100 Years of the Urban League Movement

Centennial celebration comes to District

WASHINGTON — At 100 years
old, the National Urban League
Movement is as vital as it’s ever been,
President/CEO Marc Morial said.
“The National Urban League may be
100 years old but we don’t have any
gray hair,” he stated. “We are more
energetic, more focused and more
determined than ever before to create
a level playing field in our nation.”

“People are hurting. This is the first

needed anything. They’ve kept their
families strong and safe and now
they’re coming to us [for help]. It’s
really sad,” she said.
“And so how we get out of this as
a strong people, that’s what I think
this conference is going to be all
about.”
In light of that mission, the
conference will, for the first time,
feature a day of service. Conference
delegates will volunteer with one
of several projects throughout the
metropolitan area, including painting
inspiring murals and creating youth
literacy kits for D.C. school children,
creating quilts for children of
deployed military men and women,
helping families transitioning out

Cooper said a three-day expo will

seekers can sign up for one-on-one career
counseling and interview with more than
100 recruiters; a college fair, featuring
more than 40 institutions, college prep

nonprofit, youth development and school
staff; and six empowerment zones, where
attendees can get information on personal
finance and investment, technology,
housing and foreclosure prevention,
taking advantage of the “green economy”

The idea is to have a conference that
not only celebrates the League’s past,
but also offers solutions for the current
challenges facing communities and also a
blueprint for the organization’s – and the
nation’s – future, League officials said.

NUL Continuing a Century of
Service This year, the National
Talibah Urban League is celebrating
Chikwendu 100 years of existence. It's
also celebrating a century of
service.
Ruth Standish Baldwin and Dr. George Edmund Haynes
founded the Committee on Urban Conditions Among Negroes
on Sept. 29, 1910, in New York City. Later this group merged
with the Committee for the Improvement of Industrial
Conditions Among Negroes in New York and the National
League for the Protection of Colored Women to form the
National League on Urban Conditions Among Negroes. By
1920, the name had been shortened to National Urban League,
the name it uses now.
What characterized the organization was its commitment
to providing direct services. While many other organizations
of the time and throughout the civil rights movement were
focused on concepts, principles and broad social changes, the
National Urban League stepped up to meet direct needs in the
community.
“Every man is our brother, and every man’s burden is our own.
Where poverty exists, all are poorer. Where hate flourishes, all
are corrupted. Where injustice reins, all are unequal.”
Described as an "organization of social workers" by current
CEO and President Marc Morial, it continues to operate from a
perspective articulated by former Executive Director Whitney
M. Young Jr., who said, “Every man is our brother, and every

With all due respect, I must
admit to being angered as well.
For millions of American families who are seeking work,
the immediate challenge of economic survival is compelling.
This is why, on July 1, I was proud to join 240 other Democrats
(as well as 29 courageous Republicans who rejected pressure
by their Republican leadership) in approving an emergency
measure: The Restoration of Emergency Unemployment
Compensation Act (H.R. 5618).
We succeeded in that House of Representatives debate (270-
153) despite the 142 Republicans who voted in opposition.
Now, we need only to obtain Senate approval in order to
extend benefits until Nov. 30 and retroactively restore federal
compensation to Americans who were cut off as early as the
end of May.
As of this writing, however, the Senate’s support is being
blocked from an “up-or-down” vote by its Republicans. We are
witnessing the same tactics of obstruction they used to attack
our president and his Democratic congressional majority on
health care reform. This Republican filibuster is unacceptable

students experience learning loss when they do not engage in

Starting the school year with an academic deficit can put
students at a serious disadvantage.
When competing with summer sun, technology can be a
parent’s best friend in helping to keep children learning. Type
“summer learning resources” into a search engine and you’ll
find thousands of options to keep your kids learning and maybe

