Malaysian institutions are gaining in popularity in Brunei. At the same

MarketInsights

The two main funding bodies in Brunei - the Ministry of Education for school leavers and the
Public Service Commission for in-service personnel - fully finance overseas studies for
training to meet the manpower requirements of Brunei. Although the eligibility criteria have
recently been tightenedto encourage attendance at local institutions, there continues to be
a demand for programmes not available locally. Malaysian private universities are eligible to
receive students on the Brunei Education Loan Scheme.

Bruneian students are unable to enter certain courses in other countries because of
restrictions on international students imposed by local funding mechanisms. Such courses
include allied health programmes, social sciences etc.

A number of students are attracted to Malaysia because of the relatively lower cost of
studying and living, its proximity to Brunei and cultural similarities.

The weaker Malaysian Ringgit has caused a renewed interest in studying in Malaysia.

The newly introduced Education Loan Scheme, offered by the Ministry of Education,
has given students more freedom with course options and encouraged them to
consider careers not necessarily tied to government jobs.

Brunei has a young population. The last three years
have seen the largest intake of students into A level
programmes, which in turn as led to an increase in the
number of schools offering A levels. This will have a
concomitant effect on the number of students seeking
higher education.
