Content Area: Physical Education

Grade Level: 6th - 8th
Time Allotted: 50 minutes
Class Size: 40-50
Lesson # 3

Essential Question: Why is heart rate an important aspect of physical activity? What
information can it provide?

Content Standard(s): 3.5 Participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity a

minimum of four days each week.
1.3 Combine manipulative, locomotor, and nonlocomotor skills into movement patterns.

Prerequisites: For this lessons students should know the process for checking out and in
the Gopher HR bands. Students should also be familiar with what each of the different
colors mean displayed on the band based on their level of activity. Students will also
need to know the process for circuit activities and be able to properly perform each of the
different exercises.

Specific Learning Objectives: In this lesson students will have an opportunity to use the
Gopher HR wristbands for the first time during a circuit activity. Students will learn how
to read the bands during live time and be able to determine what level their HR is at
based on the color displayed on the band. After this lesson students will be able to
synthesize their effort level during the activity by reflecting on what color they noticed
most throughout the activity. This will eventually lead to students setting personal goals.

Equipment Required:
Small cones x12
Cone sleeves x12
Large cones x4
5lb dumbbell weights x40
iPad x1
Gopher HR bands x50
Gopher HR transmitter x1
Electronic timer x1
Speaker x1 (optional)
Survey x50 (optional)
Pencils x50 (optional)

Assessment(s): In this lesson students will be visually assessed through informal

observation as well as through verbal checks for understanding. Teacher will be looking
for students to be using correct techniques to execute the different exercises involved in
the circuit activity.
Academic Language Demands: Vocabulary; resting heart rate, beats per minute,
maximum heart rate.
Students will need to read written instruction as well as listen to verbal cues and
instructions. Students will need to respond verbally.

Accommodations: This lesson will include a combination of visual and verbal

instruction to meet the learning needs of all students. Modeling by the teacher will be
used to address specific needs of EL students. Individual accommodations may be
needed such as allowing students to diagram rather than perform some aspects of the
lesson.

Planned Lesson Instruction: (Note: the first 5 and last 5 minutes of class will be
designated to allow students to dress)

Introduction: (5 minutes)
Class will begin with a short 5 minute warm up.
This warm up should include:
-High knee run in place (15s)
-Butt kickers in place (15s)
-Side to side hops (15s)
-Front to back hops (15s)
-Right leg quad stretch: standing (15s)
-Left leg quad stretch: standing (15s)
-Standing hamstring stretch (30s)
-Two minute warm up run

Body of the lesson: (30 minutes)

After class warm ups have students sit in groups in a central location in the gym to begin
the check out procedure for the wristbands. Follow the same exact distribution routine as
in lesson #2. Please reference #2 for the detailed instructions of this process. Once all
students have received a HR band and properly secured the wristband have them power
on the device and then review the different HR zones based on the color displayed on the
band. See lesson #2 for color details. Power on your iPad and open up the application
for the wristbands. Next power on the transmitter and you should see all the students
displayed on your iPad (see attached docs). After you have reviewed all HR material and
checked that the equipment is working review the exercise in the circuit activity. (10
minutes)

Exercises are as followed:

-rest
-jog (1.5 laps around the gym)
-fitness style sit ups,
-forearm plank
-firecrackers
-push ups
-one leg seated hamstring stretch (switch every 15 seconds)
-jumping jack plank
-up downs
-alternating lunges
-squats
-5lb curls
(See attached materials for the layout of activities in the gym and how to set up)
Next have students break off into the 12 different stations. No more than 10 students per
station. Set the timer to thirty seconds per station with ten second transitions between
stations. Students will rotate through all 12 stations and participate in the circuit for a
total of 15 minutes. Use an audio cue such as a whistle to start the activity and to
transition. (One whistles to begin exercise, two whistles to stop and rotate). You can use
a portable speaker to play music during this circuit time as well. (20 minutes)

Closure: (5 minutes)
Have students return the Gopher HR bands and return back to roll call.
Have students complete four question survey about using the HR bands and level of
effort. The purpose of this survey is to measure student motivation and engagement. See
attached for survey (optional).

Extending the Lesson/Homework: N/A

Reflection/Next Steps:

Teacher notes: If you notice students on the iPad that are consistently in the blue to green
HR range encourage those students to try and challenge themselves physically. A great
way to do this is that is fun for the students is to make it a mini competition. See who
can remain in the yellow to pink range the longest during the circuit activity. Make it a
competition between neighbors where students can see others bands around them. Have
the winners led the next day warm-ups.
