Lesson Plan Title: Simple Machine

Discipline/Topic: Flipped Classroom Using Simple Machines

Target Population: 5th grade students (Upper Elementary)

Curriculum Links: Students will use prior knowledge from pervious lessons
and use several multimedia sources to learn about simple machines. They
will work individually and in groups to construct their own simple machines.

SL.5.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and


teacher-led).
SL. 5.4 Compare and contrast the information gained from experiments,
simulations, video, or multimedia sources with that gained from reading a
text on the same topic.

Objectives:

Students will be able to use their prior knowledge about simple machines while watching
the lecture video.
Students will be able to use their prior knowledge about infographics.
Students will be able to use their prior knowledge about QR codes
Students will be able to use their prior knowledge about Pinterest
Students will learn be able to communicate and listen to their classmates.
Students will be able to construct a clear and organized simple machine project.

ISTE Student Standards objectives

Standard 2: Digital Citizen -Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and


opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they
act and model in ways that are safe, legal and ethical. Students: a. cultivate and manage
their digital identity and reputation and are aware of the permanence of their actions in

technology, including social interactions online or when using networked devices. c.
demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights and obligations of using and
sharing intellectual property. d. manage their personal data to maintain digital privacy and

Standard 3: Knowledge Constructor- Students critically curate a variety of resources
using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make
meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others. Students: a. plan and employ
effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their intellectual
or creative pursuits. b. evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility and relevance of
information, media, data or other resources. c. curate information from digital resources
using a variety of tools and methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate
meaningful connections or conclusions. d. build knowledge by actively exploring real-
world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories and pursuing answers and
solutions.

Standard 4: Innovative Designer- Students use a variety of technologies within a design


process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions.
Students: a. know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing
theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems. b. select and use
digital tools to plan and manage a design process that considers design constraints and
calculated risks. c. develop, test and refine prototypes as part of a cyclical design
process. d. exhibit a tolerance for ambiguity, perseverance and the capacity to work with
open-ended problems.

Standard 6: Creative Communicator- Students communicate clearly and express


themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats
and digital media appropriate to their goals. Students: a. choose the appropriate platforms
and tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication. b. create
original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations. c.
communicate complex ideas clearly and effectively by creating or using a variety of
digital objects such as visualizations, models or simulations. d. publish or present content
that customizes the message and medium for their intended audiences.

MATERIALS-

Computer, student contract, lecture video worksheet, simple machine infographics worksheet,
QR Code worksheet, and simple machine directions/rubric,

TIMING-

In this two-day (60-90 minute) period.


(Day 1) Students will bring in the student contract signed. The night before students
should have watched the lecture video and students will print out the infographic notes to
study from. Students will scan the QR codes and bring work to the class. The teacher
will review the Pinterest website in class and students will analyze the pinned items on
the simple machine Pinterest. The teacher will hand out the Simple Machines Project
Rubric to the students and review it with them. Students will be placed in groups at
random and start to brainstorm and putting together their simple machine project. The
teacher will supply the materials.
(Day 2) Students will go home and analyze the Pinterest website and come in to class
with a Project that they want to complete. The teacher will answer any questions the
students may have. The teacher will have supplies for students to work on the project in
the classroom. Students will go home and make sure project is ready to present and go on
Quizlet for review if time allows.

SCOPE & SEQUENCE

Day one(60 minutes)

o The students will bring in the signed student contract.

o The night before students will watch the simple machine video on the computer and
answer the question about one fact from the lecture video.

o Students will print it out and bring it in to class. Students will also print out the
infographics that was on the website and write one fact about simple machines.

o Students will also download the QR codes to use on their phone or I-pad. Students will
scan the 4 codes and complete the assignments (10 minutes).

o The teacher will check these activities using the Evaluation of Students rubric.

o Students will bring in the hard copies of the second and third QR codes to class. In class,
we will review all of the students work that was above. The students answer while they
share with their peers (10 minutes).

o The teacher will then hand out the simple machine project requirements (10 minutes).
The students will explain that students will examine a Pinterest page that has example
simple machine projects. Students will randomly be placed in the groups to complete one
simple machine project.

o Students will be able to create their own accounts for Pinterest to find other projects.
Students will watch the teacher review the Pinterest page with them.

o Students can begin to review what simple they would like to create (30mintues).

o Students will go home and have a finally decision on what project they will complete.

Day two... (60 minutes)

o Students will come in ready to work on their projects with their groups.

o The teacher will answer any questions students may have and review the rubric
again (5 minutes).
o The teacher will supply the materials and students can start their work. If there is
time after their project then students can use the computer to go on Quizlet to
review their simple machine vocabulary. (55 minutes).

o The teacher will use the Simple Machine Project rubric to grade the groups.

Evaluation of the lesson:

This lesson will be judged by the successful rate of students who followed the
rubric and the ISTE Student Standards. To see if students understand how to
use and follow directions through the multimedia software, the lecture video,
Infographics, QR Codes, Pinterest, and Quizlet. Students need to use their
knowledge of simple machines to complete all of these tasks.
Simple Machine Project
In your groups, you will select 1 simple machine to compete by looking
at Pinterest. In your project, you have to answer your questions that
are on the Weebly website.
