The Unwanted

Abortion has always been a heavily debated and emotional topic. Abortion seems like a

fantastic and relatively cheap and easy method of preventing children. People use abortion for

the sake of convenience and to escape the fear of responsibility. Abortion is a highly

controversial topic because people argue whether or not the fetus is a baby, whether or not it

feels pain, and if the procedures conform to religious views. Abortion has been around for a very

long time and has gotten more advanced along the way. There are pros and cons to abortion, even

if I personally believe that the cons far outweigh the pros. I believe that Abortion in all forms is a

sin. God has put everyone on this earth for a reason and we cannot just have the right to do

whatever we want with something as big as human life.

The procedure of abortion is most commonly used to get rid of unwanted children.

People these days are having a ton a unprotected sex and do not want to take responsibility for

their actions. Each and every unwanted child is likely to be in some way a social liability. It is

only the wanted child who is likely to be a social asset. (Sanger, 1920) In our modern society,

women can pick and choose what they want in a child and if that expectation is not met then they

can just start over. People justify abortion by saying that the procedure is a lot cheaper than

raising a child, or that they are not ready for children, or simply because they do not want any.

One of the most common reasons for abortion, however, is genetic abnormality. Sadly, 67

percent of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome in the US are aborted. (Lifeissues.org) People

think about what they want for a child and act to their will in determining whether to keep it.

God values all life equally and if you decide to abort, you essentially cut God out of the equation.

Abortion seems to be the easy way out. If you do not want a kid, just kill it and then you do not

have to worry about it.

Abortion promotes a culture in which human life is disposable. (ProCon.org) If we

decide to abort children, then how do we determine what life is valuable? If we abort children

then we are essentially saying that some life is more valuable than others. I feel the greatest

destroyer of peace today is 'Abortion', because it is a war against the child... A direct killing of

the innocent child, 'Murder' by the mother herself... And if we can accept that a mother can kill

even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a

woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love... And we remind

ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts... (Mother Teresa) What she is

saying is, if we are allowed to abort children, then why are we not allowed to kill other people?

Some pros to abortion, especially in legal clinics, would include: not having to live off of

welfare, not having to spend a majority of your time on a child, and completely avoiding all risks

of labor. (ProCon.org) Women do not have to spend all of their time taking care of a child. You

could continue to pursue whatever career you want, or travel to exotic places, or just generally

live your life unimpeded by children. One of the biggest controversies about abortion is whether

or not outside powers should be involved in the process. If there were outside powers, then how

much power do you have as a person? How much power do you have as a woman? How much

power do you have over your own body? If there are government laws against abortion, what

does it mean to be in control of your own body? In this modern world people like to exercise

their rights as much as they can. Men and women should know what their rights are in terms of

abortion. Our government favors the womens side of abortion. How many times have you heard

of a man complaining that their child was going to be killed? Both of the parents should have a

say in the procedure. Abortion may be the womans right, but it is still the mans child. If a man

were to say that he wanted to keep the baby, women would take it as an attack on their rights.

Sadly, infidelity and unfaithfulness is strong in our culture. If people are going to be conceiving

children, the very least you could do is be willing to take care of the child.

Abortions can cause psychological damage (ProCon.org). There is a song called

Brick by Ben Folds Five that is about a man and a woman dealing with abortion. The man gets

his girlfriend flowers when he goes to visit her, but he can still feel them growing apart.

Psychological damage is one of the most common side-effects of abortion. This is usually caused

by rushing an abortion. Women get scared when they hear that they are pregnant and decide to

get an abortion as fast as they can. Abortion would not be as big of an issue if women would

make up their minds about having the procedure. Women rush in undecided on things like, if the

baby feels pain, if having an abortion was the right thing to do, or what people with think of

them after the procedure is finished. Women need to make up their minds before they decide to

have the abortion. Otherwise women feel guilty for doing it. Regardless of ones spiritual

understanding, his religion, or his faith, when he abandons the sanctity of human life in the

unborn state, he seeks to live in harmony with a materialistic society that has permitted itself to

be brainwashed to the point where words no longer have their original meaning. He has

permitted expediency to replace natural law if he can tolerate the madness of abortion to avoid

the inconvenience of pregnancy. (Everett Koop, 1976)

Women can be especially scared of having abortion when they hear how it is done. The

different types of abortion are determined by how far in on the pregnancy you are. The most

common procedures of abortion are: using a special kind of pill that makes you pass the baby,

a suction tube fed through the vaginal canal to suck up the baby, or having a surgery where the

doctors will remove the baby directly from the incision. The pill method is currently only legal in

the US if it is used within the first trimester, the first three months of pregnancy. Having an

abortion procedure performed is illegal in the third trimester due to the fact that the baby can

theoretically survive outside of the womb at that point. Women are rightfully scared of these

procedures which can lead to them carrying the baby to term and, as a result, lose a lot of money

taking care of an unwanted child. Children grow up in these environments of being unloved and

that can lead to them being neglected in terms of food and attention. If mothers do not love their

children then they usually fail to take care of them properly which makes them resort to relying

on welfare.

A big issue that can make a woman feel like they are stuck between a rock and a hard

place is babies conceived through rape. Obviously women feel like they are stuck with a child

and that there was nothing that they could do to prevent it. Abortion can feel like the only path

that they can take. One of the best things you can do in that situation is to put the baby up for

adoption. Adoption is not used exclusively for rape, but it is still a good option to consider. There

are many people that cannot conceive a child due to biological issues. Obviously the best thing to

do would be to give the baby to someone who would like children.

Abortion can be a bit more justified if the fetuses did not go to waste. After the

procedure, doctors pack the fetus into a biohazard container and are disposed of in the same way

that you would get rid of a person. Many of them are are thrown away or cremated. The funny

thing is that if the fetus is cremated, the mother is essentially recognizing it as a person. That just

takes the argument back to mothers being indecisive on the abortion procedure before they have

it. One way that would not be as wasteful would be to use the fetuses in scientific research. Many

institutes are willing to take biological donations of all kinds. Fetuses could be used in a whole

bunch of researches that would be much more useful than wasting them.

In conclusion, and after my research, I still believe that abortion in all forms is a sin.

Women try to justify abortion for many reasons. Some women do it out of spite, some women do

it out of fear of responsibility, and some do it just because they can. Abortion is a serious issue in

the US that most uninformed people would be completely ok with. A lot of people do not realise

how serious abortion is. Abortion is a horrifying and disgusting procedure that makes me admire

doctors stomachs. Overall, abortion is, at the very least, a good way to get deal with unwanted

pregnancies. There are a lot of opinions on it with no perfectly clear answers which results in a

whole lot of opinionated and loud people on both sides of the argument. If women educated

themselves before deciding on the abortion, then they would be much more careful in deciding

what to do with the baby. I personally believe that God loves all people and all life and we

cannot just decide whether or not we want a baby. God has provided with us children and we

should do our best to respect that.
