ESL student comprehend materials in ways that they may not be able to express in
words yet. Therefore, creating learning opportunities that allow them to utilize images and
cases, technology can be an effective tool in allowing students to show what they know.
The attached artifact is an example of a Do-Now that I use to refresh students on the
previous days material. In this case, we were doing a unit on the Civil Rights Movement. To
review the concept of civil rights, I shared a Google Doc with students and asked them to find
images that represented what they had learned the day before. Students uploaded images to
the doc, which I projected. As images populated the collage, we discussed how they related to
the material and how that related to the current days learning objective.
Before my ESL coursework, I would have thought an activity like this to not be educative
because students were not reading or writing. However, I now understand that students can
also learn a great deal by discussing what they are learning and examining their own
metacognition through the use of images and symbols that express more complex ideas.