are searching for ways to
remain relevant, the National
Urban League has done so by
always branching out from
its core -- which is helping
people meet their immediate
needs and accomplish their
short and longer-term goals.
Whether it be finding the
extra money to keep the lights
on or feed the family until
pay day or understanding the process and saving to purchase
a home, the Urban League
through its many affiliates
across the country helps
individuals and families
address and meet those needs.
That service continues as
the backbone of the Urban
League's efforts.
Next week, the National Urban League will celebrate
its 100-year milestone at a convention in Washington, D.C.
There, the NUL will showcase this service through job fairs,
and must be overcome.
We have stopped our nation’s economic hemorrhaging. Yet,
nearly one out of every 10 American workers is still struggling
to find employment.
Despite losing their jobs through no fault of their own,
moreover – and despite being required to look for work every
day – nearly 2 million Americans now have been without jobs
for so long they have exhausted their state unemployment
funds. As of July 1, at least 12,000 of those increasingly
desperate Americans are our neighbors right here in Maryland.
Under these difficult economic conditions, most
Americans understand that prompt action to extend long-term

our slowly recovering economy, nearly three out of every four
Americans believe that now is too soon to end unemployment
compensation for their neighbors who are looking for work.
These overwhelming majorities reflect both our American
values and our common sense. Consider this observation
from Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize-Winning economist, in
the July 5 edition of the New York Times: “… Helping the

badly need it, helps support consumer spending. That’s why
the Congressional Budget Office rates aid to the unemployed
as a highly cost-effective form of economic stimulus. ... [A]id
to the unemployed creates jobs quickly – while allowing that
aid to lapse ... is a recipe for even weaker job growth, not in the
distant future, but over the next few months.”
If extending federal unemployment benefits is both good for
our economy and morally justified, why, then, are Republicans
fighting so hard to filibuster us from acting?
Only those who are totally detached from reality would
suggest (as some leading Republicans have asserted) that
any American family would
choose to receive $300-$400
per month in unemployment
benefits rather than go back to
work at a well-paying job.
Economists advise us,
moreover, that we are not
going to bring our federal
and state budgets back into
balance by starving working
families. The key to national economic recovery is precisely the
opposite.
Knowing all this, however, we are left only with the
suspicion that the Republican tactic of obstruction is grounded
in raw politics. We must conclude – unless shown otherwise
– that Republican leaders, for political reasons, want the
economic recovery that President Obama and congressional
Democrats are building to fail.
This debate about the direction of our country, then, comes
down to a question of priorities, a reality that America’s voters
should take to heart on Election Day this year.

The House That ‘Extreme Makeover’ Built

Makeover: Home Edition” in
partnership with Excel Homes

completed the largest home
ever built on the series for
eight deserving and grateful
young ladies from the Boys
Hope Girls Hope group home
for at-risk youth.
“This is wonderful, this is
a once in a lifetime deal” said
Dwayne Thomas, 16, who is a
resident in the organization’s
home for boys on the same
street as the new building.
His younger sister Destine,
12, is one of the eight young
girls who will reside in the
11,000-square-foot home
located on Fleetwood Avenue.

Documentary Chronicles Historic Gathering of Black Men

On Oct. 16, 1995, African-American males descended in
droves on the District of Columbia for a historic gathering
on the National Mall. Prophetically dubbed the Million Man
March ahead of time, the gathering lived up to its billing,
with anywhere between 1 and 2 million brothers attending –
depending upon the news source.
Over the course of the day-long event, organized by
Minister Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam, the audience
listened to such luminaries as the Rev. Al Sharpton, the Rev.
Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Ben Chavis, Congressman Charles
Rangel, Kwanzaa creator Ron Karenga, Stevie Wonder and Los
Angeles Sentinel publisher Danny Bakewell. They heard from
female leaders, too, including attorney Faye Williams, poet
Maya Angelou, civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks, Dr. Dorothy
Height and Dr. Betty Shabazz, the widow of the late Malcolm
X, to name a few.
While the speeches touched on a range of themes, they
unified to paint a touching picture of Black-on-Black love
in stark contradiction to the prevailing negative images then
disseminated by the mainstream media. All of the above has
been faithfully preserved by director Glenn Towery in Long
Live the Spirit of the Million Man March, a documentary
serving as a priceless keepsake of what was also referred to as a
“Day of Atonement.”
To his credit, Towery, with the help of Kenyan cameraman
Linus Leting, managed to capture not only what transpired up
on the stage, but the intimate reflections of many lesser-known
participants, who share from the heart just what the experience
meant to them. Given the escalation of the host of woes
affliction the Black community over the intervening years,
that makes this memento of more optimistic times all the more
priceless.

