights and explores
modern technology
Overall the people are happy with this
change
He forms close ties with the USSR
1979: Soviet occupation
December 24, 1979
The Soviet Army invades Afghanistan
and occupies the country
By 1982, 2.8 million Afghans have
fled to Pakistan
Afghans do not like Soviet occupation
Mujahideen fighters rebel
Soviet troops are gone by February,
1989
1995: Taliban rise to power
Win over Afghan people by promising
peace and promoting traditional Islamic
values
Crack down on womens rights
Enforce law through public executions
United States refuses to recognize this
government
Believe in supremacy of Sunni muslims
Massacre the Hazara people and other minority
groups
Afghans quickly realize the Taliban are
not the relief they were hoping for
2001: Al qaeda terrorist attacks
September 11, 2001
Hijacked planes crash into the World
Trade Center towers, the Pentagon,
and a field in Pennsylvania
Osama Bin Laden is the prime suspect
and he is hiding in Afghanistan
The United States bombs Afghanistan
Americans have a negative view of
Afghanistan and animosity grows
toward muslims in the United States
