Q2. (a) Describe briefly the impact of low power factor on active power [3 Marks]

(b) Figure Q2(b) shows an RLC circuit which supplied by an AC voltage source with
the operating frequency of 50 Hz. Based on the circuit,

i. Calculate the total impedance. [2 Marks]


ii. Determine the value of the current I,. (Hint: Use current division method)
[3 Marks]
iii.What is the power dissipated by the 50 n resistor? [2 Mark]
iv. Calculate the complex power as seen by the AC voltage source. [3 Marks]
v. Draw the power triangle based on the answer obtained in Q2(b)iv. [2 Mark]

(c) In Figure Q2(c), a passive component can be connected in parallel with Load X in
order to improve the power factor.
(i) What is the suitable component and briefly explain how the component
can help to improve the power factor? [2 Marks]
(ii) Determine the power factor of Load X. [3 Marks]
(iii)Calculate the value of the passive component in order to achieve unity
power factor. [5 Marks]

Q3. (a) Give at least 3 advantages of3 phase system [3 Marks]

(b) State the relationship the voltage and current in

i. delta connection [2 Marks]

ii. star connection [2 Marks]

(c) State the power equation for balanced three-phase load (Active, Reactive and

Apparent power) [3 Marks]

(d) Find all the current, line voltage and phase voltage for the circuit as shown in
Figure Q3(d). Sketch the phasor diagram for the all voltages and currents using
positive phase sequence and find active power for phase R. [15 Marks]

Q4. (a) State two types of core loss occurred in a magnetic circuit [4 Marks]

(b) The magnetic circuit of Figure Q4(b) is made of cast steel with 10 cm cross
sectional area at the center arm and 6 cm2 at both right and left arms.
Draw the equivalent electric circuit analogy for the magnetic circuit and

calculate the reluctance in the air gap. (hint: Jio = 4 JlXI 0-7 kg m S2 A-2 )

(c) An iron ring of cross sectional area 20x I0-4 m2 and mean diameter of 0.3 m has an
air gap of 15 mm wide. A coil of 150 turns is wound on the ring and a flux
density of 1.2 Tesla is required in the air gap. Use the magnetization curve in
Figure Q4(c) to solve the following problems .
(i) Sketch the arrangement of the ring, coil and air gap and calculate the flux
produced in the core [5 Marks]
(ii) Determine the ampere turns to magnetize the air gap (Fag) [3 Marks]
(iii) Find the ampere-turns to magnetize the iron (Fe)by neglecting the air gap
length [4 Marks]
(iv) Find the current required in the coil to magnetize the ring [4 Marks]

Q5. (a) Explain briefly the concept of transformer [5 Marks]

(b) Describe the step-up and step-down transformer in terms of relationship between
the number of turns and voltage in primary and secondary winding of a transformer
N l & N 2 and E l & E 2 respectively. [5 Marks]
(c) A single phase transformer 50 kVA, 11000/400 V, 50 Hz equivalent circuit has the
parameters as shown in Figure Q5(c). Taking the secondary voltage as reference,
calculate:

i. Secondary voltage, E2 [4 Marks]


ii. Primary voltage, E, [2 Marks]
iii. Secondary current referred to primary, h' [2 Marks]
iv. Exciting current, 10 [2 Marks]
v. Terminal voltage, V I [3 Marks]
