Internet needle

Weve come to the point where society is being obsessed with using their phones

and getting on the internet. The majority of people need to use their phones to check on

their latest posted picture or news feed. There are pros and cons when it comes to the

internet. This generation and the young kids that are being raised to use internet at such

a young age impacts their life. It can distract us from daily boredom, and acts as an

escape. This addiction is causing many to feel insecure in their life, and are letting

social media define them. It is giving them a warped sense of identity which is affecting

their lives. It is also giving them an unhealthy space to bully online. Cyberbullying is a

big problem, especially when it comes to teenagers.

Social Media is mostly becoming a platform that is defining natural beauty. It is

making young people feel insecure about themselves when they see someone who

looks better then them. They see the constant posts of someone traveling the world or

doing something fun, and reminds them of something that isnt going on in their life. It

can create feelings of inadequacy, and creates an unrealistic basis for self

comparison(Morgan Meyer). With people finding a way to find a way in improving their

life by seeing things posted, others can affected in negative ways with lowering self

esteem. Social Media is affecting our concepts of beauty. The rise of it has changed the

way we define the meaning of self identity. According to Doves research, 82% of
women now believe that social media has more of an impact on their standard of beauty

than traditional media. It is becoming more of a truth when it comes to social media

changing the brand and the consumer as a whole. We are seeing women take more

control over their definition of beauty than ever before. In fact they feel like they are

responsible for defining their view of beauty, Jess Weiner, Doves global self-esteem

ambassador said, speaking to Mashable. They are becoming less reliant on outside

sources, and are finally defining it for themselves.

Another problem when it comes to internet addiction, would be cyberbullying.

Social Media allows the bullies to hide under their computer screens and make others

suffer. They terrorize individuals and mentally scar them. Young people being victimized

online has increased observation right after a series of suicides. In 2013, for example,

there were suicides happening, and it all linked to the social media site Ask.fm, where

users ask questions anonymously. Social media use is hugely common among

teenagers, said Michele Hamm, a researcher in pediatrics at the University of Alberta,

but the health effects of cyberbullying on social media sites is largely unknown. It is a

lot easier to bully online because when an adult or a child say something to a person

face to face, it is less likely to say something offensive or something without bad

intention. A challenging thing with cyber bullying is that, there are all these platforms to

access social media from like a phone, tablet, any portable devices. Its pretty hard to

escape it when there is a constant connection to the internet from these devices. About

28 percent of students ages 1218 reported being bullied at school during the school

year, according to the Indicators of School Crime and Safety. This happens especially in

teens, and when it happens the child/teen can't just escape from being harassed
because of them being glued to their phones. That also brings back the argument if

internet addiction is real.

Their is the argument that Internet addiction isnt a real disorder and is just an

exaggeration. Doctor John M. Grohol is someone who doesn't believe that internet

addiction isn't a real thing just yet. He thinks that their has been bad research in the past

that has been badly interpreted today. I would have to agree with his point that there

has been bad research but abusing the internet is real. The internet is just an

overreaction. It was the same in previous history when there would be any new

technology coming out, there would be a reaction of the people that would signal the

end of civilized society. The telephone, the automobile, motion pictures, television, and

video games. Internet is just now recently talked about. Their are some people who

need the internet constantly and are in their daily lives but it isnt an official addiction.

There is a beauty to the internet, but it has it flaws regardless just like any other new

technology.
