Question 7
In your opinion, do the characters in the story seem to care about their slaves in
a humane way or just as business? Why or why not?
You must support your answer with evidence.
In my opinion, the characters treat their slaves in a inhumane way, as if they were a business.
For example, the text states, " 'Come, how will you trade about the gal?-what shall I say for
her?-what'll you take?' " The slaveholders/sellers are treating them like objects to be bought
rather than living, breathing human beings.
Question 8
In your opinion, how do you think a Northerner would react to reading this story
for the first time?
How would a Southerner react to reading this story for the first time?
Support your arguments with evidence.
Back then, I think a Northerner would be prompted to take action. This story shows the cruelty
of slavery the Northerners fight against. I think they would be enraged, but would want to read
it because they wanted to have kindling for a fire. The text on page 488 states, "Stowe's book
was a bestseller in the North." However, the South was also angry that Stowe was bringing
slavery to the eye of the public with her book. They were angry that Northerners were learning
of the ways they treat slaves, but claimed it was "propaganda" like it says on page 488, "They
claimed the novel did not give a fair or accurate picture of the lives of enslaved African
Americans." They were angry that the Northerners were learning of their ways of cruelty.
