ThegoalsfortheunitwerederiveddirectlyfromtheColoradoAcademicStandards
incombinationwiththelearningactivitiesandbooksIselectedforreadaloud.There
weretwooverarchinggoalsfortheunit.Thefirstgoalwastosteepstudentsinthe
importantqualitiesofmapssothattheywouldbeabletoidentifymapfeaturesand
producetheirownauthenticmaps.Thesecondgoalwastogivestudentsaconceptual
understandingofplacesothattheycouldusetermsrelatedtodirectiontodescribe
locations,understandhowcities,states,countriesandcontinentsareinterrelatedandto
explainthatmapsandglobesaredifferentrepresentationsofEarth.
