Subject: Spring Grade: Kindergarten

Teacher: Ms. Chavez School: Twin Lakes Elementary School

Lesson Element
1. Common Core Learning Standard(s) Addressed: SL.K.1. Participate in
collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and
texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups
Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others and
taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under discussion).
Continue a conversation through multiple exchanges.
2. Learning Target(s): Students will learn what Basant is, and how to people
from Pakistan celebrate with kites. As a result, of learning about Basant
students can explain why people from Pakistan celebrate with kites in Spring.
3. Relevance/Rationale: These outcomes are vital in the real world to appreciate
everyones culture and know the differences of celebrations between cultures.
The outcomes are essential for future learning to know about places in the
world, like in future geography classes.
4. Formative Assessment Criteria for Success: I will know students have
successfully met the outcomes by being able to tell why Pakistan celebrates
Basant. The assessment will be successful if each student creates their own
kite, writes about the celebration and their kite, and shares their kite to others.
5. Activities/Tasks: Teacher will have the PowerPoint ready for the students.
First the teacher will play the video explaining what spring is. After the video
the teacher will go through the PowerPoint further explaining spring and
celebrations, leading into the celebrations that occur in spring. Then the
teacher will talk about a place called Pakistan which celebrates spring by
celebrating Basant. Next the teacher will hand each student a printed kite
which the students are to decorate. Students will decorate the kite then write
about spring, how people celebrate and Basant. Finally, students will engage
with another student and talk about their kite and how they would celebrate
Basant.
6. Resources/Materials: Computer, PowerPoint, Paper of kite template, crayons,
markers, colored pencils, writing paper, pencils.
7. Access for All: By bringing in items to see and experience, students of
different diversity will have a better understanding. If I show pictures on a
video, book, PowerPoint, or they get to physically see or do what I am teaching
they will have a clearer idea of what is being presented.
8. Modifications/Accommodations: For any student that cannot physically
decorate the kite, a template of a kite will be online for them to decorate, as
well as word for them to type the response.
