Standard 2 Culture as it Affects Student Learning

Artifact 1 Analysis

Through my study of second language acquisition and classroom experiences I have

learned that the initial, and most impactful, classroom practice is building a learning environment

and curriculum that acknowledges and honors the cultural identities that students bring to my

classroom.

The attached artifact demonstrates my understanding that all cultures should be honored

and recognized in my classroom. Furthermore, my understanding of Critical-Queer Pedagogy

suggests that I am actively creating learning opportunities that urge my students to not only

advocate for all minorities, but also create summative assessments that allow them to create

change in the school and community. By always asking, Whose voice is not being heard?

when we engage with a text, my students will develop both critical thinking skills and empathy

for other minorities.

Attending public school as an LGBTQ+ youth, showed me how oppressive a school

environment can become without any representation of your identity. This is why in my own

classroom, I strive to develop and explore the identities of all students, including ELLs,

LGBTQ+ students, and students of religions minorities.
