Practicum Goal and Focus

My goal for this practicum experience is to explore the role of nursing educator in the online platform. Through my
efforts I hope to gain an understanding of the tasks and challenges of this role, and more specifically, how the role of
educator in this platform contrasts with my experience in the on-ground setting. Ultimately, I hope to gain insight
into whether the online platform is an environment in which I can be both successful and fulfilled in my role as
nursing educator.

I expect that through this experience I will:

Implement strategies for creation of a vibrant online learning community.

Appraise student assessment methods
Discover the principles behind development and maintenance of the online classroom.
Evaluate the obligations and opportunities of and for academic service.
Evaluate course and program evaluation and assessment processes.
Evaluate opportunities for faculty development.

D1: Summary of Outcomes, Activities, and Evidence (Weeks 1-4)

a. Practicum Outcomes: Outcome 1: Implement at least three strategies for communication with students in the online
What outcomes were met, how were environment, in order to help to create a vibrant teaching and learning community.
they met, and if not met, provide
explanation. This outcome was met by creating an introduction video in Adobe Spark for the classroom, responding
to students in the DQ forums, using Socratic questioning to advance the discussions, working with a
student in the one-to-one discussion regarding creating behavioral objectives for an assigned teaching
project. I also formulated a response to a student email regarding a late assignment. Dr. London
actually responded to the student, but agreed with the response I suggested. I can very much see how
using all of the aforementioned methods helps to create a vibrant classroom. I do feel that I am
somewhat limited by my small (and somewhat clandestine) role in the classroom. However, I most
definitely feel that these activities helped me to meet outcome 1.

Outcome 2: Appraise assessment methods, and conduct assessment of student learning for at
least three different assignment types.

This outcome has been met by grading student DQs, a scholarly paper, and through critique of a
students behavioral objectives written for an assigned teaching project. I felt that I not only met this
objective through my activities, but I came away with a far deeper understanding of the difficulty of
assessing student learning both fairly and efficiently.

Outcome 3: Discover at least one of each of the principles of: instructional design, curriculum
development, revision, and general maintenance in the online classroom platform.

Although I have completed some of the activities for this outcome, I feel that I have a bit more work
left in achieving this outcome. Now that I have viewed a number of Moodle tutorials, and engaged in
discussion with Dr. London about many of these topics, I plan to work with her in the classroom to gain
a better understanding of the Moodle platform, and also to understand how this influences instructional
design and curriculum development. In addition, it is my hope to gain a better understanding of the
revision and maintenance procedures for the platform. Thus, the achievement of this outcome is
ongoing.

Outcome 4: Evaluate possibilities for academic service, governance, and collaboration, and
participate in two academic service events.

This outcome has been met through my attending the FACT 2 Symposium, and by remotely attending a
SUNY Delhi Faculty Meeting. In addition, Dr. London and I have discussed her various service efforts,
responsibilities, and insights.

Outcome 5: Evaluate at least three course and program evaluation and assessment principles,
procedures, and/or tools utilized in the assessment process for NURS 402.

This outcome is still in progress, and has yet to be met. However, I expect meeting this outcome in my
continued discussions and work with Dr. London, and expect to meet this outcome without difficulty
before sessions end. Thus far, I have reviewed the faculty peer evaluation tool, and the student
evaluation tool.

Outcome 6: Appraise at least three opportunities and resources for advanced nursing practice
development, specifically in the role of faculty.

I have met this outcome in my discussions with Dr. London. I have already implemented some of Dr.
Londons time management strategies per our discussions as well.
I have also given very serious consideration to the role that service and research might pay in my
practice, and anticipate pursuing these ideas immediately upon graduation, if not before.

b. Activities completed: Activities for Outcome 1:

What activities did you actually
complete, and explain any change in Met with preceptor Dr. Julie London to discuss ideas for effective strategies. Dr. London and I
plans (from column C)? have had a number of Zoom meetings to discuss effective strategies for communicating with
students and building rapport.
Create About Us video greeting. I used Adobe Spark to create a video hello greeting for the
classroom. Originally, this was to be posted to the About Us forum, but Dr. London put it on
the home page, along with her greeting to the class.
I responded to student discussion posts and implemented Socratic questioning. The students
who responded did so in a reasonably reflective manner, and advanced the discussion.
I worked with one student in one-to-one discussion Question (DQ) to help create behavioral
teaching objectives for the assigned teaching project.
Although I did not personally respond to student emails (as I am a bit invisible in some areas),
Dr. London asked for my input regarding a student issue Respond to student emails and/or other
classroom communication methods as appropriate.
Activities for Outcome 2:

I used GradeMark to evaluate one student scholarly paper. Initially, I had planned to evaluate
three student papers. However, learning GradeMark proved to be a relatively steep learning
curve, as was grading a rather poorly done paper. Thus, Dr. London and I decided that one was
enough, and that I successfully met this portion of my desired outcome.
I evaluated three students weekly DQ questions work in both week 1 and week 2 DQs, using
assigned rubrics. Submit all work to Dr. London for evaluation of assessment and critiques of
student coursework.
Activities for Outcome 3:
I met with Dr. London before the course opened, and continue to do so, to discuss the
aforementioned principles of the online classroom, and how they apply specifically to the
NURS 402 Teaching and Learning course.
I found a Moodle training website that offered a free 10 day trial period
(https://www.lynda.com/Moodle-tutorials/Moodle-3-0-Essential-Training/433722-2.html),
which I signed up for to help me gain an understanding of Moodle. In addition, I have been
accessing the SUNY Delhi CCTL Moodle training resources (https://cctl.delhi.edu/) on SUNY
Delhis website.
Activities for Outcome 4:
I Attended and made a short presentation at the SUNY Faculty Advisory Council on Teaching
and Technology (FACT 2) Symposium. I attended this meeting with Drs. Digger and Deane. We
discussed the use of Shadow Health as a virtual learning alternative to the live clinical setting. I
related my experiences in using the software from a student perspective.
I attended a SUNY Delhi School of Nursing Faculty Meeting on April 18, 2007 using Zoom
meeting space.
During our meetings in Zoom, Dr. London and I discussed her service efforts, responsibilities,
and insights.
Activities for Outcome 5

During our meetings in Zoom, and through email, I have discussed assessment principles,
procedures, and tools utilized with Dr. London.
Dr. London supplied me with the faculty peer evaluation tool which I have reviewed to gain a
deeper understanding of expectations of expectations for SUNY Delhi on-line faculty.
Activities for Outcome 6
During our meetings in Zoom, Dr. London and I discussed personal development efforts she has
undertaken.
Discuss time management strategies with Dr. London, and implement strategies in my online
(and on-ground) teaching.
