Denton, Carolyn. "How Does Food Impact Health?" University of Minnesota, Regents of the U

of Minnesota, 10 May 2016, www.takingcharge.csh.umn.edu/explore-healing-

practices/food-medicine/how-does-food-impact-health. Accessed 25 Nov. 2016. In this

article, Denton emphasizes the importance of a healthy diet, and why food isnt the

enemy to peoples bodies if they are eating well. She provides an example of

Cardiovascular Disease and how researchers have found factors like stress, tension,

inflammation, insulin resistance, elevated homocysteine, heavy metal toxicity and

elevated cholesterol are all connected to nutrition and eating habits. In other words

having bad eating habits can lead to bad health. She also provides a story of Lynn who

struggled with many health issues, but after her nutritionist told her to change her diet,

and her following through she has gotten better and lost weight. This article is all about

how important food is to us and how it gives our bodies the materials it needs to function

right. This relates to my project, because my project will be involving food so this article

was helpful in reminding me that these meals I am going to make need to be nutritious. It

also brought awareness to how serious a good diet is, and those without it can suffer

immensely; therefore, it gives me more motive to make sure my project works out.

Nierenberg, Cari. "Pregnancy Diet & Nutrition: What to Eat, What Not to Eat." Live Science,

Purch, 17 Sept. 2014, www.livescience.com/45090-pregnancy-diet.html. Accessed 26

Nov. 2016. In this article, Nierenberg clarifies myths and facts about food when someone

is pregnant, and what pregnant women should eat while expecting. She makes clear and

uses evidence that expecting women need more calcium, iron, protein and folic acid

according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, because they help

the health of the women and her developing baby. All four of those nutrients help build

the baby and keep it healthy and alive. The article explains that during pregnancy, it is

important to eat nutritious foods most of, if not all, the time, They say to avoid certain

food and drinks like caffeine, alcohol and fish, and it also clarifies some common

misconceptions about pregnancy like morning sickness. I decided this source would be

useful, because a lot of shelters for women hold pregnant women. If I plan on feeding

women in shelters I should know what some of them cant eat, what they can, and why it

is good for them. It means I cant be serving coffee to pregnant women and I should stay

away from fish. This whole article is usable because of its list of yes and nos of food.

Smiechowski, Jenny. "Nutrition and Recovery: How Healthy Eating Can Help You Stay Sober."

The Fix, William Georgiades, 15 Apr. 2014, www.thefix.com/content/nutrition-and-

addiction-recovery-how-healthy-eating-can-help-you-stay-sober?page=all. Accessed 25

Nov. 2016. In this article, Smiechowski explains how having a nutritional diet can help

recovering addicts. She expands on this by explaining that nutrients gives the body

energy which can help repair damaged organs, tissues and better their immune system.

She also describes how nutrients can impact a persons mood. This article was all about

nutrients and recovery. Pointing addicts in a more nutritious diet route can help with

their mental and physical health. This source was valuable because many women in

shelters can struggle with addiction problems. Since I plan to work with women in

shelters, it is uplifting ad helpful to know that nutritious meals can help them and how it

can help them specifically, because certain foods can increase the production of some

neurotransmitters.

Whitehead, Donald. "Homeless People Deserve Food Too." National Homeless, National

Coalition for the Homeless, 29 Oct. 2014, nationalhomeless.org/campaigns/food-

sharing/. Accessed 20 Nov. 2016. In this article, Whitehead points out the negative

consequences of city regulations and limits on food-sharing, and why it is important for

the homeless to get meals. He used NCH records that proved at least seventy-one cities

have attempted to restrict the practice of food sharing. He then use Fort Lauderdale in

Florida a negative example of food restrictions, because within three days, the city started

issuing summons to people who already had meal distribution systems. This article is

emphasizing that it is important that the homeless are fed because approximately one out

of every six Americans go hungry on a daily basis. Malnourishment can lead to multiple

mental, physical, and emotional health consequences that can lead to money issues,

worse health problems and sometimes even death. This article shows how important it is

that meals get to the homeless. Even though I wont be working on the general homeless,

it shows how hard it is for many people to get correct programs so they become sick.

Food-sharing restrictions have made it harder for people to get proper meals and I hope

to get nourishing meals to women and children in shelters. I now know there are

restrictions in some places and I will have to work around those.

Wride, Nancy. "Food an Important Ingredient at Abuse Shelter." Los Angeles Times, Timothy

Ryan, 26 Dec. 2005, articles.latimes.com/2005/dec/26/local/me-holiday26. Accessed 23

Nov. 2016. In this article, Wride conveys that providing the correct needs for abused

women and children has shown to be extremely helpful to their health. She used the

Rainbow Services based in San Pedro as a prime example of how correct treatment helps.

The people living there who have eaten better meals have seen improvement in their

health. Thanks to a grant provided by Los Angeles Times readers, the service fed dozens

of victims, helped with future housing plans, jobs, and counseling. The article was all

about the Rainbow Services and how they have used the money wisely to help all these

victims of abuse. They have been continued to pay the cook who planned the nutritional

meals and provided proper housing. This article can help my project because it shows

how big of an impact nutritional meals can have on abused women and children. Since I

plan on helping women and children specifically this article was very insightful and

encouraging to know that it does positively impact their health. It was very useful

because I didn't even think food could help this much for abused people.