The Race to the Mic: Was Jordan Out of
Line in Criticism of Heat?

Critics just can’t get enough shots at the Miami Heat’s new
trio. So when Michael Jordan recently told reporters: “There’s
no way, with hindsight, I would’ve ever called up Larry [Bird],
called up Magic [Johnson] and said, ‘Hey, look, let’s get
together and play on one team,’” media members went into
overload. Jordan then added: “Things are different. I can’t say
that’s a bad thing. It’s an opportunity these kids have today. In
all honesty, I was trying to beat those guys.”
Was Jordan in or out of line? Were his statements a measure
to his competitiveness or just his thirsty desire to stay relevant?
Perry Green and Stephen D. Riley of the AFRO sports desk
took aim.
PG: It’s really easy for MJ to say that after the fact ... but I
don’t believe him. I think MJ is just using this as another means
of staying relevant in the public eye. Just like at his Hall of
Fame speech when he said at age 47 he could come back and
still be a problem for players in the league. Yea right MJ, I’m
not buying it!
SDR: You’re crazy. The media asked MJ his opinion. He
didn’t hold a one-hour televised press conference titled “MJ’s
decision on LeBron going to Miami.” This isn’t some media
ploy. They found Jordan out playing golf and asked him his
opinion and he said what everyone thought he would.
PG: In my opinion, this is just another prime example of
MJ’s competitiveness overlapping reality. I don’t even know
how valuable his comments are on this. He’s telling us what he
would have done nearly 20 years ago, and we’re supposed to
buy it? In reality, he was NEVER in the position LeBron was
in and MJ, Larry and Magic were never free agents at the same
time.
SDR: Jordan’s point is simple: you can’t call yourself the
best then go play second fiddle on another player’s team. That’s
just how it is. It’s going to be Wade’s team and LeBron will just

second best. Where’s the competitiveness?
PG: I don’t even see how that’s not considered competitive.
I don’t see why as fans, we expect players to waste their best
years being selfish, competing to be considered the greatest
individual player ever instead of competing to be a significant
member of the greatest team ever. Lebron, Wade and Bosh
are in the process of making history by putting selfish
accomplishments aside to form potentially one of the greatest
teams ever assembled.
Perhaps they figured if they combined their talents, they
could knock off other great assembled teams like L.A. or
Boston quicker than most experts expected. That’s competitive.
SDR: I respect Jordan for being the lone, self-psycho
competitor. That’s what made him great; the will to want to
beat everybody and not make best buddies and teammates
with the playground’s other most talented players. It’s called
competitiveness. The great ones have it.
PG: No, that’s self-absorption. Thinking about self only,
trying to promote self only.
SDR: Self-absorption? You mean like LeBron did with the
one-hour TV special? I still can’t decipher why a guy craves
the glory and fame of being a solo champion so much but only
possesses the mentality of a glorified role player. Really strange
to me.
PG: You can respect Jordan’s self-absorption and I’ll respect
Lebron’s willingness to put selfish accomplishments aside and
help bring together potentially one of the greatest teams ever
assembled. LeBron is a totally different player than Mike was but
that difference doesn’t equate to less greatness. Point is, contrary
to the timeless commercial, you don’t have to “Be like Mike” to
be considered in the running for G.O.A.T and I’m glad LeBron is
separating himself from Jordan’s
legacy.

