INVASION GAMES

Warm-up:

Bean bag tag students run around area to avoid being tagged. If tagged, stand with
hand up until a rescuer frees you by throwing you a ball/beanbag. You then become
the rescuer.
Numbers move around designated area according to what is called out: jog, skip,
march, high knees, silent tiptoes etc. When a number is called, move into a group of
that size.

Developmental Games

Interceptor (2 vs 1)

o Purpose pass without interception

o Concepts maintain possession; create and move to space

Interceptor Circle (3 vs 3)

o In circle, with one attacking player in centre circle, defenders in middle circle,
remaining attacking players outside circle

o Purpose pass without interception

o Concepts - maintain possession; create and move to space

5 Passes (3 vs 3) and then (6 vs 6) increase grid size by removing centre markers

o Purpose pass 5 consecutive passes without interception

o Concepts maintain possession; create and move to space

End Zone (6 vs 6)

o Purpose retain possession but move ball to a scoring position

o Concepts maintain possession; create and move to space; advance ball into
oppositions territory to be able to score

o You can have students able to move anywhere on court/field; in zones; nominate
specific scorers
o You can nominate wingers (one from each side) who roam up and down the
sideline and must be used once before scoring in an end zone. This encourages
ball movement and court use space.

These activities all focused on offensive skills, but you can certainly introduce
defensive skills as well. Its better not to do them all at the same time focus on
defensive skills second if appropriate for the group. An introductory defensive game
is:

Shadow
o Play as 5 Passes, but defensive team scores a point each time they tag an
opposition player in possession of the ball.
o Modify rules as needed (eg. time ball can be held, every player has to
touch it, cant pass back etc)
o Discuss man to man and zone defence

Also, for ECE students, a couple of ECE Invasion Games: these can be modified in a
number of ways to make them simpler, or more complex; and introduce basic Invasion
Game strategies. (From Play with Purpose: Fundamental Movement Skills
Teaching, Shane Pill)
