Genre Analysis

Women are the people who give everyone life. Women, the most valuable yet

least valued people on this earth. The mothers, grandmothers, sisters and aunts are all

the reason why people are here today. Without them people are nothing. In life

minorities have to be two steps ahead, but being black and a women they have to be

three steps ahead. Through it all they have stayed resilient in spite of all of the negative

images brought toward them, but they have shown themselves to be greater than any

challenge thrown their way, they are multifaceted complex beings. The genres chosen

exemplify a diverse outlook of the rights of women from both sides of the table. The

visual genre is a picture of Donald trump and the second is a speech by Malcolm X

called Who Taught You to Hate Yourself. As the two genres are being presented to the

audience, both will send off a prominent message, but one will be more effective than

the other.

The intended audience of both of the genres would be young girls and women.

The ages of 13-25 is a prominent time in women lives to understand their value and

worth in the world. At this age women are facing obstacles of decisions of what to do

with their body, and they need to be aware that men are the figures making the

decisions for them. The audience should be conscious of how women are not treated as

equal as men. But they should be informed about the logistics and magnitude of how

the two genders are viewed differently. The audience will spend a short amount of time

looking at the picture of Donald Trump signing the reinstated abortion gag rule, because

it is a visual genre. The audience will spend a longer amount of time with Malcolm Xs

speech because in a written genre, they will have to read it and interpret it. The purpose

of the genres are to inform the people in the world. The language that Malcolm X spoke

in his speech was elementary, yet sophisticated. His audience was African Americans in

1965, he was aware that most of the citizens were working people not, educated

people. Nether less he spoke in a vocabulary that they could understand while sounding

professional and educated himself. The visual genre was a picture of white men in the

White House standing behind Donald Trump while he was signing the policy.

Both the visual and written genres use ethos, pathos and logos. The picture

genre is credible because it does not have a phrase or any propaganda on the image to

sway the audience, the audience has to form their own perception of what is going on.

The speech is credible because the speaker is an educated person who has history

fighting for black rights and the rights of women. The speech genre establishes his

platform in the movement. The picture genre is attempting to evoke anger and

motivation to make changes in the world. Because the image of all men who have racist

and sexist views, signing off a right that only women should hold, speaks numbers. And

that should create anger in individuals. The speech genre should enlighten and create

frustration to the audience. In the speech Malcolm X purposes endless amount of

questions to black Americans, inquiring on what was put in their head to make them feel

inferior to white Americans. He stated that The most disrespected person in America is

the Black woman. The most unprotected person in American is the black woman. The

most neglected person in America is the black woman, that as a black society, they

should uphold black women to a higher standard. The evidence used in his speech

were situations in life that he was aware that his audience was going through. The

evidence used in the picture was that it was real picture, not a cartoon or photoshopped

graphic. The similarities between the two genres are that they are attempting to

stimulate a call for the reform of the image and quality of life of women, and black

women. The difference would be that the speech was presented in 1965, and the image

of Trump was very recent, January of 2017 to be exact. But both of the issues are still

very prominent even though of the big time gap.

There are pros and cons with both types of genres. The picture genre can be

more appealing to some because of the visual aspect. People can see exactly what is

going on and can be more entertaining to some. But the written genre can be favored to

others because they see exactly what the speaker is saying. The text being right in front

of them so they can spend how long they want analyzing what they think the speaker

wants the audience to understand. The picture genre can be a detrimental way of

presenting information because with pictures, time is not spent that in depth compared

to a writing. So all the information may not come across to the audience because it will

only keep their attention for a short amount of time. The picture genre has more

freedom of interpretation compared to the speech, because of its openness. While with

the speech, the speaker can angle your thoughts into thinking into one specific way,

making it biased instead of open for discussion.

The two genres both were great examples of the demonstration of women rights

in the United States. The genres were just presented in different approaches. The

written genre was essentially a better choice out of the two, because of its concrete

direction of thought. Women will continue with its poor quality of life until real change

happens.