Stokes Jr. is one of only 18
youths selected to represent
the U.S. in the COPABE Pan
Am ‘A’ 14U Championships
scheduled to begin this
weekend. With 14 year
olds picked from all over
the country – including six
players from California and
three players from Texas –
Stokes is the lone selectee
from Maryland. He’s also
one of only two African
Americans on the team, hand-
picked from more than 40
youths participating in the
tryout for the team.
“I believe this is the first
time ever that there will be at
least two Blacks playing for
Team USA’s 14U team,” Troy
Stokes Sr. told the AFRO. “It
was either one or none, but
never two. That’s definitely a
step in the right direction.”
The national team left for
Nicaragua on July 21 and will
begin action on July 25 in a
match against Panama. They
will face El Salvador on the
27th, Mexico on the 28th and
Honduras on the 29th. Each
game will be played at either
Jackie Robinson Stadium or
Dennis Martinez Stadium,
both located in Managua.

Cornered by The Associated Press at a celebrity basketball
game, Floyd Mayweather couldn’t escape. After letting a
Friday deadline pass with no response, his much-hyped
potential bout with Manny Pacquiao was on the ropes and
ready to collapse. The media wanted answers, the fans wanted
answers and every bookie, broker and bettor in Vegas wanted
answers. So what did Mayweather counter with when hit by
this whole super-bout question? A lackadaisical whimper
punch of: “I’m not really thinking about boxing right now. I’m
just relaxing. I fought about 60 days ago, so I’m just enjoying
myself, enjoying life, enjoying my family and enjoying my
vacation.”
Uh... really Floyd? Are you serious? These are the words
tip-toeing from the mouth of the self-proclaimed “best fighter
ever?” The guy just a year removed from a year’s worth of
retirement talking about relaxing and vacation? The HBO
quoted “prize-fighter” who always goes for the big payday?
Floyd fans can try their best to explain this away, but it
won’t be easy. How do you nickname yourself “Money”
Mayweather but treat the biggest payday of your career like
it’s a part-time job at Checkers?
He could’ve given a number of reasons, from saying he’s
waiting on the outcome of his trainer’s upcoming court case
to his Shih Tzu just died and he’s in mourning right now (no
report on whether or not Mayweather owns a Shih Tzu is
available at this time). Did he have to? No. Should he have,
for his fans’ sake at least? Most definitely.
When you run through the world proclaiming that you’re
the best ever in your profession and everyone should respect
your greatness, you owe it to not only yourself but enthusiasts
everywhere to stand by those principles. You think LeBron
James will command the same respect he used to? Heck, even
Lil Wayne, the self-proclaimed “best rapper alive,” doesn’t
generate the same publicity he used to. And it’s funny because
now that I think about it, he doesn’t even refer to himself as
the best anymore and how could he after a series of recent
head-scratchers?
See, when you keep telling people over and over again that
you’re the best, it’s absolutely mandatory you walk the walk
until you hang up your shoes. Mayweather, however, still has
his shoes laced up but he’s walking in the opposite direction of
the biggest race he can run in right now. The best should want
to beat the best or at least say they lost to the best.
You don’t get this kind of obstacle course in the NFL,
NBA, NHL or MLB. Typically, the best two teams (not the
most talented) end up meeting each other down the road
somewhere. Only in college football and boxing do you get
sideswiped with politics that steers the fans clear of what they
want.
First, Mayweather was on his campaign to “clean up the
sport of boxing” by refusing to fight Pacquiao until the latter
underwent strict drug testing procedures. Now, Mayweather
seemingly could care less about a fight? Crazy.

Just as news of President Barack Obama’s
new national HIV/AIDS strategy made news,
people from around the nation converged on
Baltimore to help residents determine their
HIV status. Like many urban areas, Baltimore
has been hit hard by the HIV/AIDS epidemic
and even more troubling are the numbers
of HIV-positive teens and adults who
unknowingly harbor the disease.
On July 19, Project SHALEM, a
partnership between the faith community and
medical providers, and participants of City
Uprising Baltimore – an annual community
service project spearheaded by Gallery
Church – combined their efforts to provide a
day of free HIV testing, counseling and care
consultation for city residents.

