Technology in PE

Content Area: Physical Education

Grade Level: 6th - 8th
Time Allotted: 50 minutes
Class Size: 40-50
Lesson # 9

Essential Question: How can technology influence physical activity?

Content Standard(s): 4.2 Identify physical activities that are effective in improving each
of the health-related physical fitness components.
4.3 Match personal preferences in physical activities with each of the five components of
health-related physical fitness.

Prerequisites: Students should have an advanced understanding of the Sworkit

application and be able to execute modeled exercises in the application. Students should
have an understanding of the five components of fitness and be able to identify exercises
that fall into each component.

Specific Learning Objectives: In this lesson students will present their created circuit in
front of their classmates and teach their peers the proper technique in executing the
different exercises they have selected. Students will discuss the fitness component they
are focusing on as well as other components they include within their circuit. Students
will learn how to present material in a group as well as how to correctly perform
exercises they may not be familiar with.

Equipment Required:
Teacher iPad x1
Student iPads x10
Projector x1
Rubric x10

Assessment(s): In this lesson students will be formally assessed on their creation of a

circuit using the Sworkit application. The teacher should follow the guidelines of the
rubric and project description. Students will be assessed in their groups. Each group will
give a two-three minute presentation of their circuit modeling each exercise and
describing why it was chosen and what component of fitness the exercise addresses. This
is the summative assessment for the unit.

Academic Language Demands: Vocabulary: Five components of fitness, exercise

specific vocabulary in each circuit. This will vary from group to group.
In this lesson students will need to listen receptively to instruction from the teacher as
well as presentation groups. Students will also productively speak when presenting their
circuit to the rest of the class.
Accommodations: This lesson will include a combination of visual and verbal
instruction to meet the learning needs of all students. Modeling by the teacher will be
used to address specific needs of EL students. Individual accommodations may be
needed such as allowing students to diagram rather than perform some aspects of the
lesson.

Planned Lesson Instruction: (Note: the first 5 and last 5 minutes of class will be
designated to allow students to dress)

Introduction: (5 minutes)
Have students submit their entrance ticket as they enter the gym.
Have students lightly jog a warm-up lap around the gym and have them sit in their groups
in a central location of the gym. The remainder of the class period will be dedicated to
group presentations.

Body of the lesson: (30 minutes)

Call up one group at a time to present their Sworkit created circuit. Students can use the
application and projector to display the exercise while they also perform the correct
techniques for their classmates. Each group will have up to three minutes to present their
circuit activity and discuss why they included the exercises they selected as well as the
components of fitness that match. Use the attached rubric to grade each group.

Note: Because of time constraints it is important that each group go no longer than 3
minutes. If you have less then 10 groups you may allow a minute of leeway time.

The closure period may be needed as presentation time.

Closure: (5 minutes)
End class with a group discussion about the presentations. What trends if any did they
notice? Let students know that the final lesson will be a Sworkit circuit developed from
the presentations that day. Also inform them that the Gopher HR bands will be used.

Extending the Lesson/Homework: Have students reflect back to their SMART goal
before the final lesson. Encourage them to think about what they need to do in the
coming lesson to make progress towards or achieve their goal.
