5 E Lesson 1
Title of Lesson: Learning to Pass
Subject Area/Strand or General Topic Area: Soccer/Physical Education
General Age or Grade Level: Entry Level Soccer Clinic (6-10)
Learning Objective(s): By the end of this lesson, learners will be able tocomplete short passes
using the inside of their foot and know the situation in which using the inside of the foot
to strike the ball is appropriate.
Engage: Start with a game of Knock the Cone, learners will attempt to pass a ball hitting the
cone and knocking it over (bodily-kinesthetic/spatial). Have them talk in groups about
what previous experiences they have had with soccer (linguistic/interpersonal)
Explore: State the learning objective. Have them sort themselves based on what they view their
skill level to be (intrapersonal) and begin passing the ball to each other
(interpersonal/bodily-kinesthetic/spatial)
Explain that depending on the situation we would use a different part of our foot to pass
that ball and have them discuss what reasons there might be to use or not use the inside of
the foot (interpersonal/logic)
Explain: To gain an understanding of proper times to use the inside of the foot we want to have
them use their creative and critical thinking skills. Start by having participants look at a
sheet of scenarios with images and a description of each scene, then have them circle
which would be an appropriate situation to use the inside of the foot
(spatial/logical/bodily-kinesthetic).
Having circled their answer have them discuss their decisions and the thinking behind it
in a small group, then with the group think of other situations in which it would be more
useful to use the inside of the foot to strike the ball (interpersonal/intrapersonal/bodily-
kinesthetic)
Elaborate: Now we are going to physically demonstrate some of the scenarios that they saw on
the sheet, as well as some of the situations they came up with on their own. This will give
more physical practice as well as taking the scenarios off the page to make them easier to
visualize.
In this section we will also be going over the pros and cons of using the inside of the foot.
Evaluate: Have them resort themselves along a spectrum, asking them to compare their abilities
when they first started to what they are now (intrapersonal). Reinforce learning by having
them regroup and talk about different situations they would pass with the inside of the
foot (spatial/interpersonal
Evoke: If you could score a goal in a game, what would you want it to look like? Present
opportunities for them to engage with soccer in the community, local leagues, clinics and
intramurals, making sure to present a variety of skill levels.
