The story of BAHUBALI & Xilinx FPGAs

Its the Bahubali movie mania everywhere in India with the grand release of the movie approaching soon. The
movie was shot using the Xilinx FPGA-based ARRI ALEXA XT digital cinecam, marking director Rajamouli's
first film using a digital camera.
The worlds largest supplier of motion picture equipment, ARRI Group, rolled out its 6.5k digital cinecam
ALEXA 65mm (54.12 x 25.58 mm). ALEXA bristles with Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGAs to give a remarkably short time
to market.

ARRIs experience in using the ALEXA

design to shorten the development time
is yet another example of using FPGA
technology to develop broad product lines
that grow significantly in capability over
time with greatly reduced development
effort thanks to carefully planned and well
executed FPGA and EDA tool roadmaps.

The upward compatibility between the

Virtex-5 and Kintex-7 FPGA families
allowed ARRI engineers to develop
ALEXAs high-end image-processing and
recording systems faster using the existing foundation of the tested and proven ALEXA subsystems. The 28nm
Kintex-7 FPGAs in the ALEXA camera provide sufficient additional processing performance to accommodate
the doubled pixel rate of the A3X CMOS image sensor relative to the smaller Super 35 sensor used in the
ALEXA XT camera.

ARRI engineers also used Xilinx Spartan-6 and

Artix-7 FPGAs for sensor control and signal
conditioning in the ALEXA cameras front end.
Achim Oehler, ARRI Cinetechniks Project Leader for
the ALEXA camera, says of the development
program, All Xilinx chips performed to our
highest levels of expectation, which cannot be
underestimated in a world where in many cases a
fast time to market is traded off against a lower
quality of product.
The ALEXA aims to deliver the best possible image quality to the top end of the market, without any
compromise. Successful technology partnerships have been crucial on this ambitious project; using Xilinxs
latest technology has been a key element in our drive towards delivering a complete system with an easy
image pipeline.

The filmmakers and cinematographers had the

opportunity to try out the new FPGA-based ARRI
ALEXA XT 6.5K digital cinecam although ARRIs
ALEXA employs Xilinx Kintex-7, Artix-7, and Spartan- 6
FPGAs for various internal functions including
image-processing, signal conditioning, and image-
sensor control.
This has also been great opportunity for university
professionals who work on advanced Real-time advanced image and video processing algorithms using Virtex,
Kintex, Artix and
Zynq family.
