RELIGION IN MUSIC
Thomson Gale, (Encyclopedia of Religion) 2005
Music back then made a really big impact on religious people, due to the fact that they would use
the music as if it was the sound of gods voice. They worship what the lyrics say and it somehow
makes them feel loved and cared for. It spread around really quick during the years and that was
rare past then for something like that to happen, entertainment wasnt that much appreciated and
the sound of music and melodies werent much recognized. Over the years these certain types of
text have been sung, not written because people felt that connection with the music itself,
believing that others would listen even more if it was in a song, the rhythm and the melody
would attract even more individuals to listen to what they have to say. And that for them was a
great success, as to how they would connect to their spiritual world and could feel this type of
connection throughout the music.

Moody, Ivan. (Contemporary Music and Religion.) Reading, U.K., 1995.

For those who believe they need to worship that great desire for their great creator. They love to
be heard and they yell and demand their need to the holy church. The tradition of language and
gesture through their prayers is what makes them feel that certain type of emotion throughout
their living. And considering all the cultural diffusion going on in those past days, the different
emotions on society and the beliefs were just conflicts that now resolve with recovery words in a
song. People would listen to this and believe that there is hope and that what they believe
religiously is much more important and deserves respect as well as to be heard. Contemporary
church music was made to inspire those who needed to be heard, the music used would be sung
professionally and would be taken really seriously throughout the years as they would see what
great of an outcome it would represent to their people.

Leonard, Neil. (Jazz: Myth and Religion.) New York, 1987

In this case, more trodden like a stronger investigation the relationship between jazz and religion
came upon on the New Orleans jazz with the black church. They looked at music more as a
spiritual force. Altogether it became a really ambitious and comprehensive topic based on
religion, the more people wanted to know what it became and how it grew out to certain ways
that jazz was like a religion. Drawing in some frameworks on religion they investigated that
some jazz movements was a sacred activity, they also questioned themselves on how this type of
activity started altering others personal and social lives. Performers and musicians, for example,
tell their perspective on the concept and they connect both jazz and religion as if it was one thing
only. Taking the basics of jazz to what it outcomes from religion and history, comparing it to
other forms of art as well, taking in part that everything comes to this type of music that is on the
spiritual level and finds faith in others.

Marini, Stephen A. (Sacred Song in America: Religion, Music, and Public Culture.)
Urbana, 2003.
Investigating the different methods of songs and how they play a role in religious culture. Their
backgrounds also took a big part in this past investigation, explaining that some types of songs
take in a big part of the American culture. These songs dont only play a significant role in
rituals, but its presented in a way thats not committed to their past and beliefs. Sometimes the
songs give out different types of outcomes or senses different emotions depending on the type of
religion, but Marini had a different outcome when it came to the sacred song and that was that it
had its own central place in America. Wanting more people to know more about music traditions
this book made quite an impact back in these days, especially in historical studies and its
expected to make further connections in the future.

Wuthnow, Robert. (All in Sync: How Music and Art Are Revitalizing American Religion.)
Berkeley, 2003.
American religion has suffered a lot during the years because of such influences for education
and racial socialism. They would tell them what to believe and what they thought was right like
they didnt have an opinion about what to believe in. Later on, it became harder for society to
communicate with their loved ones, or even go to church on a daily basis. People started having
a different idea about religion and their beliefs, participation was believed to be a need in this
situation since the look for answers reduced. American religion then became more impressed by
its persistence, a project supported by the Luce Foundation then overcame the situation, speaking
the relationship between religion and the arts. To collect more information about the two types of
communities. More programs were then made to explain more about religion and arts, as well as
insights, and separating barrios.

Foley, Edward (Ed.) (Music and Spirituality) Religions, July 1, 2015

For many years people all around the world have known the power of music and what it has
created throughout harsh situations spiritually. One of the many reasons that music has a big
impact in religious culture is the pure sound of nature. The different kind of senses bring those
different types of emotions and experiences that show a brighter outcome than looking at
something and trying to understand. The sound waves in music are perceived by us humans in
the present, and that impacts us on a much higher level. It makes us think of whats there and
what is going on in that exact instant. In other words, it also gives us images on what the music is
trying to say. Theologian, Karl Rahner came up with the research that us humans are developed
as hearers because of our listening aid, is one of the first senses we develop, and the last one to
fade. The composition of music combined with the type of emotion reflected in the song also
creates a greater outcome to the people listening to the song.
St. Vincent (Spiritual significance of music) December 1, 2009
When a song is created, we think otherwise than it really is. Sometimes we dont think its
possible to make others understand what we are trying to make them think. And the reason
behind that is because that stands in a very different part of us. It gives the power to heal and
balance those feelings, to inspire and go through harsh situations. The situation between life and
music has always been an inspirational ride throughout the years and hearing the different point
of views from all these artists show how it affects them in such an incredible way. Music is at
the core of our being, and spirituality is a central part of our very essence this feeling gives
people reasons to write songs and show how they really feel about a situation, how it evokes
around their life and changes the environment theyre in. Its an escape from reality and they
understand the significance and the power of such meaningful words.