D-Md., Heather Hauck of the Maryland
Infectious Disease and Environmental
Health Administration, JACQUES Initiative
Executive Director Derek Spencer and Ellis
Prince, pastor of Gallery Church Baltimore,
were on hand to launch the innovative
ceremony.
“The AIDS/HIV epidemic that is
managed to remain relatively underreported,
despite the fact that it affects millions each
year,” said Cummings in a statement. “We
can work harder, and do much better in
combating this terrible disease, which has
particularly been a scourge on the streets
of Baltimore. Working with the faith-based
community is just one way we must become
more effective and efficient in our efforts to
let people know they have the disease. This
is the first step down the path toward ridding
this nation of HIV/AIDS, once and for all.”
According to a press release issued by the
Institute of Human Virology of the University
of Maryland School of Medicine, more
than 90 volunteers recruited by faith-based
organizations have been trained to perform
HIV testing in Baltimore communities.
The volunteers are not restricted to services
assisting those of their religious affiliation,
and many visit soup kitchens, transitional
houses and outdoor festivals to provide free
HIV testing.
Rev. Prince applauded the program for its
ability to unite people of various backgrounds
and religions.

and lump sum fee proposal from asbestos and lead inspection consulting
firms in performing:
1. Asbestos Investigation
2. Lead-based Paint Screen
3. Report Summarizing Findings of Asbestos and Lead Inspections
for the ENHANCED NUTRIENT REMOVAL UPGRADE (ENR) at the City
of Cambridge WWTP.
The project is funded in part by grants from the Maryland Department
of Environment under the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund. Qualified
minority business enterprises (MBE´s) and women´s business enter-
prises (WBE´s) are especially encouraged to participate.
The following structures will require both asbestos and lead-paint
investigation:
a. Waste Solids Building
b. Garage Facility
c. Headworks
The asbestos and lead investigation should be completed and the report
submitted to George, Miles & Buhr, LLC prior to October 15, 2010. Award
of the contract is expected by September 1, 2010.

requested by the Transportation Engineering and Construction Division,

provide design consultant services for federally funded projects.
The Scope of work shall include field survey and design for traffic signals,
detectors, closed circuit television traffic monitoring, variable message
signs, field condition inspection and associated work, as required by the
Department of Transportation.
Firms interested in providing these services must demonstrate and
document their recent experience and qualifications to perform the
following tasks:
1. Preparation of design plans for traffic signals, inductive loop, video
and wireless detectors for variable message signs, closed circuit televi-
sion surveillance plans, and communication design
2. Knowledge and experience with all type of communication methods
including, fiber, twisted pair copper and wireless communications for
signal systems design
3. Technology assessment for traffic control systems: signals and ITS
devices
4. Design of roadway signing, pavement markings, and intersection
lighting
5. Signal timing analysis, modeling, optimization and knowledge of
computerized signal systems
6. Signal/traffic engineering studies including warrant; accident investiga-
tions and analysis; travel time and delay; spot speed; parking needs;

7. Design and review of maintenance of traffic/work zone traffic control
plans
8. Preparation of technical reports, cost estimates and contract

Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) seeks a management associate responsible for
providing support to the coordinator of the Maryland Accessible Textbook Program at the Maryland State
Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (LBPH) which includes driving visually impaired staff to
attend meetings and other work functions. LBPH is designated as an Instructional Resource Center to
coordinate statewide availability of textbooks and supplementary materials in electronic format to eligible
blind or print disabled students enrolled in institutions of higher education and postsecondary education in
Maryland.
MSDE is a State agency that develops and administers education, library, and rehabilitation programs, and
is on the forefront of standards-based reform of public education. Annual salary range: $34,113 - $43,917.
